Ge Hong in *Baopuzi: Inner Chapters* states: The Wen clan of Nanyang, during the late Han Dynasty, fled to Mount Hu. They were starving and exhausted, near death. Someone taught them to eat *Zhu* (Atractylodes rhizome), after which they no longer felt hunger. Decades later, when they returned home, their complexion was more youthful than before, and their energy and strength had increased. Therefore, *Zhu* is also known as "Mountain Essence," which refers to what *Shennong's Classic of Medicine* says: "If you wish for longevity, often consume Mountain Essence."
Li Shizhen says: According to *Tunajing* (Breathing Regulation Classic): Ziwei Furen's preface on *Zhu* states: "I have observed that among herbs, none offer faster or greater benefits to oneself than *Zhu*. It can promote longevity and clear vision, becoming more efficacious over time. Recluses in mountains and forests who take *Zhu* are as numerous as the peaks of the Five Great Mountains." Additionally, *Shenxian Zhuan* (Biographies of Divine Immortals) records: Chen Zihuang obtained a key prescription for taking *Zhu*. His wife, Jiang Shi, suffered from fatigue; after taking it, she recovered spontaneously, her complexion and strength returning to that of a twenty-year-old. Li Shizhen carefully verifies: All the above accounts seem to refer specifically to *Cangzhu* (Rhizoma Atractylodis), not merely *Baizhu* (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae). Currently, practitioners of dietary therapy also call *Cangzhu* "Immortal Herb," so these accounts are listed after *Cangzhu*. Furthermore, Zhang Zhongjing used *Chishu* (Red Atractylodes, i.e., *Cangzhu*) burned with pig trotter hooves to ward off all evil qi. Tao Hongjing also stated that *Zhu* can eliminate evil qi and avert disasters. Thus, during epidemics and on New Year's Day, people often burn *Cangzhu* to dispel malevolent influences. *Leibian* records that the wife of Gao, a commoner from Yue, fell ill with delirium and hallucinations, claiming possession by her deceased husband's ghost. Her family burned *Cangzhu* smoke, and the ghost immediately requested to leave. *Yijian Zhi* records a scholar from Jiangxi infected by a female demon. As the ghost departed, it said: "You are infiltrated by Yin pathogenic factors; you will suffer sudden diarrhea. It is best to take much *Pingwei San* (Pingwei Powder). *Cangzhu* within it can remove pathogens." Xu Shimwei in *Benshi Fang* (Formulas of Personal Experience) said: "I suffered from *Yinpi* (accumulation of fluid retention forming masses) for thirty years. Initially, because I sat writing at night leaning left on my desk, food often fell to the left side. I drank several cups of wine at midnight and slept on my left side. In my youth, I noticed nothing, but three to five years later, I heard sounds only from the lower left abdomen, experienced hypochondriac pain, reduced appetite, and epigastric discomfort, stopping after half a cup of wine. Every ten days or so, I would vomit several sheng of sour fluid. In summer, I sweated only on the right side, never on the left. I visited many famous doctors and overseas prescriptions; occasionally effective, but relapse occurred after just over a month. I tried tonics like Tianxiong, Fuzi, and Fanshi; and purgatives like Qianniu, Gansui, and Daji, trying them all. I reasoned there must be a 'Pi Nang' (mass bag), like a puddle requiring a depression to hold water; without filling the depression, flow cannot proceed. Clear fluids move, but turbid fluids stagnate due to lack of drainage, accumulating until vomiting expels them every five to seven days. Spleen Earth dislikes dampness, and water flows to damp places. It is better to dry dampness and strengthen the Spleen to remove dampness, and fortify Earth to fill the depression. Thus, I discarded other medicines, using only one jin of *Cangzhu* (peeled, sliced, powdered), half liang of raw Sesame seeds (ground in two zhan of water, filtered juice), and fifty Jujubes (boiled, peeled, pitted). These were pounded together into pills the size of mulberry seeds. Taken warm on an empty stomach, starting with 50 pills, increasing to 100-200. Avoid peach, plum, and sparrow meat. After three months, the disease was cured. Since then, regular use prevented vomiting and pain, widened the chest and diaphragm, restored normal eating, enabled sweating all over in summer, and allowed reading small print under lamplight—all due to the power of *Zhu*. Initially, slight dryness occurs; this can be relieved by taking Gardenia powder with boiling water. Long-term use eliminates dryness naturally."
