[Longan Aril]
The qi is neutral. The taste is sweet. It is non-toxic. It primarily treats pathogenic factors in the five zang organs, calms the spirit (Shen), and relieves anorexia. It eliminates gu poison and removes the "three worms" (parasites). Long-term consumption strengthens the hun (ethereal soul) and enhances hearing and vision. It lightens the body, delays aging, and promotes spiritual clarity.
Longan aril has neutral qi, inheriting the metallic qi of autumn's equilibrium, entering the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian. Its sweet and non-toxic taste corresponds to the central earth flavor of the earth, entering the Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian.
Its aroma and taste descend but contain ascending properties; it belongs to Yin. The Spleen is the root of the five zang organs. Where pathogenic factors gather, the healthy qi must be deficient. Longan aril’s sweet taste benefits the Spleen qi; when the Spleen functions vigorously, the five zang organs are replenished, and pathogenic factors cannot reside. The Kidney stores the Zhi (willpower); the Kidney is a water organ. Longan aril’s neutral qi benefits the Lung metal; Lung metal generates Kidney water; when kidney water is nourished, the will is calm. Its sweet taste benefits the Spleen; when the Spleen is tonified, appetite naturally advances. Sweetness can detoxify, thus eliminating gu poison. The three worms are transformed from damp-heat. Neutral qi benefits the Lung; the Lung is the organ of clear descent. When Lung qi is sufficient, its clearing and descending command prevails, water passages flow freely, damp-heat is driven downward, and the worms are expelled. Long-term consumption: neutral qi benefits the Lung, sweet taste benefits the Spleen. The Spleen governs blood of the whole body; the Lung governs qi of the whole body. Abundant qi generates essence, making yin qi particularly strong, nourishing the Heart, Liver, and Kidney. The Liver stores Hun; when the Liver is nourished by blood, the hun becomes strong and eyes become bright. When the Kidney is nourished by abundant water, the body feels light and ears become sensitive. When the Heart is nourished by moist blood, blood luster shines on the face, hence delaying aging. Spiritual clarity allows for divine penetration.
Prescription:
Longan aril combined with Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix), Tian Dong (Asparagi Radix), Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Radix), Dan Shen (Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Bai Ren (Ziziphi Spinosomi Semen), Yuan Zhi (Polygalae Radix), Lian Zi (Nelumbinis Semen), Wu Wei Zi (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus), Fu Shen (Poria cum Risus), and Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix). Used to tonify the Heart and calm the spirit.
[Hawthorn Fruit]
The qi is cold. The taste is sour. It is non-toxic. Taken as a decoction, it stops dysentery. Washing hair and body treats skin sores and itching.
Hawthorn fruit has cold qi, inheriting the metallic qi of autumn’s coolness, entering the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian. Its sour and non-toxic taste corresponds to the wooden flavor of the east, entering the Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian.
Both aroma and taste descend; it belongs to Yin. Food enters the Stomach, and its refined essence is dispersed to the Liver. If the Liver fails to disperse essence, stagnation occurs leading to dysentery. Hawthorn’s sour taste benefits the Liver; when the Liver disperses essence, stagnation moves downward. Cold qi benefits the Lung; when Lung qi is unobstructed and regulated, water and grain separate, and dysentery stops. Washing hair works because Hawthorn resolves stagnation and removes dirt. Skin and hair are the exterior correspondence of the Lung. Sores and itching are caused by Lung heat. Cold qi clears Lung heat, hence used for washing.
Prescription:
Hawthorn combined with Fan Hong (Alumen Rubrum), Chuan Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma - *Note: Context implies specific preparation or local name, likely referring to Coptis or similar bitter/cold herb for heat/damp*), and Hong Qu (Monascus Rice). Used to resolve meat accumulation. Combined with Hong Qu, Mai Ya (Hordei Fructus Germinatus), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Rou Dou Kou (Myristicae Semen), Hou Po (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex), and Sha Ren (Amomi Fructus). Used to resolve food accumulation. Combined with Xiao Hui Wan (Minim Fennel Pill). Used to treat hernia.
