When a carbuncle (Yong) has already suppurated, use a formula to drain pus.
Swallow one seed of Coix Seed (Yiyiren). Do not take too much.
Another prescription
Mix Vinegar (Ku Jiu) with Sparrow Droppings (Que Shi) and apply to the head of the carbuncle. The size should be like a mung bean. It will soon perforate.
Treating Chancre (Ju). Generally, chancre manifests as a sudden dark spot in the flesh, the size of a bean or millet grain. Severe cases are as large as a plum pit. It may be red, black, white, or green.
There is a nodule with deep roots; pressing it causes pain radiating to the heart. Initially small, after a long time, the surrounding area swells completely. The color is purple-black. It can rot bones and tendons. The toxin enters the Zang-Fu organs.
Cut away all thick flesh where affected. Alternatively, heat an iron tool until red-hot and cauterize three times until charred like carbon. Moxibustion on the dark area for one hundred moxa cones is optimal. In early spring, thinly apply Sorrel leaves (Suanmo Ye) around the periphery to prevent spread. Drink Sunflower Root Juice (Kui Gen Zhi), Rhinoceros Horn Juice (Xijiao Zhi), or Cimicifuga Juice (Shengma Zhi) to clear heat. Internal and external treatments follow the methods for Erysipelas (Dan Du).
Treat back chancre with burning hot pain.
Take subsoil from dry human manure found in the wild. Mix with well water and apply. It feels as cold as ice penetrating the five viscera.
Treat newly onset carbuncles and chancre.
Take a copper plate from high ground. Add a few drops of water. Grind to extract juice and boil into a paste. Apply with paper dressing. Two or three applications lead to cure. If the lump persists for many days, apply more frequently or administer orally.
Treat chancre sores.
Use four taels of Thousand-Year Calcined Stone (Qiannian Duanshi) and one date-wood spoon. Burn to ash and grind into fine powder. Apply to the sore opening. Another method uses Rubia Root (Qian Gen) burned to ash, mixed with sesame oil.
Treat carbuncles and chancre.
Chew Red Smartweed Leaves (Hong Liao Ye) in the mouth. Do not let hands touch them.

Use Large-leaf Grass (Daye Cao), Penetration Bone Grass (Tougu Cao), and Achyranthes Root (Niuxi Cao). Grind finely. Mix with flour and apply.

If restless and confused, add Ginseng (Renshen) and Poria with Hostwood (Fushen). If deficient with fever, add Rehmannia Root (Dihuang) and Trichosanthes Root (Gualou Gen). For tidal fever, add Bupleurum Root (Chaihu) and Groundcherry Root Bark (Digupi). If thirst persists, add Anemarrhena Rhizome (Zhimu) and Adzuki Bean (Chixiaodou). If deficient irritability, add Goji Berry (Gouqi) and Tian Baliao (Tiandianli).
For hiccups, add Clove (Dingxiang).
Treat carbuncles and chancre.
Swallow one seed of Burdock Fruit (Eshi Zi) to draw out the head of the carbuncle.
Washing Method. Treat gangrenous carbuncles and chancre with unceasing pus.
Astragalus Root (Huangqi), Angelica Sinensis (Danggui), Akebia Stem (Bailian), Patrinia Root (Baijiang), Licorice Root (Gancao) (each two liang); Scutellaria Root (Huangqin), Ligusticum Rhizome (Chuanxiong), Red Peony Root (Chishao) (each one-and-a-half liang). Cut the above herbs.
Decoct in nine sheng of water until three sheng remain. Strain. Wash the sore one hundred times. Dry with a cloth. Then apply ointment. If pain is severe, decoct the herbs in pig trotter juice. In summer, use Agastache Herb (Huoxiang).
Huoxiang Tuoli San. Treats carbuncles, chancre, ding swelling with heat.
