(From *Bie Lu*)
[Collected Explanations] *Bie Lu* states:
Li Shizhen says: It is of the same kind as the viper (Fushé), which is also known as the hui snake (Hui). It is slightly more than one chi in length. The viper is larger, while the hui is smaller, but their toxicity is identical. This refers to what *Shi Jing* describes as "the hui has a color like soil and is smaller than the viper." For details, see the entry under "Viper". In older editions, it was written as "Lei" and given another name, which is incorrect. The character in question is indeed "Hui". Due to the similarity in shape between the characters, errors occurred during transcription. Tao Hongjing's annotation that the viper is this character is also erroneous. Since this character refers to the viper, it should not appear twice in *Bie Lu*. These have now been corrected together.
[Flavor and Toxicity] Information missing.
[Indications] Treats bi syndrome with internal leakage (from *Bie Lu*). Treats traumatic wind stroke and severe wind disease...
[Attached Prescriptions] One new prescription.
Traumatic Wind Stroke: Symptoms include tightness of the jaw, inability to open the mouth, deviation of the mouth and eyes, and flaccidity of the limbs. Take one earth hui snake (remove head, tail, skin, and bones; stir-fry with vinegar), five earthworms (Dìlóng, remove mud; stir-fry with vinegar), and one Rhizoma Pinelliae Preparata (Tiānnánxīng, weighing eight qian; processed). Grind all into powder. Use vinegar and wheat paste to make pills the size of mung beans. Take three to five pills per dose, washed down with ginger wine. Also consume thin porridge with white scallions to induce sweating, after which the illness will resolve. Previously, Palace Envoy Ming Guangzu, who served as an official, suffered severe trauma and found this prescription effective. (From *Puji Fang*)
(From *Shi Yi*)
[Collected Explanations] Chen Cangqi says: It is produced in various counties of Cangwu. Its appearance resembles a segmented viper. If broken at the segment, the head is toxic, while the tail is non-toxic. People in Lingnan call it "Lan Yao" (Blue Medicine).
[Indications] Using its head combined with poison can cause death to those poisoned. Eating its tail prepared as dried meat can detoxify the body (Chen Cangqi).
(From *Shi Yi*)
[Names] Zhi Shou She (from *Erya*), Yue Wang She.
Li Shizhen says: "Zhi" means two. Guo Pu stated: People in Kuaiji say it was transformed from the bowstring of King Yue, hence the name Yue Wang She. People in Jiangdong call Yue Wang She "Yue Wang Yue Fa". *Xu Bowu Zhi* records:
[Collected Explanations] Chen Cangqi says: The two-headed snake is as thick as a finger. One end lacks a mouth and eyes, yet both ends can move. It is said that seeing it is inauspicious, so Sun Shu'ao buried it, fearing that others who saw it would surely die.
Li Shizhen says: According to *Erya*, the Zhi Shou Snake exists in the central regions, arising from the unique qi of China. Liu Xun's *Lingbiao Lu Yi* states: They are extremely common outside the mountains. They are slightly more than one chi long, as thick as a small finger, with brocade-like patterns on the back and red scales on the belly. Locals consider them ordinary and do not regard them as strange.
Luo Yuan's *Erya Yi* states: They are very numerous in Ningguo, with dozens living in the same burrow, having black scales with white markings. Another type appears after rain in summer, as large as an earthworm, with scales, but its crawling manner is unlike... flesh...
[Flavor and Toxicity] Li Shizhen says: According to *Nan Yue Zhi*: It is non-toxic. Barbarians consume it.
[Indications] Malaria. Mountain people collect and dry it, wearing it around the neck (Li Shizhen).
