This is the wild variety of *Lilium* (Baihe, 百合), with narrow and long petals and a sweet taste; mountain people collect and sell it. *Zao Yi* records: There are three types of *Lilium*: one is called Mountain *Lilium*, which flowers late and has no fragrance; two is called Sandalwood *Lilium*, which is edible; three is called Tiger Skin *Lilium*, which is lethal if eaten. *Baicao Jing* records: White-flowered *Lilium* is used in medicine; red-flowered ones are named Shandan (Mountain Red Lily, 山丹); yellow-flowered ones are named Yehe (Night-blooming Lily, 夜合), which are now only used as potted ornamentals and not for medicinal use. Wild *Lilium* is of superior quality, coming in sweet and bitter varieties; the sweet ones can be used. Those resembling lotus petals without stamens or roots are best. It promotes urination and defecation; it is contraindicated for those with Qi deficiency and sinking.
*Feng Yuan* records: I personally saw earthworms transforming into *Lilium* in the crevices of soil on Baoshan. Some transformations were incomplete. Generally, wild *Lilium* arises from earthworm transformation; its effects of clearing heat, detoxifying, dissipating accumulation, and resolving blood stasis are inherent properties of the earthworm. *Yingyan Fang* records: For carbuncles and sores without heads, mash wild *Lilium* with salt and apply externally.
*Lilium* enters the Lung meridian due to its sweet flavor, clears phlegm-heat, tonifies deficiency and damage, and treats lung abscess (Fei Yong, 肺痈). *Jisheng Kuhai* records: Take three liang of white-flowered *Lilium*, mash it, mix with white wine, squeeze and extract the juice, and take one bowl.
Shi'er (Stone Ear / Shi Yi,
It is found in Xianju County, Taizhou. It grows on steep cliffs, precipitous rocks, or high sea cliffs, having absorbed the Qi of Yin and Yang, rain and dew, gradually infiltrating the stone surface. Over years, an "衣" (coat-like growth) forms. Fresh specimens are vividly green and lovely; dried ones are black on the surface and white as snow on the back. Locals make soup with it to entertain guests; it is considered a supreme delicacy. Cooking method: Use one bowl of boiling water, add a little salt, soak the Shi Yi inside, and gently rub and knead by hand to remove fine sand. When it becomes soft like cotton and the sand is completely removed, the color turns purple like a rose. Salt water is essential for it to expel all the trapped sand. Rinse with clear water two or three times more. Cook with chicken broth to eat; it is slippery, crisp, fresh, delicious, and most fragrant and sweet, ranking first among mountain vegetables. Among the six counties of Taizhou, only Xianju produces this Shi Yi. Some say it exists in deep mountains everywhere, but only people from Xianju can harvest it; thus, some Xianju residents make a living professionally from this trade. They venture from one or two hundred li nearby to several hundred li away, climbing into deep rock crevices and dangerous gorges where human footprints rarely reach, where this substance grows on walls. The harvesting method involves using vine harnesses to swing across, wearing clothes made of chicken feathers, and wearing special shoes, moving agilely like monkeys. They use tools such as hooked blades and shovel wheels. There are rituals before entering the mountain, and paper money is burned to pay for passage. Only local Xianju people master these techniques fully. Although many may join together, only one person is allowed to harvest at a time; it is forbidden for two people to harvest simultaneously, which is quite strange. People are inevitably injured each year, hence the price is high, and those greedy for profit compete to pursue it.
Shi'er has a sweet flavor and clear Qi, is cold in nature and non-toxic. It clears heat in the diaphragm, promotes urination, resolves phlegm, eliminates stagnation caused by goiter nodules, and has the merit of nourishing blood and brightening the eyes. If women consume it, it cleanses the uterus and facilitates conception; if men consume it, it benefits essence and increases marrow.
