(Song Dynasty *Kaibao Bencao*)
[Names] Honghua (Red Flower) (*Kaibao Bencao*). Su Song stated: Its flowers are red, and its leaves resemble those of the Indigo plant (*Baphicacanthus cusia*), hence the name "Lan" (Indigo).
[Collection and Explanation] Tao Hongjing stated: Honglanhua is the same as Honghua. It grows in Lianghan and the Western Regions. The *Bowuzhi* records that Zhang Qian brought seeds back from the Western Regions. It is now also cultivated in the Wei region. The lower part of the plant has many thorns, and the flowers are large. When dried, it can be used to dye true red or to make rouge.
Li Shizhen stated: Honghua can be sown in February, August, and December. Seeds should be scattered after rain, similar to the method for sowing hemp. The young leaves and shoots are edible when fresh. The leaves resemble those of *Cirsium japonicum* (Xiaoji). Flowers bloom in May, resembling those of *Cirsium setosum* (Daji) but red. In the early morning, harvest the flowers, cook them by pounding, wash with water, squeeze out the yellow juice using a cloth bag; pound again, wash with sour millet rinse water, squeeze out the juice again; cover with *Artemisia argyi* (Qinghao) overnight, then dry in the sun. Alternatively, shape into thin cakes and dry in the shade for storage. For medicinal use, crush before use. The seeds are harvested in May, washed clean, pounded, decocted, mixed with vinegar, and eaten with vegetables; they are very delicious. They can also be used to make axle grease and candles.
[Properties and Flavor] Pungent, warm, non-toxic.
Wang Haogu (Zhang Yuansu) stated: Enters the Heart meridian to nourish blood. He considered it bitter and warm, yang within yin, thus entering the Heart. Combined with *Angelicae Sinensis Radix* (Danggui), it generates new blood.
Li Dongyuan (Haogu) stated: Pungent, sweet, bitter, and warm. It is a drug for the blood aspect of the Liver meridian. Taking it with wine is effective.
[Indications] Postpartum syncope due to blood loss, trismus (lockjaw), colicky pain caused by incomplete expulsion of lochia (evil blood) in the abdomen, and fetal death in utero. All are treated by decocting with wine. It also treats Gu poison (*Kaibao Bencao*). Large doses break up stagnant blood, while small doses nourish blood (Zhenheng's view). It activates blood circulation, moistens dryness, relieves pain, dissipates swelling, and unblocks menstruation (Li Shizhen's view).
[Elucidation] Li Shizhen stated: Blood is generated by the Pericardium, stored in the Liver, and governed by the Chong and Ren meridians. Since Honghua juice shares the nature of blood, it can promote blood circulation in men and regulate menstruation in women. Large doses promote blood flow, while small doses nourish blood. According to *Yanghe Manbi*: A woman of the Xu family in Xinchang died from postpartum syncope, but her chest and diaphragm remained slightly warm. A famous doctor named Lu diagnosed it as blood stagnation and stated that several dozen jin of Honghua were needed to save her. They quickly purchased it, boiled it in a large pot, placed three buckets under a window lattice, and fumigated the woman lying above it, reheating the liquid as it cooled. After a short while, her fingers moved, and she revived after half a day. This method derives from Tang Dynasty physician Xu Yinzong's technique of fumigating Empress Liu with Huangqi decoction for wind disease.
