[Harm] Those that are red can be fatal; carefully select and remove them for use. Apart from killing parasites, it has no other merits, and it can cause impotence (Yin Wei).
[Benefit] Bitter and cold in nature, entering the Stomach (Wei) and Large Intestine (Da Chang) meridians. It kills various parasites in the Zang-Fu organs, cures myriad diseases in infants, and is suitable for those with parasites.
[Processing] It grows from the residual Qi of bamboo, born of thunderbolts, hence its name. The size is like a chestnut. Scrape off the black skin with a bamboo knife, soak overnight in Licorice Root (Gancao) water, mix with wine, then steam or stir-fry with sand (Pao).

[Harm] For headache and eye pain not caused by Wind pathogen (Feng Xie), it is contraindicated for those with Blood deficiency and internal Fire. Persons with deficient Stomach should not take it, fearing the generation of Phlegm diseases.
[Benefit] Bitter, pungent, and neutral in nature, entering the Stomach, Liver, Gallbladder, and Bladder meridians. It searches out Head Wind (Tou Feng) and removes Damp-Bi syndrome.
[Processing] Harvest the seeds in the sixth, seventh, and eighth months. Remove the stem and one layer of white membrane beneath the seed. Soak in wine for one Shichen (two hours), steam for three Shichen (six hours), and simmer until dry for use. Ordinarily, only the membrane is removed, and it is crushed before use.

[Harm] In Cold Damage (Shang Han) with headache, accompanied by stiffness of the neck, lower back, and spine pain, and body-wide bone ache, this is Taiyang disease (Tai Yang Bing). Since the pathogen has not entered the Yangming stage, there is no thirst symptom, and it should not be taken. Misuse will cause the pathogenic Qi to be drawn into the Yangming stage, akin to inviting thieves into the house. If macules and rashes have already appeared as red spots, it should not be used, fearing that exterior deficiency will worsen the rash erosion. For individuals with Five Exhaustions and Seven Injuries (Wu Lao Qi Shang), characterized by upper excess and lower deficiency, even if they have Spleen-Stomach diseases during the summer month, it is not suitable to take it. If it must be used, the dosage should be small; excessive use will damage Stomach Qi because its ascending and dispersing action is too strong. It is especially contraindicated in summer when exterior deficiency leads to profuse sweating.
Kudzu Root (Gegen) is a Wind drug. All Wind drugs are drying. The *Ben Jing* states it generates fluids and stops thirst; "Sheng" (generate) is likely a scribal error for "Sheng" (ascend). It is not that Gegen alone can stop thirst, but rather that by ascending Stomach Qi into the Lungs, it can generate fluids. If it is not a case of sinking of Clear Yang with thirst due to flaming Fire consuming fluids, misusing this drug will allow Fire to borrow the power of Wind, spreading uncontrollably like a prairie fire. Even if it is not a pattern of Yin deficiency with flaming Fire, for any case of thirst due to insufficient Stomach Fluids, it should also be contraindicated.
Preface to Zhang Sinong's *Complete Book on Treating Summerheat* states: "Chai Hu depletes Liver Yin, Gegen exhausts Stomach Juice." These two sentences can be said to enlighten the masses for millennia. Therefore, it is stated by predecessors that it should not be used when there is profuse sweating. It should also not be used when there is no sweating.
I believe the Yangming Stomach Meridian is a place abundant in Blood. In Fire diseases with dryness and heat, without sweating, irritability, and thirst, Stomach fluids are already damaged. Sweat is transformed from blood; the warning "taking away sweat means taking away blood" should be considered by users.
[Benefit] Sweet, pungent, and neutral in nature, entering the Stomach and Large Intestine meridians. It lightly disseminates and releases the muscle layer, induces sweating, and raises Yang. Raw use can induce abortion; steamed and cooked, it dissipates constrained Fire, transforms Alcohol toxicity (Jiu Du), and stops bloody dysentery. It can dance Stomach Qi upward, making it a sacred medicine for treating deficiency-type diarrhea.
Fresh Kudzu Root juice is very cold, treating Heat and Fire in Warm Diseases (Wen Bing), vomiting blood, and epistaxis.
Kudzu Flower (Ge Hua) is excellent for resolving Alcohol toxicity, which is poison arising from severe dampness of alcohol toxicity.
Kudzu Shell (i.e., seed) is sweet and neutral. Treats dysentery and resolves Alcohol toxicity. Leaves stop bleeding from metal wounds. Vines reduce carbuncles and swelling and relieve throat Bi (Hou Bi).
[Processing] Harvest roots in the fifth month and dry them in the sun. Use raw or steamed hot; those dug deep from the earth are best. Nowadays, many people consume it as powder. Harvest flowers in the seventh month and dry them in the sun. Harvest seeds in the eighth and ninth months and dry them in the sun. In winter, dig up fresh roots, crush them, put them in water, knead to extract and settle the starch, named Yulu Frost (Jade Dew Frost).