Angelica Sinensis (Danggui), Cimicifuga Rhizome (Shengma), Kudzu Root (Gegen), White Stiff Silkworm (Bai Jiangcan), Agastache Herb (Huoxiang), Forsythia Fruit (Lianqiao), Gardenia Fruit (Shanzhizi), Licorice Root (Gancao), Akebia Stem (Mutong), Arctium Fruit (Niubangzi) (each three qian); Rhubarb (Dahuang), Yinchen, Dianthera (Qumai) (each five qian). Cut the above herbs. Each dose weighs one liang. Decoct in wine and water. Strain and take warm. Take on an empty stomach if the sore is lower; after meals if higher. Take continuously for three to four days and nights if painful.
For those scorched by fire... apply thickly to the sore. If hot...

Qilinjie San. Greatly treats onset of carbuncles, chancre, and toxic sores. Very effective.
Dragon's Blood (Qilinjie) (ground), Red Poria (Chi Fuling) (powdered), White Poria (Bai Fuling) (powdered), Myrrh (Moyao) (ground), Licorice Joint (Gancao Jie) (beaten, each one liang), Old Loquat Leaf Vine Fruit (Laotianluozi) (one, cut open with skin; two new ones). Decoct the fruit and licorice joint in one liang of honey and two sheng of pure wine in a silver or ceramic vessel. Boil down to three cups.
Knot... no longer...
After perforation, take three more doses. Wait for pus to transform and expel accumulated heat-toxin resembling fish saliva. This does not disturb the Zang-Fu organs.
Shusheng San. Treats all carbuncles, chancre, swelling, and toxicity that do not resolve.
Snail (Nuowan) (two, finely ground), Trichosanthes Peel (Gualou Rang) (five pieces the size of a bullet, powdered), Yellow Hibiscus Flower and Leaves (Huang Shukui Huaye) (both can be powdered, use two qian). Use Yellow Hibiscus flower juice to grind the above powders into a thick paste. Apply to the sore, leaving the opening. Change three times daily. The original text says effective in three days; recent use shows effect in one day.
Huadu San. Treats carbuncles, chancre, toxins, back carbuncles, brain chancre, and women's breast abscesses.
Yin-growing Grass (Beiyin Cao) (grows in shady places of deep cliffs, marshes, valleys, and small streams, leaves resemble Elsholtzia), Honeysuckle Vine (Jinyin Teng) (same as Lonicera japonica vine). Use a large handful of each. Pound coarsely. Add one sheng of wine and one sheng of water. Decoct together to one sheng. Strain. Add another sheng of hot wine. Stir well. Divide into two doses. Take warm. Apply the dregs to the sore. Pain stops immediately upon application. Unformed lesions dissipate. Formed lesions converge and perforate. Very effective.
Wubai San. Treats carbuncles and back carbuncles with intense heat, redness, and swelling, as well as non-healing perforations and women's breast abscesses.
Angelica Dahurica (Baizhi), Phellodendron Bark (Baixianpi), Bletilla Tuber (Baiji), Gentian Root (Baiwei), Akebia Stem (Bailian) (equal parts). Powder the above. Each dose is three qian. Add one "zi" of Frankincense (Ruxiang) powder.
Mix with fresh water and take. Also apply to the sore.
Chuchong Gao. Treats gangrenous carbuncles, chancre, and bone chancre.
Use one dead toad (Zisi Xiam). One handful of hair. Add one-and-a-half jin of lard. Simmer the two ingredients until consumed. When cool, add one he of salt. Mix. Apply the ointment into the sore. Change once daily. Cure when worms are fully expelled.
Another prescription. When the sore opening becomes a large cavity.
Mulberry Root Bark (Sangbaipi) (one fen), Angelica Sinensis (Danggui) (half fen). Powder the above and sprinkle dry. Externally, use Mugwort (Bei Ai) dipped in honey-water, ground fine, to plug the opening.
Sangbai San. Treats sore openings with heat attacking causing pain, redness, ulceration, and excessive discharge.
Mulberry Root Bark (Sangbaipi) (new, one liang), Sophora Root (Kushen), Sophora Flower (Huaihua), Trichosanthes Root (Tianhuafen) (sun-dried, half liang each). Pound into fine powder and sprinkle dry. Still decoct Sophora Root and Mulberry Root Bark soup to wash. If itching, add Areca Seed (Binglang) and Calomel (Qingfen).
