Tiger Bone (Hugu), pungent in flavor, slightly warm in nature, non-toxic. All bones can be used, but the tibia (lower leg bone) is the best. It treats wind-bi syndrome (painful obstruction caused by wind), relieves knee soreness and weakness, expels evil zhu (pestilential diseases), and stops palpitations in the upper jiao (upper burner).
Tiger Eye (Huqing), can stabilize the hun and po (ethereal and corporeal souls).
Tiger Meat (Hurou), enhances physical strength; its effect on stopping nausea and vomiting is particularly effective.
Tiger Fat (Huzhi), when applied to hair, promotes regrowth; there is no need to use leopard fat.
Note: Tiger bones can all dispel wind and strengthen walking; it is not necessary to use only the tibia. However, using the tibia is superior. This is not because the tibia is better at dispelling wind or strengthening walking, but because the tiger is the essence of extreme yin, which can most effectively tonify Lung Metal and generate qi and strength. The tiger belongs to Metal, and the Lung also belongs to Metal; due to the resonance of similar energies, tonifying the Lung has profound rationale. Using Tiger Bone within formulas for tonifying Yin can originally generate essence and add marrow. The tibia is particularly unique because the tiger's full power resides in the tibia, obtaining especially the rigid Qi of Metal.
Some doubt that Tiger Bone is not a medicine for strengthening sinews and bones, suggesting it is inferior to Tiger Eye for stabilizing the soul. In fact, Tiger Bone strengthens bones but not sinews, while Tiger Eye stabilizes the po but does not calm the hun; they should not be confused. The tiger's power originates from its bones; using Tiger Bone to supplement human weak bones leaves no room for doubt. The tiger belongs to Metal, and the human po also belongs to Metal; using Metal Qi to settle Metal Qi, what is there to doubt? However, these two items are completely ineffective when used alone. They must be used within formulas for tonifying Qi and Essence to achieve results. It is not that Tiger Bone cannot strengthen bones or Tiger Eye cannot stabilize the po.
There is also a method of preparing Tiger Stomach as the chief ingredient, which treats dysphagia (difficulty swallowing) miraculously, with repeated trials recorded in detail.
Qingpi (Green Tangerine Peel), Chenpi (Aged Tangerine Peel), Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome), Xiangfu (Cyperus Rotundus Rhizome), Nanxing (Arisaema Cum Bile), Banxia (Pinellia Tuber), Sharen (Amomum Villosum Fruit), Dafupi (Areca Peel), Wulingzhi (Trogopterus Dung), Houpo (Magnolia Bark), Fuling (Poria), Suxing (Perilla Seed), Baijiezi (Brassica Seed), Zaojiao (Gleditsia Sinensis Fruit), Shenqu (Medicated Leaven), Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizome), Zhike (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum), Dangguishen (Angelica Sinensis Radix Body), Maidong (Ophiopogon Japonicus Tuber), Sangbaipi (Morus Alba Root Bark), Jiegeng (Platycodon Grandiflorus Radix), Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix), each 1 liang; Chenxiang (Aquilaria Lignum Resinatum), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Huoxiang (Agastaches Herba), Wuweizi (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus), each 5 qian; Dingxiang (Eugeniae Caryophyllata Flos), Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), each 3 qian; Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) 2 qian; Binglang (Arecae Semen) 1 piece. Grind all into fine powder. Take one fresh Tiger Stomach, remove internal impurities, do not wash with water, clean with aged rice wine, soak in good rice wine lees for three days, discard the lees, place the Tiger Stomach between two new clay tiles, bake slowly over gentle fire until dry. Mix with the above powder, pound thousands of times, bind with Shenqu paste into pills the size of Sophora seeds. Take 30 pills per dose, decoct 5 fen of Radish Seed and 5 fen of Malt, take with the decoction. This formula is named Tuduw Wan (Tiger Stomach Pill), specifically treating dysphagia and regurgitation. Most herbs here move Qi, which may be too rapid and sharp. However, dysphagia is caused by phlegm stagnation in the chest and diaphragm, which this formula can open. The brilliance lies in taking only 30 pills per dose, a small amount, ensuring rapid opening of orifices without damaging Yuan Qi. As the saying goes, take this medicine when you have this disease. If the dysphagia is cured after taking it, immediately switch to major Qi and Blood tonics, and absolutely do not continue taking this pill. This formula was obtained from Mr. Ye, Administrator in Fujian. Mr. Ye suffered from dysphagia due to aging and weakness; people said Tiger Stomach Pill could cure it, and he recovered after taking it. Thus, he had the formula carved and transmitted, explaining the reason. When my brother and I first made this pill, our teacher's mother, Mrs. Yu, who had long suffered from dysphagia, took it and recovered quickly. A neighbor, a woman in her forties who developed dysphagia qi after losing her son, was given this pill; her illness ceased, and she subsequently became pregnant and gave birth to a son. Later, an elderly woman in my family also suffered from this condition, but the medicine was exhausted. While sunning books during the Sanfu period, we found about two qian of pills in a hat compartment. She took half, and then recovered. My family member Meng distributed this pill for thirty years without fail in its miraculous efficacy. I dare to append this discussion to preserve it permanently. (Recorded by Jin Xiaoqi.)
