(Pronounced "yu jin qie". From *Tang Bencao* [Compendium of Materia Medica of the Tang Dynasty].)
**Names**: Renzhongbai (Human Urine Deposit). Li Shizhen stated: The sediment is called " ", which is the white substance precipitated from clarified human urine. The best quality is that which has been dried by wind and sun exposure for a long time. For medicinal use, it must be calcined over a tile before application.
**Flavor and Properties**: Salty, neutral, non-toxic. Chen Zangqi stated: Cool in nature.
**Indications**: Epistaxis (nosebleed), burns and scalds (*Tang Bencao*). Calcined and ground into powder, it treats tight-lipped sores (Su Gong). It treats transmissive consumption with heat and wasting, lung atrophy, heat in the heart and diaphragm, emaciation, and thirst diseases (Chen Zangqi). It descends fire, resolves blood stasis, and treats sores and cancrum oris in the throat, mouth, and teeth (Li Shizhen).
**Analysis**: Zhu Zhenheng stated: Renzhongbai can purge Liver Fire, Sanjiao Fire, and Bladder Fire, excreting them via urination, as the Bladder is the natural pathway for this substance. Li Shizhen stated: Renzhongbai descends Ministerial Fire and resolves blood stasis, because salty flavors moisten and direct downwards, entering the Blood level. Currently, its use in treating various sores of the mouth and tongue is effective, verifying its fire-descending property. Zhang Gao recorded in *Yi Shuo*: Li Qi suffered frequently from epistaxis, retaining only faint breath. Zhang Sishun treated him with Renzhongbai Powder, stopping the bleeding immediately. Another case involved Zeng Tang, an official from Yanling Town, whose nose bled profusely, staining his white clothes red, leaving him feeling empty-headed. Dr. Zhang treated him with Renzhongbai medicine, stopping the bleed with no recurrence. These are all verifications of blood-resolving properties.
**Attached Prescriptions**: Two old prescriptions, thirteen new ones. Severe or chronic epistaxis: One egg-sized piece of Renzhongbai and five liang of cotton paper, calcined and ground. Take two qian each time, washed down with warm water. (*Shengji Zonglu*) Bleeding from orifices: Same prescription as above. Incessant epistaxis lasting five to seven days: Renzhongbai, dried on a new tile, mixed with a small amount of Moschus (She Xiang), taken with warm wine for immediate effect. (*Jingyan Fang*) Hematohidrosis (sweating blood): Same prescription as above. Migraine or frontal headache: Equal parts Renzhongbai and Earthworm (Di Long, stir-fried), ground into powder, formed into pills the size of mustard seeds with sheep bile. Dissolve one pill in fresh drawn water and instill into the nostril. Named "One Drop of Gold". (*Pujifang*) Edema and distension: Human urine, boiled until it can form pills. Take a size of a small bean each time, three times daily. (*Qianjin Fang*) Tinea pedis forming fistulas: A hole appears on the heel, about half cun deep, with extreme pain. Use calcined Renzhongbai; when water exudes, drip it into the wound. (Dai Yuanli, *Zhengzhi Yaojue*) Infantile cholera: Powdered urine sediment, taken with breast milk for good effect. (*Qianjin Fang*) Nasal polyps: Renzhongbai baked on a tile, take one qian with warm water each time. (*Zhu Shi Jiyan Fang*) Inverted chickenpox/rash: Collect Renzhongbai in the twelfth lunar month, calcine and grind into powder. Take three qian with warm water; inverted lesions will naturally erupt. (*Rumen Shiqin*) Mouth and tongue sores: Seven parts toilet bowl scale and three parts Alum (Ku Fan), ground evenly. Wipe away saliva, apply several times until healed. (*Jijian Fang*) Infantile oral cancrum: Equal parts Renzhongbai (calcined) and Phellodendri Cortex (Huang Bo, honey-fried until charred), mixed with a little Borneol (Bing Pian). Clean the area with a green cloth, sprinkle powder, repeatedly effective. (Lu Shi, *Jingyan Fang*) Rapid-progressing cancrum oris: Scrape white scales from the inside of a urinal, place in a porcelain bottle, seal with salt mud, calcine until red, grind into powder, add a little Moschus, and apply to the lesion. This is the formula of Li Tingling from Bianliang. Another formula: One qian of white scale from women's urinals (calcined), three fen of Verdigris (Tong Lv), one fen of Moschus, mix evenly and apply, especially efficacious. Restlessness and heat in rash: Renzhongbai or white scale from old fecal pits, washed clean and ground. Take two qian with plain water or wine each time. (*Douzhen Bianlan*)
