Purgative, clears blood heat.
Bitter, neutral in nature. Treats intestinal wind with bloody stool, five types of hemorrhoids (burned to ash, applied with oil; taken with water is also good), and genital swelling. Dripped into the ear, it treats deafness. Gallbladder bile applied to the eyes treats wind-eye following smallpox. It resembles a mouse but is rounder and larger, brownish in color, with clustered fur and external spines like a chestnut burr. Use the charred form (blackened but retaining its nature).
Also known as Mingyue Sha (Moonlight Sand).
Dispersing, brightens the eyes, kills parasites.
Kills parasites and brightens the eyes; treats consumptive disease (Lao Zhai) and five types of childhood malnutrition (Gan Ji), and corneal opacity (Yi) following smallpox.
Rabbit liver clears liver heat, thus it can brighten the eyes.
Rabbit meat treats Xiao Ke (wasting-thirst syndrome). (*Hai Shang Fang*: Clarify the juice and drink it after freezing.) Eating rabbit meat makes chickenpox/varicella rare in children (Tao Hongjing said: If a pregnant woman eats it, the child may be born with a cleft lip. The Rabbit Blood Pills from Baoshou Hall prevent children from ever getting smallpox, or if they do, it will be very mild. On the eighth day of the twelfth lunar month, obtain fresh rabbit blood by piercing, mix with buckwheat flour, add 4-5 fen of Realgar Xionghuang, and make pills the size of mung beans. For newborns, administer 2-3 pills with breast milk; red spots will appear all over the body, which serves as verification.).
Dispersing, harmonizes Yin and Yang.
Sweet, slightly cold. Treats fever relapsing due to overexertion after recovery from Cold Damage (Shang Han), and abdominal pain in men suffering from Yin Yi (when a woman recovers from Cold Damage and engages in intercourse immediately, the pathogenic toxin attacks the man, termed Yin Yi; if a woman contracts the toxin from a man with Cold Damage, it is termed Yang Yi. *Huo Ren* contains Shu Shi Tang). Those with pointed ends are male rat feces.
Rat gallbladder brightens the eyes. Juice dripped into the ear treats chronic deafness lasting twenty years (Tao Hongjing said: Rat gallbladder dissolves immediately upon the death of the rat, making it difficult to obtain).
Rat meat treats pediatric Gan accumulation causing scrofula (Hejian said: Rats are good at burrowing; treating sores and scrofula utilizes this characteristic).
Astringent, purgative, consolidates intestines, calms fright.
Sweet, astringent, slightly cold. Enters the Hand-Shaoyin (Heart), Foot-Shaoyin (Kidney), Hand-Yangming (Large Intestine), and Foot-Jueyin (Liver) meridians. It can consolidate floating and erratic Zheng Qi (Upright Qi), astringe the intestines and benefit the kidneys, calm the soul and calm fright, dispel evil and detoxify. Treats frequent dreaming, convulsive epilepsy, malaria and dysentery, hematemesis, epistaxis, metrorrhagia, leukorrhea, seminal emission, and rectal prolapse. Promotes urination and defecation for both large and small intestines, secures essence and stops sweating, stabilizes asthma (asthma occurs when Qi does not return to its origin), and heals sores. All these actions rely on the principle that astringents stop leakage and prolapse (*Shi Ji* states: Astringents can remove leakage. Oyster Shell Muli and Dragon Bone Longgu are examples). Those with white brocade-like patterns on the surface and which stick to the tongue when licked are of good quality (some people counterfeit them with ancient mine ash). Soak in wine overnight, process by water levigation three times before use; or boil in wine, roast with butter, or calcine. Some are used raw. Another method says to water levigate, dry, and steam with black soybeans (otherwise it adheres to the stomach and intestines, causing heat in later years). Avoid fish and iron. Incompatible with Gypsum Shigao and Sichuan Pepper Chuanjiao. Harmonizes well with Ginseng Renshen and Calculus Bovis Niuhuang (Xu Hong said: Calculus Bovis dislikes Dragon Bone, but Dragon Bone works better with Calculus Bovis because it helps to subdue and control it).
