**[Names]** Gaolu (Paste Dew, from *Bencao Gangmu*), Ruilu (Auspicious Dew, from *Bencao Gangmu*), Tianjiu (Heavenly Wine, from *Bencao Gangmu*), Shenjiang (Divine Nectar). Li Shizhen states: According to the *Ruiying Tu* [Illustrated Book of Auspicious Omens], Ganlu is beautiful dew. It is the essence of spirits and the grace of benevolence; it coagulates like fat and tastes sweet as maltose syrup, hence the names Gan (Sweet), Gao (Paste), Jiu (Wine), and Jiang (Nectar). The *Jin Zhongxing Shu* [History of the Eastern Jin] records: If a ruler respectfully cares for the elderly, Ganlu descends upon pine and cypress trees; if he honors the worthy and embraces the masses, Ganlu descends upon bamboo and reeds. The *Liexing Tu* [Star Chart] records: When the star Tianru [Heaven's Breast] shines brightly and moistly, Ganlu descends. All the above theories attribute this to the influence of auspicious qi. The *Lüshi Chunqiu* [Master Lü's Spring and Autumn Annals] records: Among waters, the finest are the dew of Sanwei; among foods, the finest are the dew of Jieyu, which is purple in color. The *Shiyiji* [Records of Retrieval] records: On Mount Kunlun there is Ganlu; viewed from afar it resembles cinnabar, but when adhering to plants it is bright and white like snow. The *Shanhaijing* [Classic of Mountains and Seas] records: In the fertile lands, the people of Yao Mountain drink Ganlu; those who do not live long reach eight hundred years. The *Yitongzhi* [Comprehensive Gazetteer] records: Mengshan in Yazhou often has Ganlu. All the above theories refer to common local products. Du Hao stated: Ganlu is not an auspicious omen, but rather the moment when plants are about to wither, their essence suddenly emitting outward, called "Quexing" [Sparrow Syrup]; this explanation is quite logical.

**[Collected Explanations]** Zang Qi states: It grows in the remote regions of Baxi, resembling maltose syrup. Li Shizhen states: According to the *Fangguo Zhi* [Record of States], the Dashi Kingdom collects dew in autumn and dries it in the sun until it forms sugar frost; this is likely this substance. Furthermore, the *Yitongzhi* [Comprehensive Gazetteer] records: Samarkand is located in Western Fan, where small clumps of grass grow densely. The leaves are fine like indigo; autumn dew condenses on them, tasting like honey, and can be boiled into syrup. Locals call it "Daji Gubin," which is likely Ganlu. This is similar to Cimi [Thorn Honey], and is also mentioned in the Fruit section.
