[Dark Plum Fruit / Wu Mei]
Qi is neutral. Flavor is sour. Non-toxic. Primarily descends Qi, eliminates heat, relieves fullness and vexation, calms the mind, stops limb pain, treats hemiplegia, numbness, and necrotic muscle tissue, removes dark moles, and cauterizes malignant flesh.
Wu Mei has neutral Qi, inheriting the metal energy of autumn's gathering from Heaven, entering the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian. Its sour flavor and non-toxic nature derive from the wood flavor of the East from Earth, entering the Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian.
Both Qi and flavor are descending, belonging to Yin. The Lung governs Qi; when Qi is neutral, it descends, thus Wu Mei descends Qi. The Liver belongs to Wood; Wood fears Fire flaring up and reversing into the chest, causing heat, vexation, and fullness. Wu Mei’s sour flavor can gather floating heat and draw inspiration downward, thereby relieving vexation and fullness. The Heart belongs to Fire, which is the son of Wood (in Five Element generation). Sour flavor and neutral Qi can pacify Liver Wood; when Liver Wood is harmonious, the Heart becomes tranquil. Limbs belong to the Spleen; the Spleen belongs to Earth. When Liver Wood overacts on Spleen Earth, pain occurs. The sour flavor has astringent properties, thus stopping pain. The Liver stores Blood; when Blood is depleted, hemiplegia, numbness, and necrotic muscle result. Sour flavor nourishes Liver Blood; when Blood is harmonious, it moistens, curing numbness and necrosis. Removing dark moles and cauterizing malignant flesh relies on the astringent nature of sour flavor; externally applied, it dissolves moles and fleshy growths.
Preparation Methods:
Decoct Wu Mei to treat headache caused by Fire flaring. Combined with Fermented Soybean (Douchi), Licorice Root (Gancao), Fresh Ginger (Shengjiang), and Child’s Urine (Tongbian) to treat chronic malaria (Lao Nue). Combined with Chuanlian Wan to treat bloody dysentery (Chili). Burned specifically to ash and applied topically to treat malignant flesh.
[Loquat Leaf / Pipa Ye]
Qi is neutral. Flavor is bitter. Non-toxic. Primarily treats sudden persistent hiccups. Descends Qi. (Roast over fire and brush off hairs.)
Pipa Ye has neutral Qi, inheriting the metal energy of autumn's gathering from Heaven, entering the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian. Its bitter flavor and non-toxic nature derive from the fire flavor of the South from Earth, entering the Hand-Shaoyin Heart Meridian.
Both Qi and flavor are descending, belonging to Yin. Acute diseases often belong to Fire; Fire flares upward and reverses, causing persistent hiccups. "Yue" refers to hiccups. Bitter flavor clears Heart Fire, thus treating this condition. The Lung governs Qi; when Qi is hot, it reverses upward. Pipa Ye’s neutral Qi descends Lung Qi, thus achieving the effect of descending Qi.
Preparation Methods:
Combine Pipa Ye with Ophiopogon Tuber (Maidong), Schisandra Berry (Wuweizi), White Peony Root (Baishao), and Licorice Root (Gancao) to treat sudden persistent hiccups. Combine with Perilla Stem (Sugeng), Peucedanum Root (Qianhu), Moutan Bark (Danpi), Trichosanthes Root (Huafen), Schisandra Berry (Wuweizi), and Quince (Mu Gua) to treat rebellious Qi failing to descend.
