Astringent.
Functions similarly to *Ostreae Concha* (Mu Li, 牡蛎). *Venerupis philippinarum* meat is salty and cold. It relieves thirst and resolves alcohol toxicity. *Meretrix meretrix* has patterned shells on its back. It additionally eliminates irritability and thirst, and promotes urination. (Generally, marine creatures are salty and cold with similar functions; freshwater clams and mussels, having not been immersed in saltwater, only clear heat and drain dampness, but cannot soften hardness.) Treats canker sores causing erosion in the mouth and nose.
Clears damp-heat.
Salty and cold. Resolves heat, dries dampness, transforms phlegm, dissipates accumulation, brightens the eyes, and treats canker sores. Treats regurgitation and phlegm-fluid retention in the chest and heart. (Mixed with rice water for administration.) Drains dampness from edema and cough due to fluid retention. (*Leibian Fang*: Stir-fry *Unio* powder on a new tile until red, add a small amount of *Indigo Naturalis* (Qing Dai, 青黛), mix with light vinegar and a few drops of sesame oil, administer 2 qian mixed.) Stops dysentery and vomiting/nausea. Applied externally for carbuncles and swellings. (Mixed with vinegar.) Applied to yin sores, damp sores, and pruritus due to miliaria. Meat is salty and cold. Clears heat, relieves thirst, removes dampness, resolves alcohol toxicity, brightens the eyes, and reduces redness. Treats lower jiao bleeding, metrorrhagia, leukorrhea, and hemorrhoids. (Extract juice for eye drops; effective for red eyes and dim vision.)
Functions similarly to *Unio*. (Soaking acne and carbuncle scabs with soaked raw *Corbicula* meat prevents scarring. *Corbicula* powder applied to all types of damp sores.)
Drains heat and calms fright.
Sweet, salty, and cold. Gestation is influenced by the moon. (As the saying goes: If there is wind on Shangsi Festival, pears have worms; if there is no moon on Mid-Autumn Festival, mussels do not conceive.) It is the accumulation of water essence. Water controls fire. Enters the Heart and Liver meridians. Calms the mind and anchors the soul. (The Liver stores the soul. An said: Although it drains heat, it also relies on its precious qi. Generally, substances with precious qi can calm the mind and anchor the soul, such as Gold Foil, *Amber*, and *Pearl*; Dragon Teeth calm the soul by borrowing their spiritual energy.) Descends phlegm, extracts toxins, closes wounds, and generates flesh. Treats fright-heat, chickenpox, and carbuncles. Expels dead fetus and placenta. (One liang of Pearl powder taken with bitter wine.) Drops into eyes to remove nebula. Wrapped in cotton and inserted into the ear to treat deafness. (Lu Tuan's *Pi Ya* states: Clams and mussels lack yin-yang distinction; males and females must be transformed by sparrows, thus they can produce pearls, focusing solely on yin essence.) Contraindicated in diseases not caused by fire-heat. Select fresh, clean specimens that have not been drilled or strung. Soak in milk for three days, grind into an extremely fine powder, like flying flour. (Pearls are the hardest; if not ground finely, they will damage the zang-fu organs.)
