[Names] Fangzhu Water. Chen Zangqi stated: Fangzhu refers to large freshwater mussels. When rubbed thoroughly until warm and held towards the moon, it yields two or three *he* (ancient liquid measure) of water, similar to morning dew. Yangsui (ancient bronze fire mirror) faces the sun, while Fangzhu faces the moon; both can obtain fire and water respectively. The *Rites of Zhou* records using Mingzhu to catch water under the moonlight, presenting it as Xuanjiu (dark wine for sacrifices). Li Shizhen stated: Mingwater is obtained to utilize its clarity and purity, representing the utmost reverence. In the *Rites of Zhou*, the official Si Xuan uses Huisui (fire mirror) to extract bright fire from the sun, and Jian (water mirror) to extract Mingwater from the moon, for solemn sacrifices. Wei Boyang’s *Can Tong Qi* states: Yangsui extracts fire, but without the sun, no light is generated; Fangzhu cannot yield water unless facing stars or the moon. The *Huainanzi* states: When Fangzhu sees the moon, it exudes moisture to become water. Commentators have variously identified Fangzhu as stone, large mussel, or a substance refined from five minerals, all of which are incorrect. According to the *Kaogong Ji* (Artificers' Record), an alloy of equal parts copper and tin is called the material for making mirrors; thus, fire is drawn by Sui (mirror) and water by Jian (mirror). Gao Tanglong stated: Yangsui is also known as Yangfu, extracting fire from the sun. Yinsui is also known as Yinfu, extracting water from the moon. Both are made of copper and referred to as mirrors of water and fire. This explanation is correct. Gan Bao’s *Soushen Ji* (In Search of the Supernatural) states: The nature of gold and tin is identical. Cast at noon on a Bingwu day in May, it becomes Yangsui; cast at midnight on a Renzi day in November, it becomes Yinsui.

[Names] Li Shizhen stated: When Yin energy is abundant, dew condenses into frost. Frost can kill living things, whereas dew nourishes them; their properties change with the seasons. The *Ganxiang Zhan* states: Heavenly qi descends to form dew, and clear wind blows to create frost. Frost serves to kill all things and eliminate... If it should descend but does not, or if it should kill things but does not, these indicate lax and negligent governance. If it should not descend but does, or if it should not kill things but does, these indicate harsh and cruel governance. Xu Shen’s *Shuowen Jiezi* states: Early frost is called "Ling"; white frost is called "Ai". There is also Xuanfrost. Chen Cheng stated: To collect frost, sweep it up with chicken feathers, seal it in a bottle, and store it in a cool place; it will not spoil even after a long time.
[Properties and Flavor] Sweet, cold, non-toxic.
