(Compendium of Materia Medica)
[Collected Explanations] Li Shizhen stated: According to Shen Kuo's *Dream Pool Essays* (Mengxi Bitan): Tian She (Heavenly Snake, a venomous creature) grows in dark and damp places. After rain, it appears, being as flat as a chopstick, three to four chi long, with a yellowish-red color. Pouring vinegar on it causes it to dissolve; sprinkling it with Duan Shi (calcined mineral drug) also neutralizes it. If a person is stung by it and subsequently moistened by dew, the whole body will ulcerate. Some claim it is the venom of a yellow-flowered spider found among grasses, which causes whole-body ulceration. A physician examined the case and said, "A sting from Tian She is incurable." Nevertheless, he applied medicine to one swollen area and extracted more than ten snake-like entities with tweezers, yet the patient ultimately died. Additionally, a farmer in Qiantang suddenly suffered from what appeared to leprosy, with his entire body ulcerated, crying out in agony nearly to death. A monk from Xixi Temple examined him and said, "This is Tian She venom, not leprosy." He boiled Qin Pi (Phellodendron Bark) in water to make one dou of decoction and allowed the patient to drink freely. By the first day, symptoms were halved; after three days, he was completely cured. Furthermore, Water Snake can treat Tian She venom, see previous entries.

(Compendium of Materia Medica)
[Names] Guduo Xi (also written as Gudu), Bixi (Green Rhinoceros Horn).
Li Shizhen stated: According to Tao Zongyi's *Records of Stopping the Plough* (Chueng Lu): Guduo Xi is the horn of a large snake. The name should be interpreted as relating to "Gu Poison" (Gu Du), implying its ability to resolve Gu poison just like Rhinoceros Horn. There are records in the *Book of Tang*.
[Collected Explanations] Li Shizhen stated: According to the *Da Ming Hui Dian*, She Jiao (Snake Horn) originates from Hami Wei. Liu Yu's *Record of Western Envoys* mentions Da She Jiao (Large Snake Horn) from Xifan. Cao Zhao's *Treatise on Ancient Antiques* states: Gudu Xi is Bixi. Its color is like pale green jade, slightly yellowish. When struck, it produces a clear sound like jade; when ground and smelled, it has an aroma; when burned, it does not smell foul. It is extremely precious and can reduce swelling and detoxify. Hong Mai's *Records of Songmo* states: Guduo Xi is not very large. The texture resembles ivory with a yellow tint. Those made into knife handles are considered priceless treasures.
[Properties and Flavor] Toxic.
[Indications] Reduces swelling toxins, resolves various poisons and Gu poison; this employs the method of using toxicity to combat toxicity (Li Shizhen).
