Chapter: Supplementary Discussion on Various Zhu Diseases
Category: Formulas
[Translation]
The so-called "various Zhu diseases" (various contagious, lingering, and chronic consumptive diseases) are caused by pathogenic qi infusing into the human body. These diseases often arise due to mental weakness, emptiness of meridians and collaterals, external contraction of wind-cold-damp-heat pathogens, improper diet, overwork, or inadequate recovery after contracting cold damage (Shanghan). If caused by food factors, it is called "Food Zhu"; if formed from deficiency consumption (Xu Lao), it is called "Consumption Zhu"; if pathogenic qi invades from outside, it is called "Leakage Zhu". The aforementioned various Zhu diseases are named according to their etiology. If pathogenic qi infuses into the Lung, it is called "Qi Zhu"; if it infuses into Ying-Blood, it is called "Blood Zhu"; if prolonged illness damages the marrow and bones, it is called "Bone Zhu". The aforementioned various Zhu diseases are named according to the location of the pathology. There is also "Stone Zhu," referring to its hardness like stone; "Wandering Zhu," referring to its migratory pain without constancy. The aforementioned various Zhu diseases are named according to the morphological changes of the disease. To treat various Zhu diseases and distinguish whether it belongs to Zhu, one can cover a piece of paper over the painful area, burn hair until charred, and place the burnt hair on the paper. If the hair sticks to the paper, it indicates that Zhu qi is pulling it; if it does not stick, it is not Zhu disease. After clarifying the cause, treat according to the syndrome. Regarding the pulse diagnosis for various Zhu diseases, a floating and large pulse indicates curability, while a fine and rapid pulse indicates difficulty in treatment. The term "Zhu" implies staying or stopping, indicating that the condition lingers and is easily transmitted to others. The manifestations of Zhu disease are diverse: some present with alternating chills and fever, some with skin itching or rashes, some with abdominal distension and stabbing pain, some with heaviness in limbs and joints. The pathological changes are manifold. Ancient texts record thirty-six types, ninety-nine types, as well as the five aforementioned Zhu diseases, but do not explicitly list specific names. Generally, they share similarities with various Zhu diseases.
