Non-toxic.
Zhengbing (Steamed Wheat Cake) primarily functions to digest food, nourish the Spleen and Stomach, warm the Middle Jiao, resolve stagnation, benefit Qi, harmonize Blood, stop sweating, unblock the Sanjiao (Triple Burner), and promote water passage. (From *Bencao Gangmu* / *Compendium of Materia Medica*)
[Names] (Li Shizhen stated:)
According to research, (Liu Xi in *Shiming* said:) The character "Bing" (Cake/Bread) means "to combine," referring to kneading flour so that it merges together. There are types such as Zhengbing (Steamed Cake), Tangbing (Boiled Noodle/Cake), Hubing (Hu-style Flatbread), Suobing (Rope-shaped Noodle), and Subing (Butter-rich Bread), all named according to their shapes.
[Taste] Sweet.
[Nature] Neutral.
[Processing] (Li Shizhen stated:) There are many foods made from wheat flour, but Zhengbing has the most ancient origin. It is made from single-layer dough fermented with wine lees. It is required for making pills and can treat diseases, yet it is not recorded in classical Materia Medica texts, which is an omission. Only those steamed during the twelfth lunar month or on Cold Food Festival, peeled after the skin cracks, hung up to dry naturally, soaked in water until swollen when needed, pounded into a paste, and filtered, should be used. When combined with herbs regulating the Spleen/Stomach and Sanjiao, they are easily digested. Furthermore, the nature of the fermented flour has changed and does not aggravate damp-heat. Those filled with fruits, vegetables, or greasy substances are unsuitable for medicinal use.
[Treatments] (Therapeutic applications:)
Metrorrhagia and Metrorrhaxis: Burn aged Zhengbing to retain its carbonized essence (*Cunxing*), take 3 qian with rice decoction.
Night sweats and Spontaneous Sweating: Eat one piece of Zhengbing while slightly hungry before going to bed each night; it will cease within a few days.
All types of traumatic injuries and Shanghan (Cold Damage): Consume Zhengbing ground into powder, take 2 qian per dose with wine; highly effective.
Scalds and Burns: Burn Mantoubing (Steamed Bun) to retain its carbonized essence, grind into powder, mix with oil, and apply topically.
[Combination Therapies] (Prescription Applications) (Li Shizhen stated:)
According to research, (*Aizhu Tansou* records:) When Emperor Ningzong of Song was still a Prince, he suffered from Lin syndrome (Dysuria/Strangury), urinating three hundred times day and night. Imperial physicians were at a loss. Someone recommended Sun Lin for treatment. Sun Lin used Zhengbing, Garlic, and Dan Dou Chi (Prepared Soybean) mashed together to make pills, instructing the patient to take thirty pills with warm water. He said, "Take three doses today, and the illness should reduce by one-third; do the same tomorrow; the illness will be cured in three days." This indeed came true, and he was rewarded with a thousand strings of cash. When asked about the rationale, Sun Lin said, "How could a child suffer from Lin syndrome? It is merely due to obstructed water passages. These three substances can all unblock and promote flow. Only someone like Sun Lin can discuss medicine."
Chronic Hematochezia: Use Zhengbing from Cold Food Festival and Wulongwei (Oolong Tail) each 1 liang, plus seven stalks of Zaojiao (Gleditsia Sinensis Fruit) (peeled, roasted with butter). Grind into powder, refine honey to make pills, take 20 pills per dose with rice decoction.
Dysentery with Red and White Discharge: Caused by deficiency of Ying and Wei Qi, with Wind pathogen invading the intestines and stomach, leading to dysentery with red and white discharge, abdominal pain, tenesmus, thirst, distension, and anorexia. Use 2 liang of dried Zhengbing mixed with honey and stir-fried, and 4 liang of Yumiqiao (Poppy Shell) mixed with honey and stir-fried. Grind into powder, refine honey to make pills the size of Euphorbia seed (Qianzi). Take one pill per dose, decoct in one cup of water, and drink hot.
