Heart
[Flavor and Nature]: Sweet, salty, neutral, non-toxic.
Song said: Excessive consumption depletes Heart Qi. Do not consume with Evodia rutaecarpa (Wuzhuyu).
[Indications]: Treats fright-evil, sorrow, and resentment (from "Bencao Jing Ji Zhu"). Treats deficiency palpitations, rebellious Qi, postpartum wind-stroke in women, and blood-Qi fright (Sun Simiao). Nourishes insufficient blood, treats deficiency and weakness (Su Song).
[Elucidation]: Liu Wansu said: Pigs are water animals; therefore, the heart can calm mental confusion and trance.

Eating it with fish causes carbuncles and sores; eating it with carp intestines or roe damages the spirit; eating it with quail causes facial deformities. "Yanshou Shu" says: When pigs are about to be slaughtered, the shock Qi enters the heart, and the dying Qi returns to the liver; both should not be eaten in excess, as they will harm humans.
[Indications]: Treats pediatric convulsions and epilepsy (Su Gong). Slice raw, eat with ginger and vinegar; treats foot [disease] (Zang Qun). [Attached Prescriptions]: Seven old, seven new.

Su Song said: Do not eat in winter; it damages true Qi and induces deficiency stagnation.
[Indications]: Regulates Kidney Qi, unblocks Bladder (from "Bencao Jing Ji Zhu"). Tonifies Bladder Water Organ, warms waist and knees, treats deafness (from "Rihua"). Tonifies deficiency, strengthens Qi, resolves stagnation (Su Song). Removes cold diarrhea (Sun Simiao). Stops polydipsia, treats postpartum consumption with sweating, dysentery, and metrorrhagia (Li Shizhen).
[Elucidation]: Li Shizhen said: "Bencao Jing Ji Zhu" states that Pig Kidney regulates Kidney Qi and unblocks Bladder. "Rihua" also says it tonifies Bladder Water Organ and warms waist and knees; yet it also says although it tonifies Kidney, long-term consumption reduces fertility. Meng Shen also said long-term consumption causes Kidney deficiency. How to reconcile these contradictions? Pig Kidney is cold in nature and cannot tonify Mingmen Essence and Qi. In prescriptions, it is used only as a guide. The characters "regulate" and "unblock" in "Bencao Jing Ji Zhu" are most reasonable; the claims in "Rihua" about warming waist/knees and tonifying Bladder are incorrect. Those with Kidney deficiency-heat should eat it; those with Kidney Qi deficiency-cold should not. Modern people do not understand this and often eat Pig Kidney as a tonic; this must be examined carefully. Also, "Qianjin" has Zhu Shen Ji Tang for polydipsia, and Shen Li Tang for various Kidney deficiency consumptions; there are many formulas, all using Pig or Sheep Kidney boiled in water to decoct herbs.
[Attached Prescriptions]: Four old, nineteen new.
