(Song Dynasty *Tujing Bencao*)
[Ji Jie (Collected Explanations)] Su Song stated: It grows in the mountains and forests of Yizhou. It attaches to rocks and grows as a vine, with leaves resembling those of soybeans. Its root resembles a radish; large ones are as thick as a three-sheng vessel, while small ones are like a fist. The roots are harvested in February and August, sliced, and dried in the shade for use.
[Qi Wei (Flavor and Nature)] Bitter, cold, non-toxic.
[Zhu Zhi (Main Indications)] Treats wind-heat congestion causing sore throat and swelling, and resolves poison from barbarian arrows. When pounded into powder and taken with wine, it is effective. It also dissipates redness and swelling caused by wind-heat toxicity. Rubbed with wine and applied topically, it heals immediately (Su Song).
(Tang Dynasty *Bencao Shiyi*)
[Shi Ming (Name Explanation)] Cheng Lu Xian.
[Ji Jie (Collected Explanations)] Chen Cangqi stated: It grows on Tiantai Mountain in Sizhou. It spreads as a vine, with round, thin leaves resembling coins. Roots shaped like birds are considered superior.
[Qi Wei (Flavor and Nature)] Bitter, cold, non-toxic.
[Zhu Zhi (Main Indications)] Resolves poisoning from various medicines, treats heat-induced restlessness and oppression, acute jaundice, epidemic jaundice, malaria and miasma evil qi, chills and fever with headache, and carbuncles. Effective against epidemics in horses and cattle. Ground with water and taken orally; fresh material is especially good. It can also be applied externally to abscesses, with effects similar to Chen Family White Medicine (Chen Cangqi).
[Appendix] Yang Pen (from *Bencao Shiyi*) Chen Cangqi stated: Pungent, warm, slightly toxic. A small amount taken after grinding with water treats gu poison, feishi (flying corpse) sore throat. It can also be ground and applied to malignant skin swellings. Grows in valleys of Dongyang. The herb resembles Cheng Lu Xian, but the root is round like an inverted basin, about the size of a chicken egg.
Chen Cangqi stated: It primarily resolves poison from various medicines and wandering wind, treating softness and numbness in hands and feet. All parts are crushed raw for internal or external application. Grows among rocks in Lingnan. It climbs via vines, has trifoliate leaves, and purple flowers. Although sharing the name Cheng Lu Xian with Fu Ji Zi, the leaves of Fu Ji Zi are round.
Li Shizhen stated: Using three liang of the root, grind to extract juice or decoct into a concentrated liquid for oral administration. Both methods resolve gu poison.
(Song Dynasty *Kaibao Bencao*)
[Jiao Zheng (Correction)] Transferred from the Wood section to this section.
[Ji Jie (Collected Explanations)] Chen Cangqi stated: There are several types of Qianjin Teng, with different names in the north and south, but their general therapeutic effects are similar; perhaps they are all close to vine plants. Those growing in northern regions have roots as thick as fingers and color like lacquer; those in southern soils are yellow-red like Xixin (Asarum). In Shu and Luzhou, there is a vine that wraps around trees, remains evergreen in winter, and is also called Qianjin Teng. In Jiangxi forests, there is a grass-like plant with swollen nodes at the leaf tips resembling crane knees, with willow-like leaves, also called Qianjin Teng. Another type resembles lotus leaves but is only coin-sized, also called Qianjin Teng, or Gu Teng, mainly treating dysentery and abdominal distension in children. "Qianjin" implies preciousness. Are they all the same substance? Or do they share a name despite different shapes? If weighed accurately, it is unknown which is correct. Additionally, in Lingnan, Chensi Ji is also called Qianjin Teng.
[Qi Wei (Flavor and Nature)] Missing.
[Zhu Zhi (Main Indications)] Treats all blood toxins and various qi disorders, cholera with evil qi invasion, epidemic consumption and malaria/miasma, phlegm-cough with obstruction, large abscesses and severe toxins, drug toxicity eruptions, epilepsy, and all such conditions (Chen Cangqi).
[Appendix] Chensi Ji (from *Bencao Shiyi*)
Chen Cangqi stated: Found in the wilds of Lingnan. It grows as a vine like small beans, with pungent and fragrant roots and leaves. Also known as Shi Huang Xiang and Qianjin Teng. Its root is pungent, neutral, and non-toxic. It resolves various medicinal and heat toxins, erysipelas, abscesses, epidemic high fever, sore throat, and gu poison; all are treated by decocting and drinking the juice. It can also be ground and applied to sores and swellings. [Anonymous] stated: Bitter, neutral. Taken as wine infusion, it treats wind pathogens and tonifies the body, making one feel light.
