Action: Promote urination to drain heat, leach out dampness to relieve strangury. When combined with Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu), it excellently eliminates fluid retention and calms vertigo. When incorporated into Liuwei Dihuang Wan, tonification and purgation support each other.
Li Shizhen stated: Alisma Orientale (Zexie) promotes urination and drains downward. When damp-heat exists in the Spleen and Stomach, the head feels heavy, vision is blurred, and tinnitus occurs. Alisma leaches out the dampness, so the heat follows and departs; thus, Earth Qi functions properly, clear Yang ascends, making the person feel bright and refreshed. Therefore, it has the merit of treating vertigo and improving hearing and vision. However, long-term use causes excessive descending action, preventing clear Yang from ascending, secretly consuming True Yin, leading inevitably to blurred vision.
Alisma excels at draining; ancient claims that it tonifies deficiency are erroneous. Bian Que's assertion that it harms the eyes is accurate. For patients without dampness, or with Kidney deficiency causing seminal emission and blurred vision due to deficiency, do not prescribe it lightly.