Furthermore, Tiger Buttock Marrow is used in pills to strengthen Yang and benefit Essence, preventing black hair from turning white and restoring white hair to black. It is named Ziyin Baibu Wan (Nourishing Yin Hundred Tonics Pill).
Da Huai Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata) 8 liang, soaked thoroughly in pure wine until soft. Place in a clay pot with a willow branch steamer insert, spread Shengdi on top, add water and wine below, steam for the duration of one incense stick, take out and dry. Repeat soaking, steaming, and drying nine times. Baiyun Ling (Poria) peel removed, white flesh taken, washed with water to remove red fibrous foam, dried. The floating juice is mixed to form cakes, dried in shade, 3 liang. Niu Xi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix) hard branches selected, rhizome removed, soaked in wine and cleaned, 4 liang. Chuan Duzhong (Eucommiae Cortex) coarse bark removed, fried with clarified butter until fibers break, 4 liang. Xi Gouqi (Lycium Barbarum Fruit) washed with wine, dried, 4 liang. Shan Zhu Yu (Corni Fructus) washed with wine, dried, 4 liang. Huai Shanyao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma) soaked in licorice water, dried, 4 liang. Bei Wuweizi (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus) washed with wine, dried, 2 liang. Nan Mudanpi (Moutan Cortex) woody core removed, washed with wine, dried, 3 liang. Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma) hairs removed, washed with salt water, dried, 3 liang. Mianshan Huangqi (Astragali Radix) head and tail removed, honey-fried, dried, 4 liang. Tianhuafen (Trichosanthis Radix) fried with clarified butter, dried, 2 liang. Extract the long marrow from the center bone connecting the tiger's buttock, tail, and back. Mix with 4 liang of clarified butter until uniform, melt in a clay pot, then mix with refined honey. Process all above herbs, avoiding contact with women, chickens, and dogs. Choose auspicious days (Tian Yue De He), grind into fine powder, sieve repeatedly for uniformity. Use 2 jin of refined honey, mix uniformly with Tiger Marrow and clarified butter, pound thousands of times, form pills the size of Sophora seeds. Take 1 qian or 1.5 qian on an empty stomach daily, swallow with light salt water. This formula was obtained from Daoist Fan of Taiyuan. When I met him traveling in Sanjin at age twenty, he was already seventy but looked youthful with black beard, ethereal like an immortal. Asked about his secret, he said: "Concentrating spirit and guiding Qi yields slow results; controlling desires and taking medicine yields fast results." The Daoist's Tiger Marrow Pill is truly excellent. I record the formula and half the ingredients as a gift. I brought it back to share with friend Li Ruolin, aged forty, whose beard had prematurely turned gray. He took the Daoist's pill, and within a year, white hair turned black again. I marveled at the formula, noting that the herbs are gentle tonic methods suitable for everyone. Therefore, I published it for enthusiasts to try. (Recorded by Jin Xiaoqi.)
I was friendly with Zhang Xinhan, Member of the Ministry of Works. We once discussed obtaining a leopard at Song Office. Everyone ate the head and marrow within marrow, feeling their five limbs distended. Only one person ate the double essence (testicles/reproductive organs), resulting in whole-body spasms, inability to sit or lie down, eyes wide open and uncloseable, eyeballs protruding, staring straight out of the sockets, recovering only after three days. This shows the robustness of tigers and leopards; even after death, their meat remains potent. If knowledgeable persons blend them with complementary medicines into pills, it might greatly enhance vitality, but such materials are scarce. Thus, few have tried them. Bencao texts do not mention them. I preserve this theory for scholars of natural history to consider. (Recorded by Jin Xiaoqi.)
