[Classified as Top Grade in the *Shennong Bencao Jing*]
**Names:** Yunhua, Yunzhu, Yunying, Yunye, Yunsha, Linshi (from *Shennong Bencao Jing*).
Li Shizhen said: Yunmu (Muscovite) is named according to its five colors; details are provided below. According to *Jingnan Zhi*, Yunmu is produced at Fangtai Mountain in Huarong. Locals observe where clouds emerge and dig underneath to extract the stone, invariably achieving great success. Some pieces are five or six chi long and can be used as screens, but one must avoid making noise during excavation. Based on this, this stone is the root of clouds, hence the name Yunmu (Cloud Mother), and the root of Yunmu is Yangqishi (Actinolite). *Baopuzi* states: "After taking Yunmu for ten years, cloud vapor often covers it. Taking its 'mother' to obtain its 'son' follows natural principles."
**Collection and Explanation:** *Mingyi Bielu* states: Yunmu grows in the valleys of Mount Tai, Qi Mountain, Lushan, and between the rocks of Beiding Mountain in Langya. It is harvested in the second lunar month. Yunhua possesses all five colors; Yunying is mostly green; Yunzhu is mostly red; Yunye is mostly white; Yunsha is yellowish-green; Linshi is pure white.
Tao Hongjing stated: According to *Xianjing*, there are eight types of Yunmu: When viewed towards the sun, those that are green-white with much black are named Yunmu; those that are yellow-white with much green are named Yunying; those that are green-yellow with much red are named Yunzhu; those like ice dew that fluctuate between yellow and white are named Yunsha; those that are yellow-white are named Yunye; those that are bright, pure white, and clear are named Linshi. These six types are suitable for consumption, each having a specific season. Those that are dark pure black with patterns resembling iron are named Yundan; those that are mixed black and strong/fat are named Dizhuo. These two types should not be consumed. There is a method for refining them, which requires precision; otherwise, ingestion will severely harm the body. Currently, only Yunmu from Lushan in Jiangdong is considered superior, though Qingzhou's is also good, cultivated in sandy soil over time.
Su Song stated: It is now found in Yunmeng Mountain in Yanzhou, as well as Jiangzhou, Chunzhou, and the Hang-Yue region, growing among earth and stones. It forms sheets in layers that can be split. Bright, smooth, and white specimens are of the highest grade. Some large, crystal-clear sheets are now used to decorate lanterns, retaining the ancient intent of fans and screens. Those produced in Jiangnan are mostly green-black and unsuitable for medicine. Note: Medical texts value white, lustrous Yunmu, except for the single-consumption method of Wei Shuqing from Zhongshan, which uses Yunmu with all five colors. Ge Hong's *Baopuzi* says: There are five types of Yunmu, which people cannot distinguish; one should hold it up to the sun to see if there are no mixed colors in the shade. Those with all five colors but predominantly green are named Yunying, suitable for spring consumption; those with all five colors but predominantly red are named Yunzhu, suitable for summer; those with all five colors but predominantly white are named Yunye, suitable for autumn; those with all five colors but predominantly black are named Yunmu, suitable for winter; those with only green and yellow colors are named Yunsha, suitable for late summer; pure white ones are named Linshi, suitable for all seasons. Ancient formulas for consuming the "Five Yun" are numerous, but the regulations of cultivation are likely too detailed for text and should not be taken lightly. Sun Zhi said: Green, red, yellow, purple, and white are all consumable; white, thin, light, and transparent ones are superior; black ones are unusable and cause strangury and sores.
**Processing:** Jiao Shi said: Generally, yellow-black ones are thick and hard; red ones handled by women are useless. One must select those that are glossy and ice-like, which are superior. For every jin, use Xiaodidanchao (Radix Bupleuri? *Note: Context implies a specific herb, likely distinct*), Zibeitiankui (Achyranthes bidentata var. atrata?), raw Gancao (Licorice Root), and Dihuang juice (Rehmannia Juice), each one yi. Dry herbs are finely chopped, wet ones yield juice. Place in a porcelain pot, add three yi of Tianchi water, and boil over fire for seven days and nights. Do not let the water and fire lose their balance; the Yunmu will naturally turn into a jade-green paste at the bottom. Then, violently throw in more Tianchi water, stir, and remove anything floating like snail slime. Repeat this washing process three times. Take one liang of Chenxiang (Agarwood), grind into powder, decoct in three sheng of Tianchi water, and use this liquid in three portions to wash the Yunmu paste again. Sun-dry and use.
*Baopuzi* states: Methods for consuming the Five Yun: Some dissolve Gui (Cinnamon Twig), Cong (Scallion), and Shuiyu (Quartz) in water; some collect dew in iron vessels and boil with Xuan water; some bury Nitrostone (Niter) in tubes to become water; some mix with honey to form curd; some soak in autumn dew for 100 days and store in leather bags as powder; some mix with Wudiancao and Chu blood to ingest. After one year, hundred diseases are eliminated; after three years, one returns to childhood; after five years, one can command spirits and gods.
Hu Yan said: Method for refining powder: In August or September, take Yunmu, mix evenly with Fanshi (Alum), seal in a clay jar. During the Sanfu period, it becomes soft; remove the alum. The next day, soak with dew from the heads of hundred herbs. After 100 days, process into powder using leather bags.
