Taste is slightly bitter and pungent, nature is cool, non-toxic. Enters the Hand-Shaoyang (Sanjiao), Foot-Shaoyang (Gallbladder), Hand-Yangming (Large Intestine), Hand-Shaoyin (Heart), and Foot-Jueyin (Liver) meridians. It expels pus from sores, reduces swelling and toxicity, regulates menstruation, and treats the five types of Lin syndrome (Stone Lin, Blood Lin, Paste Lin, Labor Lin, Qi Lin). It dissipates blood stasis and qi stagnation in various meridians, clears exogenous heat and damp-heat from the Heart and Lungs. It treats Yingliu (goiter or neck masses), Gu poison (parasitic toxins), and white worms (intestinal parasites). It is considered the holy medicine for patients with sores and ulcers across the twelve meridians. Its leaves and stems treat accumulated heat in the Heart and Lungs.
This herb grows everywhere. There are two varieties: large and small. The large variety grows in low, wet areas or hillsides; it has green, narrow, elongated leaves resembling elm leaves, red stems three to four chi high, yellow flowers at the tips, and fruit resembling lotus seeds with internal chambers when ripe in autumn. The small variety grows on hilltops and plains; its flowers, leaves, and fruits resemble those of the large variety but are smaller.
