Dispersing, dispelling wind.
Acrid, sweet, and toxic. Its color is green, corresponding to the Wood element; therefore, it treats various wind-induced dizziness and tremors (all attributed to Liver Wood pathology), convulsions, epilepsy, spasms, and deviation of the mouth and eye (equal parts of Bai Fu Zi [Aconiti Kusnezoffii Rhizoma], Jiang Can [Bombyx Batryticatus], and Quan Xie [Scorpio] are ground into powder, named Qian Zheng San. Taken with wine, two qian, it is highly effective), malaria, wind-toxin sores, deafness, hernia, and diseases of the Jueyin Wind-Wood channel (Li Dongyuan stated: All hernias and leukorrhea belong to wind. Quan Xie is an essential herb for treating wind and should be added in all such cases. Wang Ji stated: For broken-wind disease [tetanus], Quan Xie and Fang Feng [Saposhnikoviae Radix] should be the main herbs). It is contraindicated in stroke-like syndromes and slow spleen convulsions that are due to deficiency. Use the whole scorpion, remove the legs, roast, or use only the tail, which has particularly potent action. Those that are tight and small are of good quality (if stung by a scorpion, applying snail mucus provides relief).
Dispersing, dispelling wind.
Acrid, warm, and toxic. Enters the Jueyin Liver channel. It is adept at penetrating and dispersing, treating umbilical wind with mouth contraction (roasted, ground into powder, mixed with pig milk for administration), convulsions, epilepsy, scrofula, snake-related disorders (can subdue snake venom), and nail sores (fleshy overgrowth under toenails, commonly known as chicken eyes; powdered centipede applied topically, with the surrounding area treated with Nan Xing [Arisaematis Rhizoma] powder mixed with vinegar), killing parasites (ancient prescriptions for cough often used it raw), and inducing abortion. Select those with red feet and black heads, roast over fire, remove head, legs, tail, and exoskeleton, wrap in lotus leaf and roast on coals, or process with wine. It fears spiders, slugs (it dares not cross paths where they have walked; contact causes death), chicken manure, mulberry bark, and salt (for poisoning, apply mulberry juice, salt, and garlic; if bitten, place a captured spider on the bite site; the spider will absorb the toxin, die, and upon being placed in water, will expel the toxin and revive).
This refers to the toad.
Draining excess, treating malnutrition syndromes (Gan disease), drawing out toxins.
The toad is the essence of earth responding to the moon's spirit. Acrid, cool, and slightly toxic. Enters the Yangming Stomach channel. Promotes sweating and reduces fever, removes dampness and kills parasites, treats carbuncles and back sores (if unruptured, tie a live toad to the sore. After half a day, the toad will become lethargic; place it in water to save its life. Replace with another one; after three changes, the toxin dissipates. In severe cases, split the toad and apply it to the sore; it will soon become foul-smelling. Repeat this two or three times, and the swelling will heal itself), and childhood wasting-malnutrition syndromes.
Chan Su (Toad Venom) is acrid, warm, and highly toxic. Assists Yang Qi, treats carbuncles and back sores, and childhood Gan disease affecting the brain (this is the white juice from between the toad's eyebrows, which can erode human muscle; it is taken internally with other herbs in minute doses of 1-2 li only for Ding sores or Gan disease, utilizing the principle of using toxicity to combat toxicity. For brain Gan disease, mix with breast milk and drip into the nose. Widely used in surgery. Toad fat applied to jade allows carving like wax. "Fang" sounds like "fang," meaning fat/lard).
