[Compendium of Materia Medica]
[Ji Jie (Collected Explanations)] Li Shizhen stated: Huangyang (Buxus sinica) grows in mountains and wilds everywhere, and is often cultivated by households. Its branches and leaves cluster and grow upwards; the leaves are dark green, resembling the buds of young locust trees. It does not flower or bear fruit, yet remains evergreen throughout the four seasons. Its growth is slow; folk sayings claim it grows only one cun per year and shrinks back during leap years. Current trials confirm that it simply does not grow in leap years. The wood is hard and fine-grained, making it excellent for carving combs and seals. According to Duan Chengshi's *Youyang Zazu*: People value Huangyang because it is "fireless." When tested with water, pieces that sink are considered fireless. Whenever harvesting this wood, one must choose overcast, gloomy days with no stars visible at night; otherwise, the wood will crack.
Leaves
[Qi Wei (Flavor and Nature)] Bitter, neutral, non-toxic.
[Zhu Zhi (Main Actions)] Treats difficult labor in women; used within Dasheng San (Da Sheng Powder). Also treats boils arising in summer months; apply externally after pounding into a paste (Li Shizhen).
[Supplement to Materia Medica]
[Ji Jie (Collected Explanations)] Chen Cangqi stated: Grows in rocky valleys of Mount Taibai. The tree is two to three chi tall; leaves resemble those of locust trees, stems are red and hairy like pear trees, remaining evergreen.
[Qi Wei (Flavor and Nature)] Bitter, warm, non-toxic.
[Zhu Zhi (Main Actions)] Harmonizes the middle jiao and tonifies deficiency; treats waist and leg ailments; expels wind-pathogens; retards aging and prevents whitening of hair (Chen Cangqi).
[Tang Ben Cao (Tang Pharmacopoeia)]
[Shi Ming (Names)] Maizi Mu (Buyzi Wood).
[Ji Jie (Collected Explanations)] Su Gong stated: Maizi Mu originates from the valleys of Lingnan and Qiongzhou. Its leaves resemble those of persimmon trees.
Su Song stated: Currently, only Western Sichuan and Quzhou annually tribute this plant, known as Maizi Mu. The tree is five to seven chi high, with a diameter of about one cun. In spring, tender branches emerge with pointed leaves, one to two cun long, all dark green, while branch tips are pale purple. In April and May, small flowers bloom, clustering in large heads composed of dozens of branches, appearing scorched red. Fruits resembling peppercorns form alongside the flowers, black and glossy within the petals, typically arranged in clusters of three to five per plant. Leaves and branches are harvested in the fifth month.
Li Shizhen stated: The *History of Song* records that Quzhou tributed both Maizi Mu and its fruits; thus, the fruits should possess similar efficacy to the leaves and branches. However, earlier pharmacopoeias lack this record, making verification impossible.
Wood
[Xiu Zhi (Processing)] Lei Xiao stated: After coarse pounding, mix each liang of the herb with 5 qian of animal fat (su), stir-fry until dry, then use for decoction.
[Qi Wei (Flavor and Nature)] Sweet, slightly salty, neutral, non-toxic.
[Zhu Zhi (Main Actions)] Treats internal bleeding from traumatic injuries; reconnects severed bones and tonifies marrow; alleviates pain and calms the fetus (*Tang Ben Cao*).
