[Cinnamon Twig]
The thermal nature is warm. The flavor is pungent. It is non-toxic. It primarily treats rebellious Qi, coughing, and wheezing; qi stagnation in the throat causing throat obstruction (bi) with abnormal respiration (exhaling but not inhaling); it benefits the joints, tonifies the Middle Jiao, and supplements Qi. Long-term administration connects to the spirit. It lightens the body and prevents aging.
Cinnamon Twig (Guizhi) has a warm thermal nature, inheriting the harmonious Wood Qi of spring from Heaven, entering the Foot Jueyin Liver Meridian. Its flavor is pungent and non-toxic, obtaining the moistening Metal flavor of the West from Earth, entering the Hand Taiyin Lung Meridian. Both its aroma and flavor ascend; it is Yang. The Lung is the organ of Metal. Cold damaging the form or cold drinks injuring the Lung causes the Lung to be damaged, resulting in Qi failing to descend, leading to rebellious Qi and coughing. Cinnamon Twig’s warm nature warms the Lung; when the Lung is warm, Qi descends, and coughing ceases. "Qi stagnation, throat obstruction, exhaling but not inhaling" refers to obstruction (bi), meaning blockage. Qi knots in the throat, blocking passage, allowing only exhalation without inhalation. Cinnamon Twig’s pungency and warmth disperse knots and move Qi; thus, knots scatter, blockages clear, and normal inhalation resumes. Pungency can moisten, harmonizing sinews and vessels, thereby benefiting the joints. The "Middle" refers to the Spleen. Pungency and warmth unblock Liver Qi, benefiting the Spleen Meridian, hence tonifying the Middle. Supplementing Qi occurs because the Lung governs Qi; when the Lung is warm, True Qi flows freely and benefits. Long-term use connecting to the spirit, lightening the body, and preventing aging happens because long-term use warms the Heart to assist Yang; constant extension of Yang brings spiritual clarity. Abundant Yang leads to a light body and prevention of aging.
Formulation:
Cinnamon Twig combined with White Peony Root (Baishao), Licorice Root (Gancao), Fresh Ginger (Shengjiang), and Jujube (Dazao) is named Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction). It treats Wind Strike (Zhongfeng). Combined with White Peony Root, Licorice Root, Maltose (Yitang), Fresh Ginger, Jujube, and Astragalus Root (Huangqi), it is named Huangqi Jianzhong Tang (Astragalus Decoction for Establishing the Middle). It treats Yin-Blood deficiency.
[Evodia Fruit]
The thermal nature is warm. The flavor is pungent. It has slight toxicity. It primarily warms the Middle, directs Qi downward, stops pain, dispels Dampness and Blood Bi, drives out Wind pathogenic factors, opens the Cou Li (pores/skin texture), and treats coughing, wheezing, chills, and fever. (Use after soaking and roasting.)
Evodia Fruit (Wuyu) has a warm thermal nature, inheriting the harmonious Wood Qi of spring from Heaven, entering the Foot Jueyin Liver Meridian. Its flavor is pungent with slight toxicity, obtaining the dry and fierce Metal flavor of the West from Earth, entering the Hand Taiyin Lung Meridian. Both its aroma and flavor ascend; it is Yang. The Middle refers to the Spleen, which belongs to the Taiyin Meridian. The Lung governs Qi and also belongs to Taiyin. Warm thermal nature causes Lung Qi to descend, warming the Taiyin Meridian, thus warming the Middle and directing Qi downward. When Cold pathogenic factors lodge in the chest and abdomen, True Qi becomes blocked, causing pain. Pungency and warmth promote circulation and dispersion, thus stopping pain. Pungency and warmth warm the Lung; as Lung Qi circulates, water passages regulate, thereby dispelling Dampness. Stagnant Blood forms Bi; the Liver stores Blood, and warm Blood moves actively, thus treating Blood Bi. Pungency and warmth are Yang, possessing dispersing properties, thus driving out Wind pathogenic factors. The Lung governs skin/hair and controls Cou Li; pungency and warmth disperse, naturally opening the Cou Li. Cold damaging the form and cold drinks injuring the Lung causes Qi to fail to descend, while Fire rebels upward, generating symptoms of coughing, wheezing, chills, and fever. Evodia Fruit’s pungency and warmth warm the Lung; as Lung Qi descends, symptoms of chills, fever, coughing, and wheezing naturally subside.
Formulation:
Evodia Fruit combined with Ginseng Root (Renshen), Fresh Ginger, and Jujube is named Wuyu Tang (Evodia Decoction). It treats vomiting of saliva/phlegm and headache. Combined with Tangerine Peel (Chenpi) and Aconite Root (Fuzi), it treats hiccups caused by rebellious Kidney Qi. Combined with Coptis Rhizome (Chuanlian) and White Peony Root as pills, it treats dysentery. Taken with one qian of decocted Prepared Ginger (Paojiang) powder, it treats acid regurgitation immediately after eating. Combined with Cinnamon Bark (Rougui) and Prepared Ginger as pills, named Hezhong Wan (Harmonize the Middle Pill), it treats abdominal distension due to Cold.
