(Recorded in the Middle Category of *Bie Lu*)
[Names] Que Tou Xiang (from *Tang Ben Cao*), Cao Fu Zi (from *Tu Jing Ben Cao*), Shui Xiang Leng (from *Tu Jing Ben Cao*), Shui Ba Ji (from *Tu Jing Ben Cao*), Shui Sha (from *Tu Jing Ben Cao*), Hou Sha (from *Er Ya*), Sha Jie (from *Tu Jing Ben Cao*), Fu Xu (from *Bie Lu*), Xu Gen Cao (from *Tu Jing Ben Cao*).
Li Shizhen said: *Bie Lu* only mentions "Sha Cao" without specifying whether the shoots or roots are used. Later generations have used its root, naming it "Xiang Fu Zi", unaware that this is actually Sha Cao. This grass can be made into hats and raincoats; its texture is porous yet water-repellent, hence the character includes the radical for "grass" and "sand". It is also written as "Suo" because garments made from it hang down like the mourning clothes worn by filial sons, thus adding the radical for "mourning garment". "Tai" refers to a hat, which is essential for poor laborers. Its roots grow attached and continuously, and can be blended into incense, hence the name "Xiang Fu Zi". In ancient times, it was called "Que Tou Xiang".
According to *Jiang Biao Zhuan*: Emperor Wen of Wei sent an envoy to Wu to request Que Tou Xiang, referring to this herb. Its leaves resemble those of *Samari Triandra* (Sanleng) and *Morinda officinalis* (Bajix), growing in low-lying wet areas, hence the names "Shui Sanleng" and "Shui Bajix". Common people call it "Lei Gong Tou". *Jin Guang Ming Jing* calls it "Yue Cui Duo". *Ji Shi Zhu* calls it "Bao Ling Ju Shi".
[Collection and Explanation] *Bie Lu* states: Sha Cao grows in fields; harvest in February and August.
Tao Hongjing said: It is no longer used in modern prescriptions; ancients often mentioned it in poetry, but few could identify it. There is a plant called "Shuo Suo", whose therapeutic effects differ from this one.
Su Gong said: The root of this herb is named Xiang Fu Zi, also known as Que Tou Xiang, found everywhere. The stems and leaves resemble *Samari Triandra*, and it is used in compounding incense.
Su Song said: It is now found everywhere. The shoots and leaves are slender like *Allium chinense* (Xie), and the roots are as thick as chopstick heads. According to *Tian Bao Dan Fang Tu* of Emperor Xuanzong of Tang, the efficacy of Shui Xiang Leng is similar to this. It states that Shui Xiang Leng originally grew in the ponds of Bobing Commandery; the shoot is named Xiang Leng, the root is named Sha Jie, also called Cao Fu Zi. It exists in the low wetlands of Henan and Huainan, named Shui Sha. In Longxi, it is called Di Gen. In Shu Commandery, it is named Xu Gen Cao, also called Shui Bajix. Currently, Fuzhou has the richest supply, named Sanleng Cao. The stems are used to make shoes, available everywhere. Harvesting shoots, flowers, and roots treats diseases.
Kou Zongshi said: Many people now use Xiang Fu Zi. Although it grows on the Sha Cao root, the root may or may not have bark. Some have thin, cracked, purple-black skin, not hairy. After scraping off the skin, the color becomes white. Using the root directly would be a mistake.
Li Shizhen said: Sha leaves are hard like old leek leaves, glossy with a sword-like ridge. In May and June, a single stem emerges, three-sided and hollow, with several leaves re-emerging at the tip. It bears small blue flowers forming spikes like millet, containing fine seeds. The roots have hairs; beneath the hairs form one or two tubers that propagate continuously. The tubers have fine black hairs, the larger ones resembling sheep dates but pointed at both ends. After harvesting, burn off the hairs and dry them in the sun. This is an essential daily medicine in recent times, yet Tao Hongjing did not recognize it, and various annotations overlooked it, proving that the rise and fall of medicinal substances differ between ancient and modern times. Thus, we cannot discard herbs from the Compendium simply because they are unrecognized today; who knows if they will not become essential medicines like Xiang Fu Zi in the future?
[Preparation] Lei Xiao said: Dry the harvested material in the shade, pound it in a stone mortar, strictly avoiding iron tools.
Li Shizhen said: Dry the harvested material with the shoots. Burn off the shoots and hairs with fire. When using, wash with water, scrape off the skin on a stone, soak thoroughly in urine of a young boy, wash, dry, and pound. Use raw or stir-fried, or soak in wine, vinegar, or salt water; each method follows the specific prescription, detailed below. Boiling with rice straw makes the taste less bitter.
[Flavor and Properties] Sweet, slightly cold, non-toxic. Kou Zongshi said: Bitter. Su Song said: *Tian Bao Dan Fang* states: Pungent, slightly cold, non-toxic, astringent nature.
Wang Haogu said: Sweet, bitter, slightly cold. Qi is stronger than flavor; it belongs to Yin within Yang, a Qi medicine within the Blood aspect.
