(From *Tang Bencao*)
[Names] Moduo Seng (*Tang Bencao*), Ludi. Gong stated: "Mituo" and "Moduo" are both Hu (ancient terms for peoples of the north and west) words.
[Collection & Explanation] Gong stated: It originates from Persia, resembling yellow dragon teeth in shape, being hard and heavy; some are white with marble-like patterns.
Song stated: It is now also found in silver and copper smelting areas in Lingnan and Fujian; it is the residue from refining silver and lead. Initially, when mining ores, silver and copper are mixed. Lead is first added to smelt them together, causing the silver to separate out with the lead. Then, mountain tree leaves are collected and burned to ash. A pit is dug in the ground to serve as a furnace, filled with this ash, called a "Ash Pool." The silver-lead mixture is placed on the ash, and fire is applied. The lead seeps down into the ash, while the silver remains on top. After cooling, the silver is extracted. This Ash Pool, having absorbed the qi of lead and silver over time, accumulates to form this substance; it may not necessarily come from foreign lands. Cheng stated: What is sold in markets today is made by forging small bottles of Qian Dan (Lead Oxide). Large pieces still retain the bottle shape. Those produced from silver smelting are of the best quality but are rarely available. Foreign versions have never been seen by me.
Shizhen stated: Mituo Seng originally came from silver smelting. Since it is now difficult to obtain, the residue at the bottom of furnaces in shops that melt silver is used instead. Those who produce Huang Dan (Yellow Red Lead) refine Mituo Seng from silver-lead residues; those shaped like bottles belong to this category.
[Processing] Yue stated: When using, crush it finely, place it in a porcelain pot, cover with multiple layers of paper bags containing willow-borer powder, and roast. Then fill with running water from the east, boil over fire for one shichen (two hours), remove the willow powder and paper bags, and use.
[Flavor & Toxicity] Salty, pungent, neutral, slightly toxic. Ming stated: Sweet, neutral, non-toxic.
Shizhen stated: It can counteract the toxicity of Yelangdu (Stemona Root).
[Indications] Chronic dysentery, five types of hemorrhoids, metal wounds, facial scars, and used in facial cosmetics (*Tang Bencao*).
Baosheng stated: The "five types of hemorrhoids" refer to Mu Zhong (protruding), Jiu Zhong (alcohol-related), Chang Zhong (intestinal), Xue Zhong (bloody), and Qi Zhong (gas-related). Calms the heart, tonifies the five zang organs, treats epilepsy and cough, vomiting and regurgitation with phlegm (Ming). Treats reverse stomach qi and thirst-disease, malaria and dysentery. Stops bleeding, kills parasites, resolves accumulation. Treats various sores, reduces swelling and detoxifies, removes fox odor, dyes eyebrows and hair black (Shizhen).
[Elucidation] Shizhen stated: Mituo Seng absorbs the qi of lead and silver; its nature is heavy, sinking, and descending directly to the lower jiao. Therefore, it can descend phlegm, stop vomiting, resolve accumulation, calm epilepsy, treat malaria and dysentery, relieve thirst, and heal sores. Hong Mai's *Yijian Zhi* records: For those whose fright qi has entered the heart collaterals, resulting in aphonia and inability to speak, administering one spoonful of Mituo Seng powder mixed with tea results in immediate recovery. Once, a person chopping wood was chased by a wild wolf and contracted this illness; someone taught him this prescription, and he recovered. Another military officer contracting this illness after being frightened by a venomous snake while gathering vines also recovered using this method. This occurs because fright causes qi chaos; the heaviness of Mituo Seng dispels fear and soothes the liver. Its efficacy is similar to that of Qian Dan (Lead Oxide), hence it is used in place of Qian Dan in plasters.
[Attached Prescriptions] Three old prescriptions, fifteen new ones. Phlegm knotting in the chest and not dispersing: Mituo Seng 1 liang. Decoct with one cup of vinegar and one cup of water until dry, then grind to powder. Take 2 qian each time, decocted with a small cup of wine and a small cup of water until reduced to one cup, take warm. Ideally, phlegm and saliva should be expectorated shortly after (*Shenghui Fang*).
Thirst-disease with excessive drinking: Shenxiao Wan: Use Mituo Seng 2 liang. Grind to powder, mix with steamed dough soaked in hot water to make pills the size of wu zi (cherry seeds). Take with strong decoction of silkworm cocoons, salt water, or eggplant root soup, or with wine. Start with 5 pills daily, increasing by 5 pills daily up to 30 pills. Do not overdose. After 5-6 doses, stop when nausea upon seeing water occurs. During nausea, suppress it with dry food; it will settle naturally later. Very remarkable (*Xuanqi Fang*).
Red and white dysentery: Mituo Seng 3 liang, roasted until yellow and ground to powder. Take 1 qian each time, taken with vinegar and tea, three times a day (*Shenghui Fang*).
Changfeng hemorrhoids: Tongqing (Azurite) and Mituo Seng 1 qian each, plus a little Shexiang (Musk). Grind to powder, mix with saliva, and apply externally (*Jiji Fang*).
Newborn infant with body resembling fish bladders or crystal, breaking to release fluid, which then regenerates: Apply raw, ground Mituo Seng powder externally, and internally administer Suhexiang Wan (*Jiuji Fang*).
Aphonia due to fright qi: See Elucidation section.
Axillary fox odor: Wash clean with Jiangshui (fermented grain wash), mix Mituo Seng with oil, and apply. Take 1 qian, sandwich between halves of a hot steamed bun, and apply to the armpit (*Jijian Fang*).
Fragrant breath/removing bad odor: Mix 1 qian of Mituo Seng with vinegar, rinse mouth (*Pujifang*).
Adult mouth ulcers: Forge and grind Mituo Seng fine, sprinkle on affected area (*Shengjifang*).
Infant mouth ulcers, unable to suckle milk: Mix Mituo Seng powder with vinegar, apply to the sole of the foot. Wash off when healed. Prescription from Physician Cai (*Jianyi Fang* by Li Jushi).
Ulcers inside the nose: Equal parts Mituo Seng and Xiang Baizhi (Angelica Dahurica). Grind to powder, mix with candle wax oil, and apply (*Jianbian Fang*).
Red nose tip: Mituo Seng 2 liang, finely ground, mixed with human breast milk. Apply at night, wash in the morning (*Shenghui Fang*).
Smallpox scars: Same formula as above (Tan Shi).
Spots/Pigmentation: Same formula as above (*Waitai Mi Yao*).
Summer sweat spots resembling rashes: Use Mituo Seng 8 qian, Xionghuang (Realgar) 4 qian. First rub the skin hot with ginger slices, then use ginger slices dipped in the powder to rub the area. It turns black and scabs the next day (*Huoren Xintong*).
Bone abscess exuding bone, also known as Duogu Chuang (Multi-bone sore), occasionally expelling fine bones. This is caused by the mother engaging in intercourse with close relatives within one month of conception, absorbing their essence, hence the name "multi-bone." Mix Mituo Seng powder with tung oil, spread on plaster, and apply. Cures immediately (*Shouyu Fang*).
Blood-wind sores: Mituo Seng, dissolve in sesame oil by grinding in a coarse bowl. Spread on oil paper as a plaster, apply repeatedly (Sun Shi *Jixiao Fang*).
Genital sweating and itching: Apply Mituo Seng powder. Dai Shi's addition includes Shechuangzi (Cnidium) powder.