Li Shizhen said: Daoist texts state that boiling Yunmu in salt soup produces powder. Another says: Soak one jin of Yunmu in one dou of salt, steam in a copper vessel for one day, then pound into powder in a mortar. Another says: Pound one jin of Yunmu with one sheng of white salt finely, put in a heavy cloth bag, pour water until the salt taste is gone, hang in a high place to dry in the wind, and it naturally becomes powder.
**Flavor and Toxicity:** Sweet, neutral, non-toxic.
Li Quan said: Slightly toxic. Adversely affected by Xuchangqing (Polygona multiflori Caulis); avoid sheep blood and starch.
Zhang Yuansu said: Zexie (Alisma Rhizome) acts as an guiding herb; adverse reaction with Jia and running water. Tao Hongjing said: Refining with Alum causes softening and rotting, indicating mutual antagonism. Dew from hundred herbs is superior to east-flowing water; some use water dripping from thatched roofs in May.
Dugu Tao said: Controls mercury, subdues Zhusha (Cinnabar).
**Indications:** Treats dead skin and muscles, wind-stroke with cold and heat, dizziness as if in a cart or boat, expels evil qi, calms the five zang organs, benefits zi jing (essence), brightens the eyes, and with long-term use, lightens the body and prolongs life (*Shennong Bencao Jing*). Directs qi downward, firms muscles, reconnects severed tendons, tonifies the center, treats wulao qishang (five labors and seven injuries), deficiency and shortness of breath, stops dysentery. With long-term use, it beautifies, prevents aging, resists cold and heat, and elevates spiritual aspirations (*Mingyi Bielu*). Treats dysentery with intestinal issues, warms kidney cold (Zhen Quan).
**Elucidation:** Bao Sheng said: Yunmu belongs to Metal, hence its white color and association with the Lung.
Kou Zongshi said: Although ancient methods of consumption and refinement existed, few people consume it today due to extreme caution. Only Yunmu Ointment is used to treat all kinds of carbuncles, toxins, and sores; see *Heji Jufang*.
Shen Wei said: *Minghuang Zalu* records: During the Kaiyuan era, famous doctor Ji Peng could determine the depth of illness by observing a person's complexion and conversation without pulse diagnosis. The Emperor summoned him to the inner quarters to examine a palace maid who laughed, sang, cried, and howled daily like a madman and could not walk. Ji Peng observed and said: This must be caused by eating full and exerting great force, leading to a sudden fall. He prescribed Yunmu Tang (Decoction). The patient slept soundly and was relieved. Upon inquiry, she explained that during the birth of Princess Taihua, she was responsible for singing. Fearing her voice would not be clear and long, she ate trotter soup, became full, sang a grand song, felt intense heat in her chest afterwards, played on a terrace, fell, and took a long time to recover, resulting in this illness. Also, *Jingxiao Fang* records: Kang Daofeng, abbot of Zhangren Temple on Qingcheng Mountain, treated hundred diseases with Yunmu Powder: Take one jin of Yunmu, break apart, rub into a large bottle, pack tightly, pour one liang of Mercury on top to seal, roast over ten jin of top-fire until red-hot, remove, mix with Fragrant Scallion and Zi Lianqiao Cao (Purple Goldenrod Herb?), pound into mud, place in a double-layered silk bag, shake in a large basin of water to extract powder. If residue remains, add more herbs and pound again to extract powder. Use a wooden tray, make a shallow pit in ash, line with paper, pour powder in, wait for drying, and bake. Form pills the size of Chinese bayberry seeds using wheat paste. Effective for any patient. Xin Jianyi, Prefect of Chengdu, suffered from severe leprosy (Feng), unresponsive to other doctors. Kang offered this formula, which proved miraculous. *Baopuzi* states: Other things rot when buried and burn when fired; but the Five Yun do not burn in fierce fire for a long time nor rot when buried. Thus, those who consume it achieve longevity, are not wetted by water, not burned by fire, and uninjured by thorns.
Li Shizhen said: Ancients said Yunmu preserves corpses, preventing decay. When thieves dug up the tomb of Noble Lady Feng, her appearance was like alive, and they defiled her body; when digging the tomb of Duke You of Jin, hundreds of corpses were exposed. Their clothes looked like those of the living, due to the presence of Yunmu preserving them.
**Attached Prescriptions:** Seven old, seven new.
**Consuming Yunmu:** Take twenty jin of premium Baiyunmu (White Muscovite), tear thinly. Use eight dou of dew as soup, divide in half, and wash twice. Take another two dou as soup, add ten jin of Mangxiao (Mirabilite), soak in a wooden vessel for twenty days. Remove, place in a silk bag, hang under the roof, avoid wind and sun, let dry. Rub in a deer-skin bag from morning to noon, sieve residue and rub again, obtaining five dou of fine powder, discard the rest. Mix one dou of powder with two jin of cliff honey, stir into a paste, put in a bamboo tube, seal thinly with lacquer, bury under a south-facing cliff on the north wall, six chi deep, cover with soil. Retrieve after 40 days in spring/summer or 30 days in autumn/winter; it should become liquid. If not fully dissolved, bury for another 30 days. This water treats ten thousand diseases, including labor-qi and wind-rash. Take one he of warm water mixed with it, three times a day.
