Deficiency consumption with upward qi (Xu Lao Shang Qi) is a condition caused by deficiency of lung qi and excess of pathogenic factors. When qi accumulates in the lungs, it causes the pulmonary lobes to expand and the dispersing function to be obstructed, leading to blockage of the upper jiao (upper burner) and qi stagnation in the chest, thus resulting in the disease of upward qi. The term "deficiency consumption with upward qi" arises because the Lung governs qi and belongs to Yang; an excess of Yang qi leads to fullness in the Lung and rebellion of qi upwards. Deficiency consumption diseases may involve injury to both Yin and Yang, or imbalance between blood and qi. In this case, there is insufficiency of Yin qi and excess of Yang qi, hence the symptom of upward qi.
