[Names] Gui Niao (Ghost Bird) (from *Bencao Shiyi*), Jiu Tou Niao (Nine-Headed Bird) (ibid.), Cang Hu (Grey Falcon) (from *Baize Tu* [Illustrated Record of Baize]), Qi Zhu (Strange Bird) (ibid.). Li Shizhen said: The "Gui Che" (Ghost Carriage/Bird) is a demonic bird, deriving its name from the meaning of "carrying ghosts in one carriage" recorded in the *I Ching* (Book of Changes). Its appearance resembles...
[Explanation and Collection] Zang Qi said: The "Gui Che" flies and cries out in darkness, can enter people's houses, and collect human soul qi. It is passed down that this bird once had ten heads; a dog bit off one, leaving nine remaining. One head constantly drips blood; if the blood falls on a house, it brings misfortune. People in the Jingchu region, upon hearing it fly and cry at night, would extinguish lamps, beat doors, and twist dogs' ears to suppress it, saying it fears dogs. *Baize Tu* records that the Cang Hu has nine heads, and that Confucius and Zi Xia saw a Qi Zhu with nine heads; all are this creature. *Jingchu Suishi Ji* records...
Li Shizhen said: The "Gui Che" resembles an owl but is larger, with wings spanning about one zhang when spread. It is blind during the day and sees clearly at night; seeing firelight causes it to fall. According to Liu Xun's *Lingbiao Lu Yi*: The "Gui Che" originates from the Qinzhong region, and is particularly abundant in Lingnan. During the transition between spring and summer, if there is slight overcast or gloom, it flies and cries while passing by, its sound resembling the ringing of a knife cart. It loves entering houses and dissipating human soul qi. Houses where blood drips will surely suffer disaster. *Bianmin Tuzuan* says: In winter, the "Gui Che" flies at night; its crying sound moving from north to south is called "leaving the nest," presaging rain; from south to north, it is called "returning to the nest," presaging clear weather. Zhou Mi's *Qidong Yeyu* says: In the Song Dynasty, Li Shouwen, governor of Changsha, once captured this bird. It resembled a wild duck, was red in color, and its body was round like a winnowing basket. Ten necks clustered together, having nine heads, one of which was missing yet dripped bright red blood. Each neck had two wings, flying forward together with a whirring sound. Additionally, when Princess Zhouhan was ill, this bird flew to the chopping block and died immediately. Alas! Gathered by strange qi, so demonic and bizarre, this must be known.
(From *Bencao Shiyi*)
Any bird that dies naturally does not close its eyes; any bird that dies naturally does not extend its feet. White birds with black heads, black birds with white heads, those with three feet, four spurs, six toes, four wings, and those with abnormal shapes and colors, should all not be eaten. Eating them kills people.