Wuxiang Lianqiao Tang. Recorded by Zhi Ning in Yijian Fang. Comprehensive for carbuncles and chancre. Its treatment principle lies in venting heat and extracting toxins, supporting the interior and draining pus. Even without adding Clove to Forsythia, it is highly effective. Begin with dispersing methods, such as Chuanxiong Xianghuang San. Or equal parts of Angelica Dahurica and Rhubarb, ground fine. Mix with honey and vinegar to apply to red, swollen, painful areas. Honey soup is also acceptable. Change once daily. Next, use Batudu Wan. Alum (Mingfan) one liang calcined. Powdered. Made into wax pills the size of paulownia seeds. Take thirty pills each time with pure wine. Stabilizes the toxin preventing spread. To support the interior, use Fanxiang San.
Cimicifuga Rhizome (Chuan Shengma), Phytolacca Root (Shanglu Gen), Rhubarb (Dahuang) (each half liang), Vietnamese Rosewood (Fan Jiangzhen Xiang), Turmeric (Wu Jianghuang), Clear Alum (Ming Baifei) (ground and washed, each one fen). Powder the above. Mix with warm water and rub on swollen areas. Feels bone-chillingly cold. Swelling disappears immediately. Remove alum if broken; use alum if unbroken. Treats all carbuncles, chancre, swelling, and toxicity. Broken but unulcerated. Draws out wind and resolves internally. Extremely effective.
Take this medicine urgently for carbuncles and chancre. Especially effective for boils and nodules.
One fresh or dried Trichosanthes fruit. Cut shell and pulp. Add ten flat peppercorns. Remove eyes. Do not use closed-mouth ones. Five cun of raw Licorice Root, cut. Three pieces of Frankincense, size of soap nut. Decoct in three large cups of pure wine until one cup remains. Clarify. Take one liang warm. Immediate effect.
Da Che'ao San
Euphorbia Root (Daji), Genkwa Flower (Yuanhua), Chrysanthemum (Juhua), Areca Seed (Binglang), Rhapontic Rhizome (Loulu) (above each half liang); Rhubarb (Dahuang), Scutellaria Root (Huangqin) (each three fen); Calomel (Qingfen) (one qian). Powder the above. For every two qian, add one qian of Bull Frog (Che'ao) and one qian of Calomel. Mix evenly. Take at dawn with mustard soup. After walking about five li, it expels foul matter three to four times, then stops naturally. Young and strong people add one qian.
Xiao Che'ao San
Bull Frog (Che'ao), Calomel (Qingfen), Licorice Root (Gancao), Rhubarb (Dahuang) (equal parts). Powder finely and mix. Take one Trichosanthes fruit, decoct in one bowl of wine. Take the above medicine mixed with this on an empty stomach.
Shenxiao Gao. Treats all toxic sores of carbuncles and chancre.
Stove Ash Juice (Zao Hui Zhi - also known as Bing Yao), Oyster Shell Ash (Li Qie Hui) (sifted fine), Glutinous Rice (Nuomi) (pounded white). First put Bing Yao in a clay pot and expose to sun until slightly warm. Then layer ash and rice in the pot. Leave about half an inch of Bing Yao on top. Expose to sun again. Ash and rice change color... Apply with hand... Swelling moves... Causes bleeding. For women and children, adjust dosage. If no sun, use fire...
Baihua San. Treats all carbuncles, chancre, and various malignant sores.
Yellow Hibiscus Flower (Huang Shukui Hua) (seven dried flowers), Phellodendron Bark (Huangbai) (half liang, remove coarse bark), Coptis Rhizome (Huanglian) (remove threads, two qian), Gardenia Fruit (Shanzhizi) (three fruits, remove shell), Curcuma Longa (Yujin)... Head. Then... Medicine. Pus exhausted. Peach Owl (Tao Xiao). Then... Apply medicine to sore. Apply at bedtime. Two or three...
Dahuang Tang. Vents heat and extracts toxins. Sun Simiao boiled only Rhubarb and took it to induce rapid purging. Later generations added two ingredients. Effect is miraculous.
