Astringent, arrests sweating.
Salty and cool. Arrests deficiency sweating and night sweats. (Sweat is the fluid of the Heart; wheat is the grain corresponding to the Heart; floating wheat lacks flesh, thus it can cool the Heart.) Treats labor fever and bone-steaming tidal fever (a sensation of heat emanating from the bones due to yin deficiency). Specifically refers to the wheat grains that float up after being washed with water. Use after roasting. Wheat bran, sweet and cold. (The cooling property of wheat resides entirely in its husk; therefore, flour without the husk becomes hot.) It shares the same nature as floating wheat. (Its efficacy in arresting sweating is secondary.) Stir-fry with vinegar and steam. Apply externally with hot compress for waist and foot injuries from falls or fractures. Rheumatic bi-syndrome pain. (It can disperse blood stasis and relieve pain.) Cold-dampness podagra. Stagnant qi in the stomach and abdomen. Mutual exchange leading to sweating. All are beneficial. (For any sores, ulcers, or smallpox lesions that are ulcerated and cannot lie on a mat, use wheat bran filled into a mattress for sleeping; its cool and soft nature makes it indeed a wonderful method.) Maidou (Wheat mildew/black mold found on wheat ears just before ripening). Treats yang toxicity and warm toxicity, mania caused by extreme heat, severe thirst, and warm malaria.
Tonifies deficiency and clears heat.
Sweet, salty, slightly cold. Tonifies deficiency. Strengthens blood vessels. Improves complexion. Fills the five zang organs. Benefits qi and harmonizes the middle jiao. Clears heat and arrests diarrhea. Treats xiaoke (wasting-thirst syndrome). Facilitates digestion of grains and food.
Use rock sugar as a guiding drug. Flour, neutral in nature, harmonizes the stomach and expands the chest. Directs qi downward and resolves accumulation. Treats distension and promotes appetite. Cools blood and arrests thirst. (Zong said: Barley is cool, slippery, and greasy. For someone suffering from strangling throat wind [acute laryngeal edema] who cannot swallow food, make this flour into a thin paste for swallowing to assist stomach qi and calm the condition.)
Tonifies the middle and clears heat.
Sweet, slightly cold. Tonifies the middle jiao and clears heat. Long-term consumption increases strength and enables vigorous walking.
Purgative, promotes intestinal movement and directs qi downward.
Sweet, cold. Directs qi downward and expands the intestines. Treats stagnant accumulation in the stomach and intestines. (Meng Shen's *Shiliao Bencao* states: It can refine and cleanse filth and turbidity from the five zang organs. Zong said: It also resolves alcohol accumulation.)
Diarrhea with turbid discharge. Applied externally for ulcerated smallpox lesions. Scalds and burns. Those with deficiency-cold should not consume it. (For headache due to wind and wind-eye diseases, make buckwheat flour into cakes one qian in size, apply them to the four corners of the eyes, and moxa-burn with moxa cones the size of rice grains; the effect is miraculous.)
Ancient name: Sparrow wheat. Used for famine relief.
Sweet, neutral. Relieves hunger and lubricates the intestines. Pounding off the husk. Make into flour for steaming or eating. Also making into cakes for eating. All can be used for famine relief. Seedlings, expel dead fetus. (Boil in water and take warm; applicable when the placenta fails to descend.)
