Cunninghamia Lignum (Cunninghamia wood): Has the effect of dispersing swelling.
Pungent and warm in nature, it opens up stagnation. It eliminates fullness in the heart and abdomen, and treats Hong Kong foot (swelling and pain in the feet) causing swelling and pain. (Liu Zinong's *Jiushi Fang* records: A patient suffered from Hong Kong foot; at midnight, he experienced blockage and suffocation, with hard masses under the ribs like stones, falling into a coma and nearing death. Zheng Xunmei transmitted the Cunninghamia Decoction. After taking half a meal's worth of time, the patient had a large bowel movement, the masses dissipated, and qi flow was restored. The formula consists of one sheng of Cunninghamia nodes, one sheng of Tangerine Leaf, seven Areca Seeds crushed with their kernels, and three shengs of child urine boiled together, divided into two doses. If the first dose results in smooth defecation, stop taking the second dose.) It disperses wind-toxin and removes foul qi. It can be used to wash toxic sores and lac poisoning. Those with slight deficiency should avoid using it. Its wood does not produce white ants. Burned to ash, it is an excellent accelerant for gunpowder.
Cinnamomi Cortex (Cinnamon bark): Extremely drying, it tonifies the Fire of the Gate of Vitality (Mingmen), soothes the Liver, unblocks blood vessels, and guides fire back to its origin.
Pungent, sweet, and extremely hot, with slight toxicity. Its aroma is dense and purely yang. It enters the Blood aspect of the Liver and Kidney meridians. It tonifies the insufficiency of the Ministerial Fire of the Gate of Vitality. (The innate ancestral qi located between the two kidneys is the True Fire. Without this True Yang Fire, one cannot steam and transform dregs into essence, leading to spleen and stomach failure, exhaustion of qi, and death.) It benefits Yang and dissipates Yin. It treats stubborn cold and deep-seated chill, abdominal pain in the lower jiao, Ben Tun (running piglet) and hernia masses. It unblocks pain in all vessels, guides various medicines, and can suppress Liver Wind. (Wood withers when encountering Cinnamon; if Cinnamon is shaved and nailed into tree roots, the tree dies.) Meanwhile, it supports Spleen Earth. (When Liver Wood is excessive, it overacts on Spleen Earth; the pungency soothes Liver Wood, and the sweetness benefits Spleen Earth.) It treats loss of appetite due to deficiency-cold and diarrhea caused by dampness excess. (When Spleen Earth is controlled by Liver Wood, it cannot control water; ancient diuretic formulas often use this herb, such as Wu Ling San.) It guides rootless fire down and returns it to its origin. It treats cough with qi obstruction, red and swollen eyes, Ge Yang sore throat, upper heat and lower cold syndromes, etc. (Treating heat with heat is called "conforming treatment." If Lung heat fails to descend, heat signs appear above and cold feet below; misuse will bring disaster immediately.) It unblocks menstruation, induces labor, and causes abortion. (Pungent and hot nature can move blood.) Jiaozhi Cinnamon is of the best quality. (Loose texture, straight bark, floral patterns, purple flesh with black oil, sweet taste with less pungency; now difficult to obtain.) Mengzi Cinnamon is next best and usable. (Not far from Jiaozhi.) Annan Cinnamon and Dongjing Cinnamon are also usable. (These three types have slightly loose texture, straight bark, floral patterns, purple flesh, more yellow oil, less black oil, sweet taste with more pungency.) Yao Cinnamon, Xun Cinnamon, and Zijing Cinnamon. (All are heavy, bark not straight, floral patterns present but inferior quality, very pungent with slight sweetness.) They are ineffective in treating diseases. Foreign Cinnamon and Yunnan Cinnamon. (Texture is tight and heavy, cut open to find white dots forming threads inside the flesh, pungent and bitter taste, feels sticky on the tongue, even causing numbness.) These are highly harmful and must never be used. Remove the rough bark. (The toxicity lies in the bark.) Avoid roasting over fire. Must be chopped before use; add after other herbs have decocted, boil for one or two boils, then take. It pairs well with Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, Licorice Root, and Ophiopogonis Radix. Contraindicated with raw Scallion Stem and Red Halloysite. (For tense leg tendons, mix Cinnamon powder with white wine and apply externally; for unilateral swelling of external genitals, mix Cinnamon powder with water to form a measure of one square inch and apply externally.)
