Whenever an arrowhead or metal sharp object penetrates the flesh, treatment should aim to remove it promptly. Even if fragmented, it must be completely removed within a day. Subsequently, apply various medicaments; otherwise, the wound will inevitably fail to heal.
Formulas
Xuduan Gao (Caudex Dipsaci Ointment), also known as Danggui Xuduan Gao (Angelica Root and Caudex Dipsaci Decoction), from *Shengji Zonglu*.
Indications: Arrowheads penetrating the flesh causing redness and swelling; expelling wind and promoting ulcer healing.
Ingredients: Angelica Root (*Danggui*), Caudex Dipsaci (*Xuduan*), Rhizoma Drynariae (*Gusuibu*), Cinnamon Twig (*Guizhi*, bark scraped off), Prepared Aconite Root (*Fuzi*), Herba Lycopi (*Zelan*), Peony Root (*Shaoyao*), Rhizoma Bletillae (*Baiji*), Achyranthes Root (*Niuxi*), Notopterygium Rhizome (*Qianghuo*), Szechwan Lovage Rhizome (*Chuanxiong*), Aucklandia Root (*Muxiang*), Aconitum Carmichaelii Deaux (*Wutou*, large ones).
Preparation: Use four jin of oil and one jin of lard. Boil for one day. Filter through raw silk to remove dregs. When the medicinal oil turns purple, immediately remove from heat. Test by dripping a small amount into a bowl of water; it is ready when it forms beads. Store in porcelain or earthenware vessels, sealed tightly. Apply according to standard methods.
Disan San (Di Sheng Powder), from *Shengji Zonglu*.
Indications: Extracting arrowheads.
Ingredients: Prepared Aconite Root (*Fuzi*, two pieces weighing half liang, cracked by processing, skin and umbilical scar removed), Areca Seed (*Binglang*, two pieces, one raw, one cooked), Rhubarb (*Dahuang*, chopped), Aucklandia Root (*Muxiang*, each one fen), Croton Seed (*Badou*, heart and membrane removed, oil expressed, fried until yellow), Angelica Root (*Danggui*, chopped and dried), Myrrh (*Moyao*, one liang, finely ground), Szechwan Lovage Rhizome (*Chuanxiong*), Tangerine Peel (*Chenpi*, each one fen).
Usage: Grind all ingredients into a fine powder. Take one "zi bi" (a measure roughly equivalent to a grain of rice or smaller) mixed with wine. Administer only once.
Hushe Wan (Tiger Tongue Pill), from *Shengji Zonglu*.
Indications: Applying medicine to the arrowhead site to facilitate spontaneous expulsion.
Ingredients: Dried Tiger Tongue Herb (*Hushe*, half liang, pounded and ground in a stone mortar), Raw Aconitum Carmichaelii Tip (*Caowutou Jian*, three qian, ground), Euodia Fruit (*Chushi*, three qian, ground), Magnetite (*Cishi*, half liang, pounded and ground in a stone mortar), Phellodendron Bark (*Huangbai*, imported from overseas, ground).
