*Guangdong Tongzhi* records: Bai Bie (White Soft-shelled Turtle) can treat Tan Huo (Phlegm-Fire). It was initially revealed by divine inspiration, and people in Guangzhou highly value it. There is a slogan saying: "Wu Er (Black-eared), Bai Jia Yu (White-shelled Fish), nourishing Yin and descending Fire takes only a moment." Another name is Yu Tuo Long (Jade Alligator Dragon), because its back rises like a Tuo Long (Chinese Alligator). Those with both the head and shell white are of good quality; those with a white shell but green head and feet are inferior. It tonifies deficiency and exhaustion, cures Phlegm-Fire, nourishes Yin and descends Qi, enriches Blood and benefits Essence.
Lu Zhiyi said: The turtle has no ears; it listens with its eyes. Therefore, its eyes should not glance around randomly. Its essence is recognized through clarity of vision, and further recognized through acuity of hearing. Not only does it govern the opening of the Liver (Gan), but its Gallbladder (Dan) also differs from others, possessing a pungent taste. Its high spine connects to the flanks, and the flanks belong to the Shaoyang Gallbladder Fu organ. This interaction between Wood and Metal allows for the combined use of sound and color; since the Liver stores the Gallbladder, their decision-making functions are closely related.
*Bencao Chengya Banji* records: Pungent in taste, it opens deafness and blindness, eliminates Zheng Jia (masses), Pi Ji (accumulations), polyps, and treats malignant yin erosion and hemorrhoidal nodules. Nowadays, people use it for sexual enhancement techniques, which is considered lowly.
Baojia Fang for Hemorrhoids and Fistulas: Take one Gallbladder of the soft-shelled turtle, extract the bile, grind it with incense ink, add a small amount of Shexiang (Musk) and Bingpian (Borneol), dip a chicken feather into the mixture, and apply it to the affected area.
*Wuli Xiaoshi* records: The gallbladder of the turtle is extremely pungent, and its ability to open orifices is particularly swift, which is unknown to most people.
*Bencao Gangmu*, under the entry for *Cheng* (Razor Clam), only records the meat, stating it treats Cold Li (Cold Dysentery) and tonifies postpartum deficiency, omitting the efficacy of its shell.
Wanxuan Fang for treating Hou Feng Ji Bi (Acute Wind-Obstruction of the Throat): Place the razor clam shell on a tile, expose it to sunlight during the day and dew at night. After one year, take it down. When the color is white as snow, crush it into fine powder, wash the powder thoroughly with water, dry it, mix it with Bingpian (Borneol), and blow it into the throat. It specifically treats all acute conditions of the throat and brings immediate relief.
*Hangzhou Fuzhi* records: Hai Si (Sea Snail), in Hangzhou custom, is eaten as a seasonal delicacy on Lixia (Start of Summer), sprinkled with Sichuan pepper and mixed with sesame oil. Cong Xin Yun stated: Compared to Luosi (River Snail), it is thinner and longer, with six or seven spiral ridges on the shell and spots on its head. In early spring, it crawls up and anchors itself to sea cliffs. Sea fishermen set nets below and catch them in one sweep. They are prepared with salt, wine, Sichuan pepper, and cinnamon. Note: Hai Si that are as large as a finger and about one to two inches long are called Ding Tou Luo (Nail-head Snail), found abundantly along the coasts of Wenling and Taizhou. Hai Si Luo lives in the tidal flats. After Lixia, some say they transform into swarms of flies, known today as Douniang (Damselflies). Some claim this snail can jump over a zhang (approx. 3 meters), likely migrating to new locations. This creature also eats Han (Ark Clams). Fenghua in Mingzhou has many Ark Clam fields, where seedlings are taken from the tidal flats for cultivation. Over time, they grow larger. Farmers occasionally weed and inspect the fields, fearing Hai Si seedlings. Ark Clams do not fear other creatures, only Hai Si. If Hai Si appear in an Ark Clam field, no Ark Clams will survive, as they are all sucked and consumed. Hai Si from Yuhuan are as large as a finger and are called Ding Tou Luo.
Salty and cold in nature, it treats Luo Li (Scrofula/Tuberculous lymphadenitis) and nodules, and can descend stagnant Qi.
Yunke Chuan Fang for repelling maggots: After eating Hai Si on Lixia, take seven shells without letting anyone see them, and scatter them in the toilet or chamber pot. During the hot summer days, no maggots will be born, which is quite effective.
