[Song Kaibao]
[Flavor and Nature] Bitter, warm, non-toxic.
[Indications] Primarily treats various wind-pathogen disorders, unblocks and promotes the functions of the five zang organs, eliminates cold stagnation in the abdomen, phlegm-fluid retention in the heart and diaphragm, long-standing accumulations and mass formations (zheng jia), pi qi masses (subcostal痞块), pus and foul fluids retained in the bladder, cold pain in the waist and knees, and treats traumatic fractures. Long-term consumption prevents warm diseases and malaria.
[Verification] Says: It grows on Shangluo Mountain in Shangzhou and Pingze in Huashan. Currently, it is found in Shaanxi, Hedong, Hebei, Biandong, and various prefectures in Jianghu. The best quality comes from places where no sound of water is heard. It sprouts before other grasses; initially growing as a vine, the stem is like a hairpin shaft with four edges, leaves are like willow leaves layered in tiers, with six or seven leaves per tier arranged in a circle like a chariot wheel. Flowers bloom in the seventh lunar month, having six petals, pale purple or greenish-white. The inflorescence resembles that of Lantai seeds or chrysanthemum capitula. Fruits are green. Roots are dense with many fibrous roots resembling millet grains; they must decay annually and send up new shoots from the sides the following year. With age, it becomes more lush. One root cluster has hundreds of fibrous roots, about two chi long. Roots are harvested in the ninth lunar month; when fresh, they are yellow-black; when dry, deep black. Commonly called "Iron-foot Weiling". Another variety has identical fibrous roots but yellow or white root color, which is unsuitable for use. Processing: Shade-dry for over a month, grind into powder, sieve, and use. Avoid tea and wheat juice.
[Commentary] Says: It possesses majesty that inspires awe and spirituality that enables penetration, undergoing immortal transformation to serve as its substance and function. Its bitter flavor and warm nature embody the characteristics of Wind and Fire. Wind obtains it to transform into Summer Qi; Pulse Qi obtains it to circulate freely. It disseminates the old, penetrates horizontally and vertically, empties what is excessive, and fills what is deficient. It is a dispersing and unblocking agent in urgent prescriptions. Ancestors said: Majestic, powerful, spiritual, and wondrous, possessing an immortal charm. Its nature is swift, its effect rapid, its force峻猛 (intense/severe), and its potential harm profound. Like Lord Shang governing Qin, establishing the wooden pole to verify trust, orders shown in the morning were executed by evening. Thus, it primarily treats chronic fatigue and entrenched cold pathologies, where Yuan Yang (Primordial Yang) is exhausted, similar to rotten coins and red old grain, merely lacking proper intervention; through this herb, great results can be achieved. However, if military strength is weak and provisions scarce, employing such a desperate "back-to-the-river" formation is ultimately not a foolproof strategy.
(Vertical penetration through the three periods, horizontal coverage across all directions, emptying all excess, filling all deficiency, one can fully attain the miraculous utility of immortal transformation and divine operation without fixed methods.)
