Sweet, neutral, non-toxic. It promotes the circulation of wind-qi and expels pathogenic heat, treating retrograde vomiting (regurgitation) and opening chest disorders. It is effective in stopping severe diarrhea and dysentery, and particularly moistens dryness and withered conditions.

Sour, astringent, warm, slightly toxic. It treats diarrhea, dysentery, and rectal prolapse, and astringes male essence.

Yili Jindan (One Pill Golden Elixir): True Opium (1 fen), mixed with rice porridge to form three pills, each weighing approximately 1 qian. Take one pill per dose; if ineffective, take another, but do not overdose. Avoid vinegar. This formula treats all diseases. For wind paralysis, administer with wine; for deviation of mouth and eyes, administer with Qianghuo Decoction; for pain in all joints, administer with Duhuo Decoction; for frontal headache, administer with Qianghuo Decoction; for lateral headache, administer with Chuanxiong Decoction; for dizziness, administer with Fangfeng Decoction; for Yin toxin syndrome, administer with Doulin Wine; for malaria, administer with Peach and Willow Branch Decoction; for phlegm-wheezing, administer with Tingli Decoction; for chronic cough, administer with Ganjiang and Ejiao Decoction; for consumptive cough, administer with Donghua Decoction; for vomiting and diarrhea, administer with Huoxiang Decoction; for bloody dysentery, administer with Huanglian Decoction; for white dysentery, administer with Ganjiang Decoction; for anorectic dysentery, administer with Baizhu Decoction; for pain below the navel, administer with Dengxin Decoction; for various Qi pains, administer with Muxiang Wine; for hot pain, administer with Zhizi Decoction; for Xiao Chang Qi (small intestine Qi disorder), administer with Xiaohui Decoction; for blood and Qi pain, administer with Ruxiang Decoction; for pulse pain, administer with wine; for dysphagia, administer with Shengjiang and Dingxiang Decoction; for metrorrhagia, administer with Lingzhi Decoction; for slow spleen wind, administer with Sharen Decoction. For other symptoms, select the appropriate guiding decoction according to the condition. (First among all formulas.)

Stir-fried black beans are extremely hot in nature, while boiled ones are cold. Those that are tight and small are of superior quality.

For stiff neck and inability to look back, steam the beans until hot, wrap in cloth, and use as a pillow. (Verified Formula First.)

For wind-toxin attacking the heart causing restlessness and confusion, boil in water and drink. (Second.)

For sudden wind stroke with aphasia, boil and drink the juice. (Third.)

For throat obstruction (Hou Bi) with aphasia. Same method. (Fourth.)

For red, swollen, and painful eyes, steam several packs of beans, and at dawn, apply alternately with hot compresses. (Fifth.)

For flank pain as if beaten, stir-fry until charred, add wine, boil, and drink until intoxicated. (Sixth.)

For sudden pain in waist and flanks. Same method. (Seventh.)

For sudden lower back pain, stir-fry until hot and apply as a hot compress. (Eighth.)

For foot qi rushing to the heart, boil in water and drink. (Ninth.)

For edema of body and face, boil in water, then add wine and boil again before drinking. (Tenth.)

For new or chronic edema. Same method. (Eleventh.)

For abdominal痞 mass (hard lump), use ginger as a guide and decoct in water. (Twelfth.)

For unremitting watery diarrhea, stir-fry into powder, take 3 qian with rice water. (Thirteenth.)

For cholera with bloating and pain, lightly stir-fry into powder, take with water. (Fourteenth.)

For hematochezia in men, stir-fry until charred, pour hot wine over it, and drink. (Fifteenth.)

For all types of lower bleeding, soak in Sophora flavescens bark decoction, stir-fry until cooked, and make pills with lard. (Sixteenth.)

For pediatric sand-dysuria (urinary calculi), use 120 black beans, 1 qian raw licorice root, and 1 qian talc; decoct in water and drink. (Seventeenth.)

For kidney deficiency with wasting-thirst, difficult cases: stir-fry beans and make pills with Tianhuafen (Trichosanthes Root). (Eighteenth.)

