[Fuling Shen]
[Harm] Its efficacy is specialized in promoting urination and attacking Kidney Qi. For patients with Kidney deficiency, if there is spontaneous diuresis or incontinence, seminal emission and slipping due to deficiency-cold, or difficulty in urination due to Yin depletion, it should not be administered recklessly. The part of Fuling containing red fibers, if mistakenly taken, causes the pupils to shrink, black spots on the cornea, accompanied by blurred vision or blindness. Fuling is incompatible with Bai Lian (Bletillae Rhizoma), fears Di Yu (Sanguisorbae Radix), Qin Jiao (Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix), and Bie Jia (Trionycis Carapax), and is contraindicated with rice vinegar, acidic foods, Xiong Huang (Realgar), etc. Ma Lin (Iris lactea) serves as a guiding herb.
[Benefit] It tastes sweet and bland and is neutral in nature; its therapeutic action is similar to that of Fuling. It is mostly used to enter the Heart meridian, communicating between the Heart and Kidney to calm the mind, stabilize willpower, open the orifices, and enhance intelligence. It treats palpitations and fright due to Heart deficiency, irritability, and forgetfulness.
[Processing] Crush into fine powder, stir in a basin of water, filter off floating impurities, dry in the shade, and slice for use. It must be harvested in the second or eighth lunar month and dried in the shade. When used, the central woody core must be removed. To calm the mind, it can be mixed with Chen Sha (Cinnabar).
According to the *Shennong Bencao Jing*, only Fuling is mentioned; the *Mingyi Bielu* begins to distinguish Fushen. Fushen acts to guard (secure the Spirit), whereas Fuling acts to drain downward (promote urination). White Fuling enters the Qi level of the Lung and Bladder; red Fuling enters the Blood level of the Heart and Small Intestine.
Fuling Mu (the woody core of Fuling), also known as Huang Song Jie (Yellow Pine Joint), is the center of Fushen. Song Jie San (Pine Joint Powder) and Ruxiang Mugua Tang (Frankincense and Papaya Decoction) treat various tendon spasms and pain. Ruxiang (Boswelliae Resina) extends the tendons, and Mugua (Chaenomelis Fructus) soothes them.
The woody core of Fushen calms the Heart Spirit and treats various tendon spasms, hemiplegia with facial deviation, heart palpitations, and forgetfulness.
[Zhu Xin Xue]
[Harm] The qi of fright from slaughter enters the Heart, and upon death, the qi returns to the Liver; neither should be consumed in excess.
[Benefit] It is used as a guide for Heart-nourishing herbs, taking the meaning of "using the Heart to return to the Heart, and using blood to guide blood."
[Processing] Use a bamboo knife to剖 open the pig's Heart, extract the blood, and stir-fry it with Heart-nourishing herbs such as Danshen (Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix).
[Hupo]
[Harm] Its bland and draining nature damages Yin. Patients with Yin deficiency and internal heat, or fire flaring with depleted water, should not take it. If a patient has scant blood causing difficulty in urination, taking it may instead cause suffering from dryness and urgency.
[Benefit] It tastes sweet and is neutral, entering the Heart, Liver, Lung, and Bladder meridians. It calms the mind so that evil spirits cannot invade. Its red color enters the Blood level, thus it can resolve blood stasis, break up masses and accumulations, and generate flesh. It clears the Lung and promotes urination. Its sweet and bland nature ascends first, allowing Lung Qi to descend, thereby unblocking the Bladder; hence, it treats the five types of strangury. It also disperses blood stasis, generates new blood, removes ocular nebulae, and brightens the eyes. The classics state: "The Spleen scatters essence, which ascends to the Lung; the Lung regulates water passages, transmitting them downward to the Bladder." All bland-draining herbs ascend first and then descend. Hupo is a treasure formed from pine resin buried in the earth for years; thus, it can unblock obstructions to calm the Heart and settle the Soul, relying on its function of drying dampness and strengthening the Spleen Earth.
[Processing] Pine resin buried in the earth for many years forms it. It can also form when submerged in water. Authenticity is verified if it adheres to mustard seeds after being warmed by rubbing with the palm of the hand. Preparation involves boiling Baizi Ren (Platycladi Semen) in a clay pot for half a day, then grinding into powder.
