Xuan (Dispersing), regulating Qi.
Pungent, warm, aromatic, and penetrating; it ascends to enter the Spleen and Lung channels, and descends to unblock the Kidney channel. It can disperse rebellious Qi in the chest and abdomen.
It is applicable to all diseases related to Qi stagnation. When Qi flows smoothly, Wind disperses; therefore, it is used to treat Zhongqi (Jue-ni [sudden collapse with cold extremities], phlegm obstruction, locked jaw, hidden pulse, warm body—distinguished from Zhongfeng [stroke]; Zhongfeng presents with a warm body, while Zhongqi presents with a cold body; another view states that presence of phlegm indicates Zhongfeng, absence indicates Zhongqi. The *Ju Fang* also uses Wuyao Shunqi San for this condition. Xu Xueshi stated: Violent anger injures Yin, violent joy injures Yang, endless worry causes excessive Qi rebellion. Often, one contracts Zhongqi syndrome, which must not be treated as Zhongfeng), bladder cold Qi, frequent urination, regurgitation and vomiting, undigested food retention, diarrhea, dysentery, cholera, and blood stasis with Qi stagnation in women. For children's roundworms, and external conditions such as sores, boils, scabies, and leprosy (all resulting from inverted Blood and Qi), regulating Qi can also treat them. It cures various diseases in cats and dogs. Contraindicated in cases of Qi deficiency and Qi heat (Shizhen said: Simo Tang treats panting and urgency due to emotional depression, combining astringency with descending action, and purging with tonification. The formula uses Renshen, Wuyao, Chenxiang, and Binglang, each ground thickly to obtain 70% juice, then decocted together. Suoquan Wan uses Wuyao mixed with Yizhi in equal proportions, formed into pills, to treat frequent urination due to deficiency-cold, taking advantage of its ability to unblock the Yangming and Shaoyin channels).
Roots with wheel-spoke patterns or shaped like linked pearls are superior. Soak in wine overnight before use (some are used as powder).
Xuan (Dispersing), dispelling Wind-Damp, tonifying, strengthening sinews and bones.
Pungent flavor regulates Qi and transforms Phlegm; bitter flavor strengthens bones and benefits Essence; warm nature dispels Wind and overcomes Dampness. It drives out stagnant Blood in the skin and muscles, and treats spasm of sinews and bones (When the Kidney receives nourishment, abnormal water metabolism ceases and bones become strong; when the Liver receives nourishment, pathogenic Wind is expelled and sinews become strong).
It treats Wu Huan Xu Lei (flaccidity of sinews and vessels of the five Zang organs. The *Qianjin Fang* adds: Collect stems on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month, leaves on the 7th day of the 7th month, roots on the 9th day of the 9th month, grind into powder, to treat Wu Lao [five chronic exhaustion syndromes]). It treats impotence, damp scrotum, pruritus vulvae (caused by dampness generating parasites), weak legs in children, brightening the eyes, and healing sores. Brewing wine with it is particularly effective (Wang Lun said: Alcohol consumption in Wind diseases can generate Phlegm-Fire; only Acanthopanacis Cortex infused in wine benefits people).
The stem is green, nodes white, flowers red, bark yellow, root black, corresponding to the essence of the Five Chariots. Those that are fragrant and have five leaflets are preferred. Yuanzhi serves as the guiding herb. It is incompatible with Xuanshen.
