Non-toxic. Vining growth.
Lagenaria siceraria (Hulu, 葫芦): Mainly treats edema and benefits Qi (modern interpretation: has tonifying effects). [Seedling] According to records: Lagenaria siceraria produces vines in the third lunar month, spreading over fences and roofs. Its leaves resemble those of the bottle gourd. In the fifth and sixth lunar months, it opens white flowers and bears fruit resembling melons but larger. When tender, those with a sweet taste can be eaten as vegetables, while bitter ones are inedible. After frost, they wither and can be harvested to make vessels. There is also a smaller variety named "Piao," which is essentially the bottle gourd. It also comes in sweet and bitter varieties; however, the seedlings and leaves are similar, differing only in the shape of the fruit. [Distribution] Grows everywhere. [Seasonality] (Growth) Seedlings emerge in spring; (Harvest) Fruits are collected in autumn. [Medicinal Part] Fruit. [Color] White. [Taste] Sweet. [Nature] Neutral. [Qi] Belongs to thin Qi, Yin within Yang. [Odor] Rotten.
Non-toxic. Clumped growth.
Stachys affinis (Ganluzi, 甘露子): Benefits the five Zang organs, directs Qi downward, and clears the spirit (modern interpretation: has tonifying effects). [Name] Dilu, Dicen. [Seedling] According to records: The stem of Stachys affinis is slightly over one chi high and square-shaped. Leaves grow opposite each other, hairy like mint. In the seventh and eighth lunar months, spikes form at the stem tips, opening purple flowers like Perilla frutescens var. acuta. Its root is the Stachys affinis itself. People commonly eat it as a vegetable, rarely using it medicinally. Due to its resemblance to silkworms, it is also called Dicen. [Distribution] Grows everywhere. [Seasonality] (Growth) Seedlings emerge in spring; (Harvest) Roots are collected in the tenth lunar month. [Medicinal Part] Root. [Texture] Resembles a silkworm. [Color] White. [Taste] Sweet. [Nature]
Plant-grown.
Agaricus bisporus (Mogu, 蘑菇): Can stir up Qi and cause illness; should not be consumed in excess (modern interpretation: has tonifying effects). [Seedling] According to records: Mushrooms belong to the fungus family. The sprouts are two to three cun high, hollow, light, and brittle. Their color is yellowish-white. They mostly grow in damp places during the fifth and sixth lunar months. Currently, they are added to various soups for consumption, offering a very fresh and delicious taste, but excessive intake is discouraged because they may stir up Qi and induce disease. [Distribution] Originates from Henan; now also found in northern regions. [Seasonality] (Growth) No fixed season; (Harvest) No fixed season. [Preservation] Sun-dried. [Color] Yellowish-white. [Taste] Sweet. [Nature] Cold. [Qi] Thin Qi, Yin within Yang. [Odor] Fragrant. [Antagonism] Alcohol. [Processing] When freshly picked, stir-fry with rice; if the rice turns black, it indicates toxicity, and ingestion will cause death. [Detoxification] For mushroom poisoning, grind raw Mung Bean (Lüdou, 绿豆) with water into a thick juice and drink it to resolve the toxicity immediately.