Rhubarb (Dahuang) (one liang), Momordica Seed (Mubie Ren) (half liang), Licorice Joint (Gancao Jie) (two-and-a-half qian). Each dose is three qian. Decoct with a little wine.
Wuxiang Lianqiao Tang
Costus Root (Muxiang), Agarwood (Chenxiang) (three fen), Clove (Dingxiang) (half liang), Forsythia Fruit (Lianqiao) (remove heart), Angelica Root (Duhuo) (three fen, or stir-fried Notopterygium Root), Belamcanda Rhizome (Shegan), Cimicifuga Rhizome (Shengma), Ephedra Herb (Mahuang), Akebia Stem (Mutong), Taxillus Branch (Sangjisheng) (best for this disease; if unavailable, double Shengma). Powder the above. Each dose is three qian. Decoct until seven-tenths remain. Add a little silver foil and simmer. This is Li's formula. Those without Rhubarb can take more freely. Alternate with Loulu Tang.
Also Chen Wuyue's formula is the same as above.
Add Frankincense (Ruxiang), Steamed Rhubarb (Zheng Dahuang) (one liang). Each dose is four qian. Decoct in two cups of water until half remains. Take hot on an empty stomach. If not purged, take again. Purge until foul matter is gone.
Qianjin Loulu Tang
Rhapontic Rhizome (Loulu), Forsythia Fruit (Lianqiao), Scutellaria Root (Huangqin), Akebia Stem (Bailian), Bitter Orange (Zhike) (remove pulp, stir-fried with bran), Cimicifuga Rhizome (Shengma), Licorice Root (Gancao) (roasted), Ephedra Herb (Mahuang) (one liang, remove root and joints), Rhubarb (Dahuang) (one-and-a-half liang, baked), Mirabilite (Piaoxiao) (one liang, ground and added later). Powder the above. Each dose is two qian. Add three slices of ginger and three mint leaves. Decoct in one cup of water. Take warm on an empty stomach.
Another formula named Luoshi Yin
Harvest leaves and stems, sieve clean. Pound to extract natural juice, two bowls. Mix three parts juice with two parts honey. Drink according to constitution. Apply dregs to sore. Dissipates overnight. Can be used after perforation. Emerges from Bencao, extremely effective.
Muxiang San. Treats sores difficult to resolve, unable to form pus, pain unceasing.
Groundcherry Root Bark (Digupi) (one liang, remove soil and bark), Costus Root (Muxiang) (half liang), Pangolin Scale (Chuanshanjia) (one qian, roasted yellow), Musk (Shexiang) (one zi). Powder the above. Take three qian mixed with wine. Also for infants developing carbuncles after smallpox. Take mixed with rice drink. Effect is miraculous.
Zhengtong Gao. Treats finger carbuncle pain penetrating bone marrow. Heel swelling and pain.
Mud Wasp Nest (Nifeng Ke) (nests on walls, doors, silkworm nests, under chairs), Frankincense (Ruxiang) (a little). Grind together evenly. Mix with fresh cold water and apply. Pain stops immediately. Another method uses strong vinegar.
Treat Wasp Nest Carbuncle.
Use mud from black wasp nest mixed with vinegar to apply. Reapply when dry. Stops itching and pain immediately. The above formula was obtained from Lei Zhongguan, Magistrate of Xunzhou. His family used this medicine for three generations. Villagers say it brings reward for merit.
Treat various swellings and toxins, intending to become carbuncles or chancre.
Use Adzuki Bean powder (Chixiaodou Mo). Mix with water and apply. Dissipates toxic gas. Often used by modern people with good effect.

Boil Pearl Plant Juice (Zizhu Zhi). Wash with it.
Mainly detoxifies carbuncles and chancre, extremely effective.
Use Crossbow Bolt Wood (Chaizi Gu) from Wanzhou, which is best. Decoct with grass stems in water and take.
Treat malignant toxic carbuncles and chancre. May extend to groin and thighs. Painful, acute spasms, pulling into lower abdomen, unbearable. Kills within one night.
