(Hand-Shaoyin Heart Meridian belongs to Ding Fire)
The Heart possesses the brightness of illuminating and overseeing. All fire from the Mingmen (Gate of Life) and distributed through the Sanjiao (Triple Burner) are entirely governed by the Heart and subject to its judgment. Hence it is called Jun Huo (Ministerial Fire/Imperial Fire). (Any medicinal material that is red in color, bitter in taste, scorched in aroma, and fiery in nature enters the Hand-Shaoyin Heart Meridian and Hand-Taiyang Small Intestine Meridian. The Heart and Small Intestine are interior-exteriorly related; the Small Intestine is Bing Fire, while the Heart is Ding Fire.) However, without Qi, the Heart cannot move; without Blood, it cannot function. With Qi to transport, the Heart can solidify its strength; with Blood to nourish, the Heart can manifest its spiritual utility. Therefore, to tonify Heart Qi (Heart Qi Deficiency), there is nothing superior to Longyan Rou (Longan Aril). To tonify Heart Blood (Heart Blood Deficiency), there is nothing superior to Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Baizi Ren (Biota Seed), Guiban (Tartar Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum), and Yanxi (Halitum/Salt). (The Classic states: The Heart desires softness; urgently use salty foods to soften it.) If the Heart harbors deep cold and entrenched chill (Heart Cold), then Guixin (Cinnamomi Cortex) is suitable for its drying heat, or one may add Yanhusuo (Corydalis Rhizome), Ruxiang (Olibanum/Gum Resin), Gusuibu (Drynariae Rhizoma), and Anshixiang (Benzoin) to dispel it. If Heart Qi is scattered and not gathered (Heart Qi Scattering), then Wuweizi (Schisandrae Fructus) is suitable for its astringent sourness. (The Classic states: The Heart suffers from laxity; urgently use sour foods to gather it. Note: Although Wuweizi is primarily a drug for the Lung and Kidney, it also possesses bitter properties and can be used generally.) If the Heart harbors phlegm-dampness (Phlegm-Dampness in Heart), then Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), Fushen (Poria with Hostwood), Dengxincao (Junci Medulla), and Xuancacao (Daylily Rhizome) are suitable for their draining permeability. If the Heart harbors internal dampness and internal heat (Heat-Dampness in Heart), then Daizheshi (Haematitum), Mutong (Akebiae Caulis), Qumai (Polygoni Avicularis Herba), Niuhuang (Calculus Bovis), Tianzhuhuang (Spatholobi Caulis/Tinosporae?), Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus), Shanzhizi (Gardeniae Fructus), Xiguahuang (Watermelon Albedo), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Chen Sha (Cinnabar), Baihe (Lilii Bulbus), Yujin (Curcumae Radix), Lianxu (Nelumbinis Stamen), Beimu (Fritillariae Bulbus), Gouteng (Uncariae Ramulus cum Uncis), Zhenzhu (Margarita), Tubei Mu (Fritillariae Thunbergii Bulbus), and Chuanlianzi (Toosendan Fructus) are suitable for their purging action. If the Heart harbors unresolved blood stasis (Blood Stasis in Heart), then Danshen (Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix), Moyao (Myrrha), Yujin (Curcumae Radix), Taoren (Persicae Semen), Qiancao (Rubiae Radix et Rhizoma), Sumu (Pterocarpus Santalinus Lignum), Yimucao (Leonuri Herba), Ou Lian (Nelumbinis Rhizoma), Tongbian (Human Urine), and Xuyutan (Hominis Pilus Carbonizatus) are suitable for their breaking and softening actions. (The Classic states: The Heart desires softness; urgently use salty foods to soften it. It also states: Use salty substances to tonify it.) As for when Heat Evil arises internally within the Heart (Heat Evil in Heart), drugs such as Dengcao (Junci Medulla), Zhuye (Bambusae Folium), Xiongdan (Ursi Fel), Lingyangjiao (Saigae Tataricae Cornu), Shandougen (Sophorae Tonkinensis Radix), Tongbian (Human Urine), Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix), Xuancacao (Daylily Rhizome), Shengdihuang (Rehmanniae Radix), Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus), Xijiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu - *Note: Substitute with Buffalo Horn in modern practice*), Mutong (Akebiae Caulis), and Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) can be selected. When Hot Phlegm arises internally in the Heart (Hot Phlegm in Heart), Niuhuang (Calculus Bovis) and Beimu (Fritillariae Bulbus) can be used. If Heart Qi is obstructed and not flowing, then Shichangpu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma), Yuanzhi (Polygalae Radix), Sangpiaoxiao (Mantidis Oötheca), Xunxiang (Frankincense/Olibanum), Xionghuang (Realgar), and Hushi (Coriandri Fructus) can be administered. Generally, the Heart prioritizes unobstructed flow; when Heart Qi flows freely, thought encounters no obstruction and operation becomes agile, just as fire must have space to ignite. The Heart also regards Qi as essential; sufficient Qi ensures endurance without failure, just as fire requires fuel to last. The Heart also requires Blood; sufficient Blood keeps the Heart present and undissipated, just as a lamp requires oil to shine. Combining these three aspects in treatment allows the Heart's illuminating function to remain normal, ensuring prosperity in all affairs, leaving no room for disease to arise.
The Classic states: The Heart suffers from laxity. (Laxity leads to scattering and逸荡.) Urgently use sour foods to gather it. (Such as Wuweizi. Note: Although Wuweizi is primarily a drug for the Liver and Kidney, it also possesses bitter properties and can be used generally.) The Heart desires softness; urgently use salty foods to soften it. (Such as Tongbian [Human Urine] and Xuyutan [Hominis Pilus Carbonizatus].) Use salty substances to tonify it. (The Heart takes saltiness as primary.) Use sweet substances to purge it.
