[Shechuangzi (Cnidii Fructus)]
The flavor is bitter and acrid, and it is non-toxic. It primarily treats impotence with dampness and itching in the male genitalia, swelling and pain in the female genitalia, removes bi-syndrome (obstruction) qi, benefits the joints, treats epilepsy, and malignant sores. Long-term consumption makes the body light and improves complexion. (Note: Acrid; ancient texts erroneously recorded it as neutral, now corrected.)
(Shechuangzi was named "Shesu" or "Shemi" in the *Shennong Bencao Jing* [Classic of Materia Medica]. It is called "Huihuang" in the *Erya*, because vipers like to lie beneath it and are fond of eating its seeds, hence the name. It originally grew in the valleys of Linliu and wet fields, but is now found everywhere. Seedlings emerge in the third lunar month, growing two or three chi high. The leaves are green, finely divided, and grow in clumps resembling mugwort... )
Shechuangzi has a bitter and acrid flavor and a warm nature, inheriting the Qi of Shaoyin Junfire (Ministerial Fire). It treats impotence with dampness and itching in the male genitalia, and swelling and pain in the female genitalia, by inheriting fire Qi to descend and relieve yin cold. It removes bi-syndrome qi and benefits the joints by inheriting fire Qi to unblock the meridians externally. When Heart Qi is deficient and cold pathogens are abundant, epilepsy occurs; when Heart Qi is deficient and heat pathogens are abundant, malignant sores arise. Shechuangzi is bitter in flavor and warm in nature, capable of assisting Heart Qi, thus treating epilepsy and malignant sores. Long-term consumption generates a mutual generation between fire and earth, making the body light. With abundant Heart Qi, the complexion becomes good.
Snakes belong to the Yin category. Shechuangzi is warm in nature; vipers like to lie within it and eat its seeds, just as mountain deer crave water turtles, and hidden dragons crave flying swallows...
Li Shizhen stated: Shechuangzi is listed among the superior grade in the *Shennong Bencao Jing*. It not only benefits men but also women. However, people discard this herb and seek tonics elsewhere...
[Fupenzi (Rubiae Fructus)]
The flavor is sour and neutral, and it is non-toxic. It primarily calms and nourishes the five Zang organs, supplements Essence and Qi, promotes the growth of the Yin organ (penis), ensures firmness, strengthens willpower, doubles physical strength, and aids fertility. Long-term consumption makes the body light and delays aging.
(It is named "Fupan" in the *Mingyi Bielu* [Additional Records of Famous Physicians]. It is named "Penglei" in the *Shennong Bencao Jing*. It originally grew in the plains and marshes of Jingshan and Yuanju, but is now found everywhere. Vines proliferate, stems...)
Penglei... In recent times, people only know of Fupenzi and do not know of Penglei. I believe that Fupenzi and Penglei have identical functions, so I combine them into one entry.)
The *Shennong Bencao Jing* names it "Penglei" because its vines proliferate, its seedlings and leaves do not wither, and its fruits appear lush and plump. The *Mingyi Bielu* names it "Fupan" because its shape is round and flat, like a cauldron or basin, bearing fruit near the stem, hanging downward, exactly like an inverted basin. Its flavor is sour and neutral. With proliferating vines, it possesses the Qi of spring birth and summer growth, hanging down like a basin. It inherits the Metal Qi of autumn, and its winter leaves do not wither. It inherits the Water Essence of winter, and its fruits are round. It possesses the Earth Qi of the center, its form embodies the four seasons, and its substance conforms to the Five Phases, thus primarily treating the calming and nourishing of the five Zang organs. The Kidneys receive the Essence of the five Zang organs and store it, thus supplementing Essence and Qi and promoting the growth of the Yin organ. When Kidney Qi is sufficient, it ensures firmness, strengthens willpower, doubles physical strength, and aids fertility. This is because although Fupenzi calms and nourishes the five Zang organs, it mostly tonifies the Kidneys. The reason for this is that the Qi of Heaven and Water interacts...
