Li Shizhen states: The stems, leaves, spikes, and seeds are the same as those of *Celosia cristata* (Cockscomb). Its leaves turn bright red in September, looking like flowers from a distance, hence the name. People in Wu call it "Lao Shao Nian" (Old and Young Year). Another variety with red leaves in June is named "Shi Yang Jin" (Ten-Color Brocade).
Li Shizhen states: According to *Tu Su Zhen Jun Ben Cao*, its shape resembles *Celosia cristata* flower, and its leaves are similar. When broken, it exudes a milky juice. It grows in ponds and marshes in Jiang, Hu, and Jingnan regions. Juice collected in May can be used to process Realgar (Xiong Huang) and Sulfur (Liu Huang), or to boil Orychophragmus violaceus (Ci Huang) and cinnabar (Zha Sha).
Someone says: Si Mo Zi and Shu Xi Zi closely resemble *Celosia argentea* seeds (Qing Xiang Zi), but their tastes differ. Si Zi has a coarse taste and produces saliva-like mucus when decocted.
(Song Dynasty *Jia You Ben Cao*)
[Names] Li Shizhen states: Named after the shape of its flower.
[Explanation] Li Shizhen states: *Celosia cristata* is found everywhere. Seedlings emerge in March; by early summer, tall plants reach five or six chi, while short ones are only a few inches high. Its leaves are green and soft, resembling white amaranth (*Amaranthus lividus*) but narrower, with red veins at the tips. The stems are red, round or flat, with raised ridges. Flowers bloom at the tips in June and July, appearing in red, white, and yellow colors. Spikes that are round, long, and pointed resemble those of *Celosia argentea*; those that are flat, curled, and broad resemble a rooster's comb. Flowers can have a circumference of one or two chi, layered and curled, which is lovely. Seeds are inside the spikes, black, fine, smooth, and identical to amaranth seeds. The spikes resemble chaffy wheat. The flowers last longest, wilting only after frost.
