During the course of a febrile disease, when pathogenic viruses and heat qi are rampant, patients experience mental restlessness and irritability in the chest and heart. If cold-natured medicines are taken excessively, or if purgative methods are overused, or if too much water is consumed, fluid retention may occur below the heart (epigastrium), damaging the stomach qi. After the disease turns and the heat trend subsides, the Spleen and Stomach become deficient, unable to transform and transport the five grains, resulting in anorexia (loss of appetite).