Li Shizhen said: Pungent, slightly bitter, sweet, neutral. Enters the Foot Jueyin Liver and Hand Shaoyang Sanjiao meridians. It can circulate through all twelve meridians, entering the Qi level of the vessels. It works well with urine of a young boy, vinegar, *Chuanxiong Rhizoma* (Chuanxiong), and *Atractylodis Rhizoma* (Cangzhu).
[Indications] Clears heat in the chest, nourishes the skin and hair, beneficial for long-term use, tonifies Qi, promotes growth of beard and eyebrows (*Bie Lu*). Treats latent heat in the heart, Qi obstruction connecting the bladder to the hypochondrium. For chronic sorrow and unhappiness accompanied by palpitations (Su Song). Treats all Qi disorders, cholera with vomiting and diarrhea, abdominal pain, cold Qi in the Kidney and Bladder (Li Gao). Disperses epidemic cold pathogens, benefits the Triple Burner, resolves the Six Stagnations, eliminates food accumulation, phlegm-fluid retention, fullness, edema, abdominal distension, beriberi, stops pain in the heart, abdomen, limbs, head, eyes, teeth, and ears, carbuncles, sores, ulcers, hematemesis, hematochezia, hematuria, uterine bleeding and leukorrhea in women, irregular menstruation, and various diseases before and after childbirth (Li Shizhen).
Shoots and Flowers
[Indications] Deficient wind and latent heat in the Heart and Lungs of men, occasional Qi obstruction connecting the bladder to the hypochondrium, skin itching and urticaria, poor appetite, gradual emaciation, chronic sorrow, palpitations, and shortness of breath. Collect over twenty jin of shoots and flowers, chop finely, boil in 25 dou of water until reduced to 15 dou, and bathe in the decoction in a large vat. Induce sweating five or six times; the itching will cease. Regular use in all seasons permanently removes urticaria and wind pathogens (*Tian Bao Dan Fang Tu*). Decocting and drinking disperses Qi stagnation, benefits the chest and diaphragm, and descends Phlegm-Heat (Li Shizhen).
[Elucidation] Haogu said: Xiang Fu Zi treats Qi obstruction in the bladder and hypochondrium, palpitations, and shortness of breath; thus, it tonifies Qi and is a Qi medicine within the Blood aspect. Although the Materia Medica does not mention treating metrorrhagia, it is used in formulas for this purpose, indicating its ability to tonify Qi and stop bleeding. It also expels blood stasis, representing pushing out the old. This is analogous to *Crotonis Fructus* (Badou) treating constipation while also stopping diarrhea. Furthermore, Xiang Fu Zi is Yin within Yang, a Qi medicine within Blood; it must be used for Qi stagnation and Blood-Qi disorders. Charred, it stops bleeding and treats metrorrhagia; it is the immortal medicine for women. Excessive consumption may deplete Qi.
Zhenheng said: Xiang Fu Zi must be soaked in urine of a young boy to resolve all stagnations. It is a necessary medicine for Blood-Qi disorders, guiding substances to the Qi level to generate Blood, embodying the principle of Yin generating Yang. Although the Materia Medica does not mention tonification, physicians note its benefit for the elderly, implying tonification within movement. Heaven is Heaven because it is vigorous and constant. Vigorous operation without ceasing generates life endlessly; this is the same principle. It is even used in incense now.
Li Shizhen said: The Qi of Xiang Fu Zi is neutral and not cold; its fragrance allows it to penetrate. Its pungent flavor disperses, slight bitterness descends, and slight sweetness harmonizes. It is the chief medicine for the Qi level of the Foot Jueyin Liver and Hand Shaoyang Sanjiao, simultaneously communicating with the Qi level of all twelve meridians. Raw, it ascends to the chest and diaphragm and reaches the skin; cooked, it descends to the Liver and Kidneys and penetrates the waist and feet. Charred, it stops bleeding. Soaked in child's urine and stir-fried, it enters the Blood level to tonify deficiency. Soaked in salt water and stir-fried, it enters the Blood level to moisten dryness. Stir-fried with green salt, it tonifies Kidney Qi. Soaked in wine and stir-fried, it moves collaterals. Soaked in vinegar and stir-fried, it eliminates accumulations. Stir-fried with ginger juice, it transforms Phlegm-Fluid. With Ginseng and Atractylodes, it tonifies Qi; with Angelica and Rehmannia, it tonifies Blood; with Aucklandia, it regulates stagnation and harmonizes the middle; with Sandalwood, it regulates Qi and awakens the Spleen; with Agarwood, it ascends and descends all Qi; with Chuanxiong and Cangzhu, it resolves all stagnations; with Gardenia and Coptis, it clears fire and heat; with Poria, it harmonizes Heart and Kidney; with Fennel and Psoralea, it guides Qi back to the origin; with Magnolia Bark and Pinellia, it resolves obstruction and reduces distension; with Perilla and Scallion, it disperses pathogenic factors; with Curcuma and Edgeworthia, it dissipates masses; with Mugwort, it