【Analysis】It is stated that: Insect white wax is produced by wax insects on Ligustrum lucidum trees. Those originating from Sichuan, Yunnan, Hengyang, and Yongzhou possess superior efficacy. Locals cultivate these trees extensively, naming them "Wax Trees." They resemble Dongqing (Ilex cornuta), appearing emerald green after frost, standing firm in the wind when branches are shaken, hence named Ligustrum (Lady's Privet). The insects are white when young to produce wax; in late autumn, they age and turn purple-red. They leave eggs forming chambers, clustered beside branches, initially small like millet grains. By spring, they enlarge to the size of beans or Euryale seeds, hanging heavily on branches, resembling insect nests or mantis egg cases. This is called "Wax Seed" or "Wax Child." Inside are white eggs like lice eggs, with dozens to hundreds per chamber. After Lixia (Start of Summer), they are picked branch by branch and tied to various trees. After Mangzhong (Grain in Ear) and approaching Xiazhi (Summer Solstice), the chambers break open, insects emerge, crawling along stems, sucking sap and excreting saliva, resembling solidified frost. By Chushu (End of Heat), they are harvested as "Wax Residue." After Bailu (White Dew), they adhere firmly and are difficult to remove. Collected material is refined, filtered clear, steamed in a steamer basket, dripped into porcelain vessels, and allowed to cool into blocks, yielding the wax. In May of the Xin-Si year, in Changzhou prefecture, planted legumes were entirely devoured by green worms. In August, digging at the roots yielded dozens of worms per plant, four to five cun long, weighing three to four liang, stiff and white like fat. When burned, they all turned into white wax. My father’s friend, Mr. Zhou Zhan, witnessed this anomaly personally and instructed me to record it.
Ancestors said: The fluid of Ligustrum is fermented in the insect’s abdomen and excreted from its mouth. In autumn, it matures white, resembling the adipose tissue within human skin and muscle textures. Thus, for wind-toxins overflowing externally, nothing is better than this.
[Commentary] It is said: Eggs are laid on Ligustrum, wax is formed on branches. It begins with Yin decline (May) and completes with Great Observation (August). It inherits the concentrated Qi of Ligustrum wood. The Xun trigram enters within, facilitating rapid distribution and transformation. Therefore, it primarily acts on the central "Divine Chamber" (referring to the Heart/Mind), scattering essence to the Five Viscera and distributing Qi to the Five Forms. The Five Forms are the external tissues associated with the Five Viscera.
(Feathered, naked-scaled, and shelled animals are collectively called "Chong/Worms." When matter enters Yin, its color peels away to become white, retreating and storing tightly, transforming through distribution into wax. Essence, Spirit, Soul, Corporeal Soul, and Intellect are the Five Spirits. Heart, Kidney, Liver, Lung, and Spleen are the Five Viscera. Skin/Hair, Blood, Flesh, Tendons, and Bones are the Five Forms. The Kidney stores Essence and corresponds to Bone; the Heart stores Spirit and corresponds to Blood/Vessels; the Lung stores Corporeal Soul and corresponds to Skin/Hair. May represents Yin decline; August represents Great Observation.)
