To drain the Lung and descend fire.
Bitter, neutral in nature. Clears the Lung, harmonizes the Stomach, and descends Qi; when Qi descends, fire subsides and phlegm dissipates (excess Qi generates fire, and fire generates phlegm). Indicated for heat-type cough, vomiting/reversal of Qi, and thirst. (Shizhen said: When fire subsides and phlegm flows smoothly, reversal ceases, vomiting stops, coughing halts, and thirst is quenched. A woman suffered from chronic cough due to Lung heat, her body felt as hot as a furnace, and she was emaciated, bordering on consumption. Equal parts of Piyepian (Loquat Leaf), Kuandonghua (Fritillaria Flower), Ziwan (Aster Root), Xingren (Apricot Seed), Sangbaipi (Mulberry Bark), Mutong (Akebia Stem), with half the amount of Dahuang (Rhubarb), were made into honey pills the size of cherries. One pill was held in the mouth after meals and before sleep until cured, without finishing the course). Leaves weigh one tael when moist and three qian when dry, indicating sufficient Qi potency. The downy hairs must be wiped off (hairs irritate the Lung, causing cough). For Stomach disorders, stir-fry with ginger juice; for Lung disorders, stir-fry with honey.
Disperses, clears the Lung.
Sweet, astringent, warm in nature. The fruit of the Lung and Stomach meridians, it clears the throat, generates fluids, relieves restlessness, resolves alcohol intoxication, and detoxifies pufferfish poison (boiling with it is effective) and fish bone impaction (if no olive is available, grind the olive pit into water and drink. Olive wood can make oars; fish flip up immediately, demonstrating how substances mutually restrain each other).
The seed, burned to ash, applied externally is excellent for treating zhu-gan (chronic wasting conditions and malnutrition in children).
Also known as Yinxing (Ginkgo Nut).
Astringent, astringes the Lung, removes phlegm turbidity.
Sweet, bitter, warm in nature. Its nature is astringent and convergent. Cooked food warms the Lung and benefits Qi (its white color corresponds to Metal, thus entering the Lung meridian), stabilizes phlegmatic asthma, astringes wheezing and cough, reduces urination frequency, and stops leukorrhea turbidity. Raw food reduces phlegm, resolves alcohol toxicity, and eliminates parasites/toxins (flowers open at night, unseen by humans, possessing Yin nature and slight toxicity, thus capable of eliminating toxins and killing parasites). Excessive consumption leads to excessive astringency, causing Qi stagnation and abdominal distension; in children, it may induce convulsions or gan syndrome (consuming 1000 nuts causes death).
The pulp/juice moisturizes hands and face, and cleans grease (Shizhen said: its ability to remove phlegm turbidity can be inferred analogously).
Astringes the Intestines, used externally for dyeing hair.
Sour, astringent, warm in nature. It astringes the intestines, stops diarrhea/dysentery and bloody stool (take as powder), metrorrhagia/metrostaxis, leukorrhea, and rectal prolapse (for rectal prolapse caused by severe diarrhea/dysentery, decoct Shiliupi (Pomegranate Rind), Chenbitu (Old Wall Soil), and a small amount of Mingfan (Alum) strongly, fumigate and wash the area, then apply fried and powdered Wubeizi (Chinese Gall) to support and stop it). Soaked in water, the juice is black as ink, used to darken beard/hair, often mixed with Lüyun You (Green Cloud Oil). Do not contact iron vessels (Kuzu Xinwen records: A man suffered from abdominal distension. Xia Cheng diagnosed: Normal diet indicates it is not edema or gu-distension, but damp-heat generating worms. He prescribed Shiliu (Pomegranate), Chunshu Dongyin Genpi (Eastern-root bark of Toona sinensis), and Binglang (Betel Nut), each 5 qian, taken on an empty stomach. Severe abdominal pain followed, expelling worms over ten zhang long, and he recovered).
