Ping Bu Gan Shen (Nourishing the Liver and Kidneys in a Mild Manner)
(Fu Pen Zi, Rubi Fructus) is sweet, sour, and slightly warm. It benefits the Kidney to secure essence, tonifies Liver deficiency to brighten the eyes, restores impotence, reduces urination (Kou Zhi stated: taking it should restore its urinary function, hence the name), moistens the skin and hair (applying the juice to hair prevents graying), and promotes pregnancy in women.
Mixed with honey into an ointment, it treats Lung Qi deficiency and cold (Li Shicai stated: strengthening the Kidney without the bias of dryness-heat, securing essence without the harm of coagulation and astringency, it is a precious item like gold and jade).
Its shape resembles an inverted basin, hence the name. Remove the pedicel, wash clean, pound into a cake, and steam with wine when used. Squeeze juice from the leaves and drip into the eyes to remove eye-lash worms, eliminate skin redness, absorb dampness, and stop tearing.
Ping Bu Gan Shen (Nourishing the Liver and Kidneys in a Mild Manner)
(Ji Li Zi, Tribuli Fructus) is bitter, pungent, and warm. It tonifies the Kidney, drains Lung Qi and disperses Liver wind, benefits essence and brightens the eyes (The Liver benefits from dispersion; therefore, all herbs that tonify the Liver can brighten the eyes).
It treats deficiency exhaustion with lower back pain, spermatorrhea and leukorrhea, coughing and reverse flow, lung abscess, breast obstruction, masses and fixed lumps, hemorrhoids and fistulas, Yin Tui (a condition involving testicular swelling or retraction), and diseases of the Kidney, Liver, and Lung meridians. It induces labor and aborts fetuses (Ci Ji Li primarily breaks up bad blood, thus it can break masses and expel the fetus).
Sha Yuan Ji Li (Tribulus Terrestris var. sphaerocarpus): Green and kidney-shaped (thus tonifying the Kidney). Use after stir-frying (can also be used as tea).
Ci Ji Li (Tribulus Terrestris): Triangular with spines. Remove spines, steam with wine (for wind-related conditions, Ci Ji Li is preferred; for tonifying the Kidney, Sha Yuan Ji Li is superior). Other functions are roughly the same (Rui Zhu Tang Fang: For loose teeth, burn the root of Ji Li to ash and apply externally).
Bu Pi, Sha Chong, Xiao Ji (Tonifying the Spleen, Killing Parasites, Resolving Accumulation)
(Shi Jun Zi, Quisqualis Fructus) is sweet and warm. It strengthens the Spleen and Stomach, clears deficiency heat, and kills intestinal parasites.
It treats five types of childhood malnutrition (Gan syndrome) with turbid urine, dysentery, sores, and tinea, serving as a key herb for various childhood diseases (Jing Shu stated: Five types of Gan syndrome with turbid urine, dysentery, and abdominal parasites are all caused by Spleen and Stomach weakness, leading to milk stagnation, food retention, and damp-heat obstruction. When the Spleen and Stomach are strong, accumulation dissipates, damp-heat scatters, water passages become clear, and all preceding symptoms are eliminated. Lizhen said: Herbs that kill parasites are mostly bitter and pungent, but Shi Jun Zi and Fei Zi are sweet and yet kill parasites. In the first ten days of the lunar month, parasite heads point upward; in the middle ten days, they lie horizontally; in the last ten days, they point downward. Dao Zang states: From the 1st to the 5th day, parasite heads point upward. For those with parasitic disease, eating several fruits on an empty stomach during the first ten days of the lunar month will cause all parasites to die and exit. Note: Di Huang and Hu Ma also kill parasites).
Originating from Min and Shu regions, it has five segments with [missing character], and the kernel inside resembles Fei Zi. It can also be roasted and eaten; if kept too long, it becomes oily and unusable. Avoid drinking hot tea after consumption, as doing so causes diarrhea.