For insomnia day and night, roast a new cloth on fire and compress the eyes. Then steam several packs of black beans and use them as pillows alternately. (Nineteenth.)

For epidemic swelling due to seasonal pathogens, stir-fry beans and decoct with roasted licorice root. (Twentieth.)

For poisoning from all vegetables, minerals, and foods, consume with licorice root. (Twenty-first.)

For food and alcohol poisoning, boiling and eating beans to induce vomiting is beneficial. (Twenty-second.)

For arsenic poisoning, decoct and drink. (Twenty-third.)

For fish poisoning, boil and drink. (Twenty-fourth.)

For croton seed poisoning, if diarrhea does not stop, boil and drink. (Twenty-fifth.)

For scalds and burns, boiling and eating beans facilitates healing. (Twenty-sixth.)

For head contusions and bruising, stir-fry into powder, mix with water, and apply externally. (Twenty-seventh.)

For internal stasis from abortion or falls, boil and drink. (Twenty-eighth.)

For wet and rotting pox, grind into powder and apply. (Twenty-ninth.)

For pediatric scalp sores, stir-fry into powder, mix with water, and apply. (Thirtieth.)

To dye hair black, boil with vinegar until thick, and use for dyeing. (Thirty-first.)

For toothache, decoct and gargle. (Thirty-second.)

For continuous menstruation, stir-fry until smoke disappears, add hot water, and drink. If ineffective and there is heart heat, avoid this method. (Thirty-third.)

For lower back pain during pregnancy, decoct with wine and drink. (Thirty-fourth.)

For dead fetus in the uterus, decoct with vinegar and drink. (Thirty-fifth.)

For retained placenta, decoct with wine and drink. (Thirty-sixth.)

For snake venom from vegetables, grind into powder, soak in wine, squeeze out juice, and drink. (Thirty-seventh.)

For sensation of insects crawling on skin, soak in water, squeeze out juice, and wash daily. (Thirty-eighth.)

For itching in the feet with yellow discharge, known as wind-ju (wind abscess): Use a 3-foot green bamboo tube, insert black beans inside, burn horse manure and bran to smoke the beans, collect the juice from both ends of the tube with a vessel, and apply. First, wash with rice water and salt. (Thirty-ninth.)

For pediatric bloody dysuria, boil black bean leaves in water and drink the juice. (Fortieth.)

Doulin Wine: Black beans (3 sheng). Stir-fry until cooked, put in a bottle, pour hot wine over it, and let stand for one day. Take warm doses to induce sweating. Treats all postpartum diseases, various postpartum wind syndromes, such as stiff back and locked jaw, irritability and convulsions, swelling of body and head, itching, vomiting, staring, numbness of limbs, dizziness, and blurred vision, all caused by deficiency-heat wind-stroke. Also treats facial deviation from wind-stroke, head wind headaches, and traumatic wind-stroke. (First among all formulas.)

Black Bean Deficiency-Tonifying Pills: Black beans (5 sheng). Boil until soft, peel, grind into powder, and make pills the size of beans using pig fat. Take 100 pills with wine per dose. Promotes muscle growth, enhances complexion, fills marrow, benefits Qi, tonifies deficiency, and improves appetite. Obese persons should not take this.

Famine Grain-Avoidance Divine Elixir: Black beans (5 dou, steamed three times and peeled), Hemp seeds (3 sheng, soaked overnight, steamed twice until they open). Grind each separately, mix, and knead into fist-sized balls. Steam in a steamer from Xu hour to Zi hour, remove at Yin hour, and dry in the sun at Wu hour to make powder. Take dry powder, enough to feel full, without consuming any other food. The first dose stops hunger for seven days, the second for forty-nine days, the third for three hundred days, and the fourth for two thousand four hundred days. No further need to take it; one will never feel hungry again. It makes one strong and prevents emaciation. If thirsty, grind hemp seeds and drink as soup, which further moistens the viscera. To resume eating other foods, take 3 he of sesame seeds, grind into powder, decoct in water, and drink. The discharged material will be golden-colored. One can eat anything without harm. Truly a celestial formula. (Third.)
