[Collected Explanations] Song said: It grows in Yinzhou, mostly attached to the sand and rocks on riverbanks. In spring, it produces seedlings; the stems are green, about one chi high, with leaves resembling those of water willow but shorter.
In the eighth and ninth months, local people harvest it.
[Flavor and Toxicity] Acrid, bitter, slightly toxic.
[Indications] Decocted together with Licorice Root (*Gancao*), it treats [text missing], and can also induce vomiting of wind-phlegm (Song).
[Appendix] Stone Weeping Grass Song said: It grows in the mountains of Fuzhou. It flowers in the third month, and seeds are harvested in the fourth month. Freshly crushed into powder and taken as pills, it treats gu poison.
(*Shennong Benjing*, Upper Grade)
[Names] Shenhuo (*Benjing*), Jiehuo (same), Jiuhuo (*Bielu*), Ju Huo (same), Huhuo (*Gangmu*), Bihuo (same), Huomu (*Bielu*).
Hongjing said: Among the names of many herbs, Jing Tian is the most beautiful. People grow it in pots on roofs, claiming it can ward off fire, hence the name Shenhuo. It is rarely used in prescriptions.
[Collected Explanations] *Bielu* says: Jing Tian grows in the valleys of Mount Tai. It is harvested on the fourth day of the fourth month and the seventh day of the seventh month, then dried in the shade.
Song said: It is now found in both the north and south. Families plant it in courtyards or place it in pots on roofs. In spring, it produces seedlings; the leaves resemble Purslane (*Machi Xian*) but are larger, growing in layers upwards, with very fragile stems. In mid-summer, it opens small red-purple flowers, and dies back after autumn. There are also perennial roots. The seedlings, leaves, and flowers are all usable.
Zong said: It is extremely easy to propagate; a broken branch placed in soil and watered for ten days will take root.
Shizhen said: Jing Tian is often planted by people on rocky hills. Seedlings emerge in the second month; the stems are brittle, slightly reddish-yellow, one to two chi high, exuding juice when broken. The leaves are pale green, glossy, soft, and dense, resembling the head of a long spoon or Vicia faba leaves but not pointed. In summer, it opens small white flowers, bearing fruits similar to Forsythia (*Lianqiao*) but smaller, containing black seeds like millet grains. The leaves have a slightly sweet and bitter taste; after frying/cooking and rinsing with water, they are edible.
[Correction of Errors] Hongjing said: Outside the city of Guangzhou, there is a tree three or four zhou in circumference, named Shenhuo Tree.
Zhi said: People in Lingbiao say there is no such thing. This was likely inserted erroneously by copyists and is not Hongjing's words.
