[Da Fu Pi (Areca Peel)]
[Harm] Its nature and properties are similar to Betel Nut (Binlang). For patients with any degree of deficiency, it should generally not be used.
[Benefit] Pungent and slightly warm; it drains spleen qi downward, expands the chest and promotes water metabolism, unblocks the large and small intestines, and treats edema, Hong Kong foot (a condition characterized by swelling and pain in the feet), fullness and distension, phlegm obstruction in the chest and diaphragm, and malarial fevers.
[Processing] Remove the seeds and wash clean; it resembles velvet. If using the seeds, modern pharmacies often pass them off as Betel Nut for medicinal use. Sun Simiao said: "Vulture birds often perch on Betel Nut trees. When using Betel Nut, Da Fu Zi (Areca Seed), or Da Fu Pi, one should first wash with wine, then wash again with soybean juice, dry in the shade, roast in ashes until charred, slice, and use."
[Nong Mu (Magnolia Bark)]
[Harm] Pungent and warm, with a strong heating nature. Its action is specialized in digestion and guiding out stagnation; it scatters without retaining, depletes the body's primordial qi, and has no tonifying effect. Therefore, vomiting not caused by cold-phlegm or cold accumulation, but due to stomach deficiency with flaming fire qi rising; abdominal pain due to blood deficiency and insufficient spleen yin, rather than stagnation; diarrhea due to sudden violent heat, rather than cold accumulation injuring the cold; abdominal fullness due to insufficiency of middle qi with qi failing to return to its source, rather than excess qi stagnation; stroke due to yin deficiency with flaming fire causing sudden collapse and rigidity, rather than true wind-stroke from the northwest; fever and headache from contracting cold pathogens without symptoms of cold fullness and distension; infants suffering from vomiting and diarrhea of milk and food, about to develop slow convulsions; adults with qi deficiency and dried blood progressing to esophageal obstruction (Ge Zheng); elderly people with spleen deficiency unable to transform and transport, occasionally having stagnation; pregnant women with morning sickness unable to keep down food and water; pregnant women with fetal qi rising causing dizziness and vertigo; pregnant women with food stagnation and cold retention; pregnant women with abdominal pain, diarrhea, and dysentery; pregnant women with cold damage or wind strike; postpartum women with blood deficiency and abdominal pain; postpartum women with middle jiao fullness and wheezing; postpartum women with diarrhea and regurgitation—all these conditions are strictly contraindicated according to medical principles. If mistakenly administered, mild diseases become severe, and severe diseases become critical. Without investigating the root cause and abusing it indiscriminately, although harm may not be immediately visible, the pure and harmonious qi is silently consumed. Pregnant women taking it severely damages the fetal origin; can one not be cautious? It is incompatible with Niter (Xiaoshi) and Alisma (Zexie), and avoids beans.
[Benefit] Bitter and descending can purge excess fullness; pungent and warm can scatter dampness-induced fullness. Enters the Spleen and Stomach meridians; it calms stomach qi, regulates the middle, resolves phlegm, transforms food, moves stagnant water, breaks old blood, disperses wind-cold, regulates the chest and abdomen to relieve pain, kills intestinal parasites, treats regurgitation, vomiting, reverse flow, wheezing, cough, diarrhea, and cold pain. It is the primary herb for these conditions, representing the method of "scattering what is knotted." Dried Ginger (Ganjiang) serves as an assistant herb.
[Processing] Harvest in the seventh and eighth months when the taste is sweet and pleasant. Take the bark, dry in the shade, stir-fry with ginger juice, scrape off the rough outer skin, stir-fry or roast with fresh ginger juice, or soak and stir-fry before use.
It tastes bitter. If not processed with ginger, it will irritate the throat and tongue. The variety from Longzhou in Zizhou is superior; the bark is extremely scaly and wrinkled, purplish, moist, and pungent in taste, which is good. Thin and white bark is unsuitable for medicinal use.
