This is Huai Shi (Sophorae Fructus, i.e., Sophora japonica fruit). It drains wind-heat, clears the Liver, and cools the Large Intestine.
Bitter and cold in nature. It clears the Liver and Gallbladder, cools the Large Intestine, and disperses wind-heat. It treats irritability, dizziness caused by wind, hemorrhoidal bleeding, and Chang Feng (intestinal wind) with blood in stool. (Blood before defecation is called Wai Zhi [external hemorrhoids]; blood after defecation is called Nei Zhi [internal hemorrhoids]; flesh protruding from the anus is called Ju Zhi [prolapsed hemorrhoids]; a hole above the anus is called Zhi Lou [anal fistula]; parasites within the lesion are called Chong Zhi [parasitic hemorrhoids]. The general treatment method uses Huai Jiao (Sophorae Fructus), Di Yu (Sanguisorbae Radix), Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix), and Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) to cool blood and generate blood; Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) and Qin Jiao (Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix) to dispel wind-dampness; Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) and Xiong Duan (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma) to harmonize blood; Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix) and Zhi Ke (Aurantii Fructus) to broaden the intestines; Sheng Ma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) to raise yang. Formulas for treating Chang Feng are roughly similar, but one should not rely solely on cold-natured drugs; tonifying agents must be combined to achieve success.) It also treats yin sores, damp itching, brightens the eyes, and reduces tearing. (Clearing Liver heat reduces tearing, as tears are related to Liver heat.) It strengthens teeth and darkens beard hair. (Huai tree is the essence of the Void Star; collected on the Shang Si day in the tenth lunar month, soaked in ox gall, dried in shade for one hundred days, taken orally after meals, one pill at a time, turning white hair black again; it is especially suitable for Chang Feng and hemorrhoidal bleeding.) It has insecticidal and abortifacient properties. Huai tree nature is purely Yin; those with deficiency-cold should avoid it. Even if it is deficiency-heat rather than excess-fire, do not administer recklessly. Remove the single seed and five seeds, crush with a copper pestle, steam with cow's milk.
Huai Hua (Sophorae Flos) (drains heat and cools blood). Bitter and cool in nature. Its functions are the same as Huai Shi. It cools blood, treats red eyes due to wind-heat, dysentery with red and white discharge, various hemorrhoids, Chang Feng, hematemesis, metrorrhagia, epistaxis, and other bleeding conditions. (Bleeding from the tongue like a thread is called She Nu [lingual bleeding]; apply roasted and powdered Huai Hua topically.) Avoid using together with Huai Shi. Those containing stamens and aged for a long time are superior. Lightly stir-fry before use.
Also known as Jin Ling Zi (Evodiae Fructus). It drains damp-heat, treats hernia, and kills parasites.
Bitter, cold, and slightly toxic. It can guide heat from the Small Intestine and Bladder downward, thereby drawing down Ministerial Fire from the Pericardium, promoting urination, and serving as a key herb for treating hernia qi. It also treats mania due to heat in Shang Han (Cold Damage), abdominal pain due to heat-jue, carbuncles, scabies, and kills three types of parasites. (Yi Jian Zhi records: In cases of Xiao Ke [wasting-thirst syndrome] where parasites consume body fluids, decoct the root bark strongly, add a small amount of She Xiang (Moschus), ingest to expel parasites, and thirst will cease naturally.) Bitter and cold in nature, it is only suitable for killing parasites; those with Spleen-Stomach deficiency-cold strictly avoid it. Those produced in Sichuan are of good quality. Steam with wine until the skin is soft. (This is using cold medicine with heat application.) Scrape off the skin, take the flesh, remove the core. When using, use either the flesh or the core, not both. If using the core, crush it, and use Hui Xiang (Foeniculi Fructus) as a guiding drug. Huai Hua (spread under mats to kill fleas and lice, efficacy verified.)