treats Blood-Qi disorders and warms the uterus. It is the general manager of Qi disorders and the commander of Gynecology. Han Zhihe of Feixia said: Xiang Fu Zi pushes out the old and generates the new, hence texts say it tonifies Qi. The folk notion that it depletes Qi and is suitable for women but not men is incorrect. Women rely on Blood; when Qi moves, there is no disease. The elderly have depleted Essence and closed Blood, relying solely on Qi. Children’s Qi fills daily, solidifying their form. Generally, illness causes Qi stagnation and weakness, so Xiang Fu Zi serves as the Sovereign drug for Qi disorders, a fact rarely known by the world. Using Ginseng and Astragalus as Ministers, Licorice as Assistants, treats deficiency rapidly. Traveling as a wandering physician, carrying a simple gourd, I treated hundreds of diseases with Huang He Dan and Qing Nang Wan for women, using appropriate guides as needed, always achieving minor effects. Those seeking more should ponder the meaning beyond the formula. Huang He Dan was transmitted by Zhu Yi Weng at Yellow Crane Tower, hence the name. The formula uses one jin of Xiang Fu Zi and half a jin of Coptis, washed, dried, powdered, and pillized with water paste to the size of wu zi pills. For external contraction, take with scallion and ginger soup; for internal injury, with rice drink; for Qi disorders, with Aucklandia soup; for Blood disorders, with wine; for Phlegm disorders, with ginger soup; for Fire disorders, with plain water. Others can be inferred similarly. Qing Nang Wan was received by Zhenren Shao Yingjie while praying for his mother’s illness, taught by a Daoist practitioner. The formula uses one jin of Xiang Fu Zi (lightly stir-fried) and five liang three qian of Lindera Root (lightly roasted), powdered, and pillized with flour paste boiled in water and vinegar. Use appropriate guides according to symptoms: for headache, take with tea; for Phlegm-Qi, with ginger soup; taking with wine is excellent.
[Attached Formulas] One old, forty-eight new.
Administration Method: Su Song said: *Tian Bao Dan Fang Tu* states: The root of Shui Xiang Leng is named Sha Jie, also called Cao Fu Zi, as mentioned above. Take two large sheng of the root, pound and roast until fragrant, place in a raw silk bag, and steep in three dou of clear wine without ash. After the spring months, steep for one day before use; after winter months, steep for seven days, preferably near warmth. Drink one cup warm on an empty stomach, three to four times a day, maintaining a continuous sensation of wine, stopping when feeling effective. If not drinking wine, take ten liang of root, add five liang of Cassia Twig, and three liang of Myristica Seed. Pound together into powder, mix with honey to form pills, pounding one thousand times.
Jiao Gan Dan: For middle-aged individuals with depleted Essence and spirit. This is due to insufficient Heart Blood, causing Fire not to descend; exhausted Kidney Qi, causing Water not to ascend. This leads to separation of Heart and Kidney, disharmony of Ying and Wei. Upper: frequent fright; Middle: obstruction and fullness, inability to eat; Lower: deficiency-cold and seminal emission. Ignorant doctors only know to strongly tonify the lower field, which not only fails to generate Water and nourish Yin but worsens decline. Taking this formula for half a year, avoiding all warming drugs, abstaining from desires, and practicing retention techniques yields indescribable effects. Yu Tongfeng was fifty-one when Mr. Shen from Tie Weng City taught him this. Taking it, he remained youthful in old age, living to eighty-five. He shared it with all beings to attain longevity. Xiang Fu Zi one jin (soaked overnight in fresh water, rubbed clean of hairs on stone, stir-fried yellow), Poria four liang (skin and wood removed), powdered, pillized with refined honey to the size of弹子. Heart-Spleen Pain: Bai Feixia’s *Fangwai Qifang* states: A point of pain in the soft part of the chest is mostly caused by Qi and Cold, potentially lifelong or hereditary. Folk name "Heart Qi Pain" is incorrect; it is actually stagnation in the epigastrium. Only this Dubu San treats it excellently. Xiang Fu Zi (soaked in rice vinegar, lightly stir-fried to powder), Galangal Root (washed seven times in wine, lightly stir-fried to powder). Store separately. For Cold: Galangal two qian, Xiang Fu Zi one qian; for Qi: Xiang Fu Zi two qian, Galangal one qian; for both Qi and Cold: equal parts, mixed evenly. Mix with hot rice water, one spoon of ginger juice, and a pinch of salt; take to stop pain immediately. Seven or eight doses cure the root. Wang’s *Baiyi Fang* states: Lady Wu Kai, wife of Neihan, suffered fatal heart pain; taking this cured her. *Leibian* states: Liang Hun suffered heart-spleen pain for years without cure; serving the Huiji Buddha, he dreamed of receiving this formula, cured after one dose, hence named Shenshou Yibi San.
