Yinsha (Sound of sudden appearance)
La Chong (Wax Insect) [Appendix in Compendium of Materia Medica, under General Appendix of All Insects] [Geography] Pei Yuan recorded in *Guangzhou Ji*: In Linren County, there are beetles that crave foul-smelling meat. When a person dies, they consume the entire corpse. They swarm densely, filling the room, and cannot be driven away. [Substance] Zhang Hua recorded in *Bowuzhi*: In several counties southwest of Guangzhou, when people are about to die, flying insects appear, shaped like wheat grains, entering houses. After death, the body is inevitably eaten by them; it cannot be stopped until only residual bones remain, at which point they leave. [Solution] Using vessels made from Catalpa wood prevents these insects from coming. (*Linyi Guoji* records: In the southern border of Guangxi, La Chong eats only dead human flesh.)
Bao Pi Shui Hu (Leopard-skin Water Tiger) [Appendix in Compendium of Materia Medica, under Stream Ghost Insects] ○ (*Xiangmian Ji* records): In Zhonglu County, the Su River flows into the Mian River. There is an creature in the water resembling a three- or four-year-old child, with scales like a carp. Arrows cannot penetrate it. In autumn, it basks on sand; its knees resemble tiger paws, and its claws often remain submerged. When emerging from water, it exposes its knees to humans. If children play with it, it bites. If obtained at birth, removing its nose allows one to command it slightly; it is named "Shui Hu" (Water Tiger).
Gui Dan (Ghost Bullet) [Appendix in Compendium of Materia Medica, under Stream Ghost Insects] ○ (*Nanzhong Zhi* records): In Yongchang Commandery, there is a river called Jinshui, fordable only in November and December; during other months, it kills people. Its aura contains evil entities making sounds, though invisible. Those affected develop greenish, rotting skin lesions, named "Gui Dan".
Non-toxic. Baihua Cai (Flowering Cabbage) primarily directs rebellious Qi downward (Wang Ying). Decoction for external washing treats hemorrhoids; mashed application treats wind-damp bi pain; ground and taken with wine stops malaria (*Compendium of Materia Medica*). [Name] Yangjiao Cai (Horn-shaped Vegetable). [Seedling] (Li Shizhen said): Baihua Cai has soft stems that creep and spread, with five leaves per branch. Leaves are as large as a thumb. In autumn, small white flowers bloom with long stamens, forming small pods two to three cun long. The vegetable has a musky odor and is suitable only for salt pickling. (Wang Ying said): A yellow-flowered variety exists, named Huanghua Cai, identical in shape but with yellow flowers. [Season] Planted in March. [Substance] Seeds are black and fine, resembling fresh silkworm frass, lacking luster. [Contraindication] (Wang Ying said): Excessive consumption agitates Wind Qi, obstructs Zang-Fu organs, causes gastric fullness and discomfort, and damages the Spleen. [Odor] Musky. [Taste] Bitter, Pungent.
Non-toxic. Fanbaicao Gen (Root of Turnoverwort) treats hematemesis, hematochezia, metrorrhagia, malaria, and carbuncles/sores (*Compendium of Materia Medica*). [Name] Jitui Gen (Chicken Leg Root), Tian Ou (Heavenly Lotus Root). (Li Shizhen said): Fanbaicao is named "Jitui" due to leaf shape; "Tian Ou" is named after the root's taste. People in Chu call it "Hujitui"; people in Huai call it "Tianou". [Seedling] (Prince Zhou Xian said): Fanbaicao grows 7-8 cun tall. Leaves are hard, dense, serrated, and white on the back, similar to *Sanguisorba officinalis*. It bears yellow flowers. Roots are finger-thick, about 3 cun long, with red skin and white flesh, tapering at both ends. Suitable for raw or cooked consumption. [Geography] (Li Shizhen said): Jitui grows near wetlands and fields, not exceeding one chi in height. One stem bears three leaves, pointed, long, dense, wrinkled, and serrated. Pods resemble *Coriandrum sativum* seeds, containing finer seeds inside. [Season] Weak stems emerge in spring; small yellow flowers bloom in April. [Color] Leaf surface green, back white; root red, flesh white. [Substance] Root resembles small *Atractylodes macrocephala* head. Peel off red skin; interior is white like chicken meat, starchy when eaten. Children eat it raw; during famines, people dig it up to mix with rice. [Taste] Sweet, slightly bitter. [Nature] Neutral. [Treatment] For persistent hematemesis: Use 5-7 stalks of Fanbaicao, chop, decoct in 2 zhong of water to 1 zhong, take on an empty stomach. ○ For metrorrhagia and hematochezia: Use 1 liang of Hujitui Gen, crush, decoct in 2 zhan of wine to 1 zhan, take. ○ For malaria with chills and fever: Decoct 5-7 roots of Fanbaicao in wine and take. ○ For unnamed swelling/toxins and early-stage Ding toxic sores: Regardless of whether formed or not, use 10 stalks of Fanbaicao, decoct in wine, take until sweating occurs, then recover. ○ For generalized scabies and ulcerated sores: Collect Fanbaicao at noon on the Dragon Boat Festival (Duanwu Day), wash and store. Use one handful, decoct into strong water for fumigation and washing; effective.
