Whenever dysentery presents with mixed pus and blood, dark clotted blood in flakes, and discharge resembling chicken or duck liver along with blood, it is termed Gu Li (Gu Dysentery). This condition arises from the imbalance of cold and heat across seasons, where damp-toxic qi invades the human meridians, gradually penetrating into the zang-fu organs. The toxic vapors, carrying heat, contend with the blood, lodging in the intestines, presenting a state similar to being possessed by a parasitic worm disease; hence the name Gu Li.
Formulas
For treating dysentery in individuals under thirty years of age due to cold, as well as cholera, which cannot be cured by various medicines, and when intestinal sliding occurs as if struck by Gu Zhu (parasitic infection):
Liao Zi (Polygoni Hydropiperis Herba), Ai Xie (Artemisiae Argyi Folium Pulvis) (each 2 sheng); Long Dan (Gentianae Radix), Xu Duan (Dipsaci Radix), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) (each 3 liang); Shu Jiao (Zanthoxyli Pericarpium) (remove eyes and sweat residue); Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata); Gui Xin (Cinnamomi Ramulus); Ku Shen (Sophorae Flavescentis Radix); Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma); Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Praeparata); Shu Wei Cao (Salviae Miltiorrhizae Herba) (each 2 liang). Pound and sieve the above ingredients, mix with honey to form pills the size of paulownia seeds. Infants aged one year take one pill; toddlers aged three years take two pills; children aged five years take three pills; adults take five pills. Swallow with water. Treats cold-heat qi stagnating in the chest, sudden qi pain surrounding the navel. Avoid peaches and plums.
Pi San (Bark Powder)
Treats damage and disturbance of the zang-fu organs, weakness of the stomach and intestines, blood seeping into the intestines, wind-cold pathogens taking advantage of the deficiency, resulting in bloody stools with dark clotted flakes.