Use Fennel Seedling Leaves (Huixiang Miaoye). Grind to extract one sheng of juice and take. Three to four times daily. Apply dregs to swelling. Roots can also be used in winter. This is a foreign formula. Since Yongjia era, used to revive the dying. Extremely effective.
Treat all carbuncles, chancre, and back carbuncles.
Use large white winter melon (Bai Donggua), about one or two dou. Harvest in winter as vegetable, press to remove juice. Preserve with honey as fruit. When patients occur, slice a large piece and place on sore. Replace when hot. Excellent for dispersing heat-toxin.
Treat initial sores appearing on back and ribs. Uncertain if carbuncle or chancre. If Yang stagnates in Yin, it becomes Carbuncle (Yong). If Yin stagnates in Yang, it becomes Chancre (Ju). Carbuncle has shiny red skin. Chancre has wrinkled flesh, dull luster.
Use purple-skinned onion (Hu). Slice one fen thick and cover. Use moxibustion. If already painful, moxa until pain stops. If not painful, moxa until pain starts. Moxa as soon as felt. All effective. Still assess and center moxa on the middle of the onion. People often miss this. At first sight, the sore is small, unwilling to moxa. What a pity.
Treat carbuncles and chancre producing foul, evil flesh.
Use White Radish (Bai Ru) powder to apply. Stop when flesh is complete. Only apply various ointments. If flesh does not grow, apply Huang Ru powder. If foul flesh still remains, use Lacquer Tree Skin (Qitou Chi Pi) powder. Use half a qian-bi. Mix with three qian-bi of Bai Ru powder. Apply together for cure.
Treat mineral drug activation causing carbuncles, chancre, and thirst.
Grind Bodhisattva Stone (Pusa Shi) with water and take.

Wild Wolf's Paw Seeds (Yelangbazhi) from Quanzhou, one or two grains. Cut fine, take with wine. Purge three times for cure. Or take with water only. Frankincense and Snail (Tianluo) ground evenly. Treats buttock chancre.

Cassia Seed (Po Gu Zhi) roasted and ground fine. Take with wine.
Treat carbuncles and chancre.
Burn Purple Shellfish (Zi Beike) to ash. Apply.

Boil Bauhinia Wood (Zijing Mu) juice and take.
Dihuang Gao. Treats all carbuncles and chancre. Also treats poison insect bites.
Gypsum (Shigao) (calcined), Agastache Leaf (Huoxiang Ye), Freshwater Mussel Powder (Bang Fen), Angelica Dahurica (Baizhi), Realgar (Xionghuang) (ground). Equal parts. Powder together. Mix with fresh Rehmannia Juice (Dihuang Ziran Zhi) to appropriate thickness. Apply around the sore, leaving the head. If broken, leave the opening, do not apply. When dry, reapply. If medicine is thick, moisten with fresh water. Effect is miraculous.
Shenxiao Gao. Treats carbuncles and back carbuncles. Heat-toxin knot. Swelling, pain, hardness. Stops pain.
Akebia Stem (Mutong) (cut), Licorice Root (Gancao) (roasted), Angelica Sinensis (Danggui) (roasted and cut), Angelica Dahurica (Baizhi), Saposhnikovia Root (Fangfeng) (remove radix), Asarum Root (Xixin) (remove seedlings and leaves), Gardenia Seed (Zhizi Ren), Coptis Rhizome (Huanglian) (remove threads), Scutellaria Root (Huangqin) (remove black heart, each one liang), Lead Tetroxide (Qiandan) (six liang), Willow Branch (Chuilu Zhi) (cut, two liang), Beeswax (La) (half liang), Pure Oil (Qingyou) (one jin). Except for Dan, La, and Oil... Stir with willow whip until black.
Treats all chancre, periosteal abscess. Root in Zang-Fu. Joint swelling. Ding swelling, evil pulses, various toxins. All heal.
Honeycomb (Lufengfang), Messy Hair (Luafa), Snake Skin (Shepi). Burn the above three ingredients to ash. Take with wine, size of a cun-bi. Three times daily.
